This allows the efficient and accurate use of high resolution direction of arrival (DOA) estimation algorithms. The two source case is analyzed in detail and a critical distance definition is developed that plays a major role in analyzing the resolution performance of an array. A simple procedure is presented for designing a planar array yielding high resolution performance.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":428449,"journal":{"name":"1993 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130930383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The contribution of these operations to the formation of robust and perceptually significant representations in the auditory system is explored. It is demonstrated that the neural representation of a complex signal such as speech is derived from a highly reduced version of its wavelet transform, specifically, from the distribution of its locally averaged zero-crossing rates along the temporal and scale axes. It is shown analytically that such encoding of the wavelet transform results in mutual suppressive interactions across its different scale representations. Suppression in turn endows the representation with enhanced spectral peaks and superior robustness in noisy environments. Examples using natural speech vowels are presented to illustrate the results.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":428449,"journal":{"name":"1993 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131145468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The target performance is at the same level as that of a full-rate coder operating at 6.7 kbit/s. The quantization scheme for the spectral envelope of the MBE coder parameters is described. New features of the scheme include an efficient dimension converter, interframe coding of spectral envelope vectors, and multistage vector quantization with interpolative vector quantization. A simplified model of voiced/unvoiced division and a method of detecting/manipulating background noise have also been devised for MBE analysis. Informal listening tests indicate that, while the quality is slightly lower than that of a full-rate coder, it is nevertheless sufficiently high for digital telephony.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":428449,"journal":{"name":"1993 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132864063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The model uses artificial intelligence techniques to yield output code that is comparable (in some cases superior) to that of handwritten assembly codes by DSP experts. Porting the code generator to different PDSPs requires modifying only two processor-dependent modules: a pattern library and a rule base. A prototype code generator has been implemented, targeting a subset of the TMS32020's architecture and instruction set. Several case studies are presented, which demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":428449,"journal":{"name":"1993 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"19 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132933383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An improved approach able to estimate the global motion and deformation as well as to construct a parametrized global shape of the LV has been developed. The global rigid motion of the LV is computed from the position and orientation change of an estimated time-varying and object-centered coordinate system, while the global deformations are obtained through the fitting of global shape modeling primitives to the given digital volumes of the LV. Major improvements over the initial effort (C.W. Chen and T.S. Huang, 1992) include a robust algorithm for the LV long axis estimation and the implementation of weighted surface fitting based on the original image statistics of the boundary points.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":428449,"journal":{"name":"1993 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133031705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors propose using abutted waveforms for a twin processor processing technique that reduces sidelobe interaction, thereby providing improved clutter rejection. The twin processor requires two looks at the channel, and using abutted waveforms it is possible to obtain both Doppler and range resolution. This makes it possible to design better detectors and to obtain improved estimates of the scattering function. The performance of the abutted waveform matched filter is evaluated and then compared to that of the twin processor.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":428449,"journal":{"name":"1993 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133402256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, he sets objectives for the syntax and semantics of graphical programs. It is shown that the synchronous dataflow model can be extended to multidimensional streams to represent and exploit data parallelism in signal processing applications. The resulting semantics are related to reduced dependence graphs used in systolic array design and to the stream-oriented functional languages Lucid, Sisal, and Silage. In particular, a detailed analysis of the computational savings that can be obtained by minor modifications to this algorithm is performed. A dynamic programming procedure is proposed that automatically determines how often the comparison with the current minimum distance has to be done in order to minimize the expected global cost of the search. The number and position of the comparisons within the distance evaluation loop depend on the ratio of the cost of a comparison operation to that of the partial distance evaluation. It is shown that the two costs are comparable for RISC (reduced instruction set computer) processors, and a 25% speedup with respect to the PDS algorithm is reported for 24 dimension feature vectors used in a continuous-density HMM (hidden Markov model) system with 16 Gaussian mixtures per state.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":428449,"journal":{"name":"1993 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133338401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Preliminary results are given for a simple compression scheme using orthonormal separable wavelet transforms, scalar quantization, rate/distortion optimization, various coding criteria, and a large number of 'wavelet' filters with balanced regularity, frequency selectivity, and phase. It is shown that regularity may be relevant for still image compression, at least for short filters (L<or=12), for which the regularity order is relatively small. Using more regular filters is probably useless, as the compression performance does not greatly improve for longer filters. Moreover, the effect of phase seems negligible for orthonormal filters.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":428449,"journal":{"name":"1993 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132171888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
