The author concludes that for religious and political reasons the Fatimids designed their new capital on the basis of a geometric figure, a pentagram, oriented due east. The plan is consistent with the Fatimids’ rigorous organizational skills, but the pentagram was also a powerful symbol in service to Isma’ili propaganda.","PeriodicalId":42904,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES","volume":"7 1","pages":"115 - 132"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13574809608724388","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60189079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Turks were the enemy in two senses, both as military conquerors and, as Muslims, a dangerous threat to the Orthodox Church. The Turkish image greatly contributed to the shaping of Bulgarian identity. However, although largely negative, the Bulgarian image of the Turk was not always so.","PeriodicalId":42904,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES","volume":"5 1","pages":"173 - 187"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69512586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The festive behaviour appears to contradict the sober, rational conduct associated with modernization and industrialization. \"Revitalizing European Rituals\" examines why the revitalization is taking place. The contributors examine fairs, carnivals, fiestas, Holy Weel and national rituals in Britain, Poland, Spain, Italy, Malta and Greece. They have lived and worked in the communities they describe, celbrated the festivities they analyze, and have discussed them with the celebrants. The underlying reasons for the revival are complex. The conclusions provide insights into the changes sweeping across contemporary Europe. This book should be of interest to undergraduates, postgraduates and academics in the fields of social anthropology, sociology, theology and tourism.","PeriodicalId":42904,"journal":{"name":"JOURNAL OF MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES","volume":"6 1","pages":"182 - 187"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2307/2804025","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68646323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
