We argue that Filipino Bilingual education is a counternarrative technology to white settler narratives in the diaspora. We unpack an understanding of technology that is defined as an embodied skill within the racialized processes that have advanced Eurocentrism in western pedagogy. Through heritage language learning, we argue that the continued use and teaching of the Filipino language in Canada interrogates the hegemonic myth that Canada is founded exclusively by two European nations, the English and the French. As such, we think alongside Canadian scholar Marshall McLuhan and his “medium is the message” to argue that heritage language instruction is a technology or skill that forms an “extension of man” who is also plurilingual and racialized. In Winnipeg, where Filipinos comprise the largest immigrant community in the city, the extension of the Filipino language as an official medium of instruction represents opportunities for intergenerational learning, cultural portals, and healing of the colonized psyche.","PeriodicalId":428625,"journal":{"name":"Re:Locations - Journal of the Asia-Pacific World","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"138979203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The violence associated with the “Rohingya-Refugee Crisis,” is now referred to as one of the worst humanitarian crises in the history of humankind.  Refugees were dependent on humanitarian assistance provided by different organizations for their basic livelihood. This study intended to dig deeper into the history of the Rohingya people and the complex factors that are behind their refugee status. It is evident that the history of the Rohingya community  itself is complicated. Previously, they have supported and were supported by different nations. This study presents the socio-political history of eastern-western interventions in Arakan, isolation practices, global norms, and anti-norms that create the present situation, as well as identifies  the efforts of international and host communities to protect Rohingya rights. ","PeriodicalId":428625,"journal":{"name":"Re:Locations - Journal of the Asia-Pacific World","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130301313","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They destabilize and challenge the legacy of European landscapes and encounters, offering a distinctly critical and indigenous rearticulation of the genre. Paintings by contemporary artist John Walsh feature lush and ethereal scenes, often populated by figures both human and mythical. Half Māori (Aitanga a Hauiti) and half Pākehā (of white settler descent), Walsh’s eerie paintings are suffused with a devotion to and kinship with the natural world of Aotearoa New Zealand and its indigenous peoples. His paintings lay bare the complicated and partial qualities of landscapes as an artistic genre, providing a counterpoint to centuries of European colonial tableaux. ","PeriodicalId":428625,"journal":{"name":"Re:Locations - Journal of the Asia-Pacific World","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115912813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ethnographic focus of this essay identifies factors that contribute to slum’s persistent existence, namely migration and social stigma.  The projected images and their symbolic representations, such as of Mumbai as a global and modern city, and slums as the lowest layer of the society, are embedded in Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), while at the same time are the very reasons that hinder redevelopment plans and reinforce migration and social stigma.The latter is embedded in the term ‘slum’ itself, and plays a crucial role in the inability to market Dharavi effectively to potential investors. Using theoretical frameworks I will connect those issues to the discourse of modernity, globalization and urbanization, while retaining the focus on the specificities that are particular to Mumbai and India.","PeriodicalId":428625,"journal":{"name":"Re:Locations - Journal of the Asia-Pacific World","volume":"23 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114105631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For decades, the events appeared indigenous to Indonesia. However, in recent years declassified materials have indicated that other countries, namely the United States, were involved in the mass killings of hundreds of thousands of people. The United States encouraged the military’s actions prior to and during 1965, used propaganda to further antognize the targets of the killings, and provided supplies during the events. Given this information, the United States was in fact complicit in the purge of the late 1960s; American officials did not pull the trigger but loaded the gun. These conclusions raise further questions regarding the idea of complicity and how one can determine such an intangible concept. The consequences of these inquiries offer the chance to correct the historical record and identify the extent of American invovlement in Southeast Asian affairs during the Cold War.  ","PeriodicalId":428625,"journal":{"name":"Re:Locations - Journal of the Asia-Pacific World","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132386306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
