The present study was focused on stream stability assessment of the Torsa River. The study area is situated between the downstream of the Jaldapara Reserve Forest and confluence of Kaljani River. Data of different parameters about 64 bank segments of the Torsa River were prepared using the field work techniques for assessing the stream bank conditions using lateral, vertical and overall reach stability models. The individual results of BEHI and NBS ratings show that out of 64 bank segments only 35 and 19 bank segments classified in higher categories. Overall lateral stability analysis shows that most of the sample bank segments are in an unstable condition. All bank segments are vertically unstable and degrading. Overall reach stability analysis shows widespread instability. BEHI and NBS results are almost similar for most of the bank segments and therefore, BEHI and NBS can be suitable bank erosion hazard predictive models in the study for channel stability analysis.","PeriodicalId":428604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Geographical Studies","volume":"194 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115648471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study attempts to establish relationship among vegetation changes and land surface temperature using the data derived from satellite products in the Middle Ganga Plain, India using python programming. Ten years of MODIS Land Surface Temperature (LST) on board Terra, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index/Enhanced Vegetation Index (NDVI/EVI) (1km spatial and 8-days composite temporal resolution for LST and 250m spatial and 16-days composite for NDVI/EVI) has been used in this study. The average LST for the month of January was 23.0°C which fell to 15.7°C for the same month in 2015; whereas in March it was recorded to be 35.3°C and reduced to 32.3°C in 2015. Mean NDVI value has been recorded to be 0.44 in January 2000 which has slightly increased to reach 0.50 for the same month in 2015. For the month of September, it was recorded at 0.49 in 2000 and 0.52 for the same month in 2015. This paper attempts to analyze the spatio-temporal distribution and empirical relationship of vegetation cover and LST using Python.","PeriodicalId":428604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Geographical Studies","volume":"10 11","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132815448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The floods in the town happen mainly due to human made activities about the blockage of natural drainage, haphazard construction of roads, building, and high rainfall intensity. Detailed maps showing flood vulnerability areas are helpful in management of flood hazards. Therefore, present research focused on identifying flood vulnerability zones in the Pune City using multi-criteria decision-making approach in Geographical Information System (GIS) and inputs from remotely sensed imageries. Other input data considered for preparing base maps are census details, City maps, and fieldworks. The Pune City classified in to four flood vulnerability classes essential for flood risk management. About 5 per cent area shows high vulnerability for floods in localities namely Wakdewadi, some part of the Shivajinagar, Sangamwadi, Aundh, and Baner with high risk.","PeriodicalId":428604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Geographical Studies","volume":"47 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123559869","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The quantitative revolution and the development of remote sensing and GIS techniques have brought greater attention to this field of analysis. We have used a morphometric analysis, which is an important indicator to understand the geomorphic stages of evolution of any drainage basin, to compare the drainage basin characteristics and related stages of evolution of a mountain-plain and plateau-plain drainage basin in tropical India. The Kosi basin has been selected for the mountain-plain area and Kangsabati basin is the chosen region for the plateau-plain area. Different drainage morphometric parameters and measurements related to linear, areal, relief characteristics have been determined through the use of SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission) GeoDEM and ARC GIS 10.1. Area-altitude relationship and hypsometric characteristics have also been accessed to identify the stages of geomorphic evolution. All the relief characteristics indicate Kosi in a young or rejuvenated stage when compared to the mature plateau region of the river of Kangsabati. Morphometric characteristics also indicate that there are high geologic and geomorphological controls on river basin characteristics.","PeriodicalId":428604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Geographical Studies","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132072994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Land suitability analysis (LSA) is more suitable, beneficial and environmentally acceptable for SLM. It deals with the assessment of land performances for the specific use like agriculture, plantation, etc. The main objective of the present study was to determine the suitable areas for plantation in the Upper Mula and Pravara Basin. GIS based Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to analyze land suitability for plantation. Criterion like slope, LULC, depth, texture, moisture, SOC, MWHC, pH, EC and primary nutrients were used. Pairwise comparison matrix was used for calculation of weights for criterion and scores were assigned to sub-criterion using field work, experts’ opinions and literature review. Weighted overlay analysis was used for final output raster map. Then cell values of raster map were divided into four classes i.e. 9, 7, 4 and 1. Finally, these classes have reclassified into four suitability levels according to FAO. About 5% of reviewed land is highly suitable, 23% moderately suitable, 14% marginally suitable and 58% not suitable for plantation in the region.","PeriodicalId":428604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Geographical Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130508006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this research, to achieve the optimal cropping pattern, firstly, the study area was classified into six classes and just 2100 hectares of farming area in the top class that had the best agricultural conditions were analyzed. The water assigned to the described land was about 6 MCM [million cubic meters]. Seventeen essential farming product of the area were used for this modeling. In order to maximize the final worth of farming with regard to the quantity of acres of each crop, the optimization model has been applied. The explained model solved by linear programming and also evolutionary algorithms in MS Excel. The results demonstrated full conformity of these two techniques. Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potassium fertilizer have the most consumption for all the products. Also, due to high demand the maximum amount of fertilizer belongs to wheat, barley and rice and the lowest amount of required fertilizer belongs to cotton with the value of 3.8 tons.","PeriodicalId":428604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Geographical Studies","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127935651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In view of this, the present study has been undertaken in Ankaleshwar, one of the biggest industrial townships of India. About, 25 surface sediment /soil samples were collected from top 10 cm representing entire study area and were analyzed for heavy metals by using X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (XRF). The heavy metals concentrations were compared with the standard shale to find out pollution index (PI), results shows the significant enrichment for arsenic, moderate enrichment for Pb and minimal enrichment for metals in descending order as Fe>Mn>Cr>Ni>Co>Zn>Cu>Mo. Physico-chemical properties such as texture, cation exchange capacity, total carbonate and organic matter, as well as the percentages of the sand, silt, and clay fractions have been examined. It is observed that heavy metals like Ni, Cu, Zn, and Mo show a positive correlation with the silt size fraction. Similarly, Mn, Cr, As, and Pb show positive correlation with clay size fraction. Chemical properties like EC, CEC and organic matter have control over majority of heavy metals. High correlation with these properties suggests that higher ionic conductivity soils have high heavy metal content. The effect of these properties can be arranged in descending order as follows: EC >OM > Clay % >Silt % > CEC.","PeriodicalId":428604,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Geographical Studies","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126684028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
