In this paper, we propose an extensible framework for on-demand cloud resource provisioning and adaptation. The core of the framework is a set of resource adaptation algorithms that are capable of making informed provisioning decisions to adapt to workload fluctuations. The framework is designed to manage multiple sets of resources acquired from different cloud providers, and to interact with different local resource managers. We have developed a fully functional web-service based prototype of this framework, and used it for performance evaluation of various resource adaptation algorithms under different realistic settings, e.g. when input data such as jobs' wall times are inaccurate. Extensive experiments have been conducted with both synthetic and real workload traces obtained from the Grid Workload Archives, more specifically the traces from the Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our proposed algorithms.","PeriodicalId":427190,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Third International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124652830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Motivation and general application areas are presented demonstrating particular focus on commoditization of HPC resources. Current experiments usually show significant performance differences between CC and HPC infrastructures and also programming models. However, recent research efforts aim at finding a common ground between those approaches. A conclusion emerges that some level of synthesis of CC and HPC is inevitable and probably beneficial for both, however, it requires further significant research efforts.","PeriodicalId":427190,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Third International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121646598","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of currently available commercial Cloud services are built and organized reflecting simple relations between single provider and single customer with simple security and trust model. New architectural models should allow multi-provider heterogeneous services environment that can be delivered to organizational customers representing multiple user groups. These models should be supported by new security approaches to create consistent security services in virtualised multi-provider Cloud environment and incorporate complex access control and trust relations among Cloud actors. The paper analyzes basis use cases in Cloud services provisioning and defines a security infrastructure reference model which is used to define other security infrastructure aspects such as dynamic trust management, distributed access control, policy and security context management. It also provides information about ongoing implementation of the proposed Dynamic Access Control Infrastructure based on Enterprise Service Bus as a part of complex infrastructure services provisioning system.","PeriodicalId":427190,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Third International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128020407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modern Cloud platforms can provide cloud-based applications, software, deployment platforms, or general infrastructure services that may include both computational and storage resources. However existing Cloud provisioning models are based on proprietary solutions and don't allow the combination of services from different providers and/or user legacy application that usually are present in user home organizations or campus networks. This paper introduces GEM Bus (GEANT Multi-domain Bus), a service-oriented middleware platform that allows flexible services composition, and their on-demand provisioning and deployment to create new specialized task-oriented services and applications. GEM Bus is built upon state-of-the-art Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) technologies and extend them with new functionalities that allow dynamic component services deployment, composition and management. The current paper discusses the general case for integration of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) principles and technologies with the provision and deployment mechanisms of Cloud-based platforms to support on-demand infrastructure services provisioning. It describes the Composable Services Architecture (CSA) that provides a general framework for GEM Bus services design and operation. The paper also presents the current GEM Bus implementation status and discusses how it can be applied as a general SOA platform for Cloud-based service provisioning. Finally, it discusses the practical use case of the federated network monitoring service that can be used as integration component in creating/building GEM Bus based Cloud infrastructure services.","PeriodicalId":427190,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Third International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125432979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Resource virtualization is a key enabler for providing such services. Thanks to virtualization, multiple Virtual Machines (VMs) can be hosted by the same Physical Machine (PM). Existing CPs, such as Amazon Web Services and Windows Azure, offer pre-configured VMs with fixed-size computing, storage and network capacities. In this context, end-users can only choose from a set of predefined VM instances offered by the CPs. However, it is expected that, in the near-future, end-users will be able to access the Cloud without any restriction on the size of the required resources. They will be charged according to the amount of resources used. In such scenario, the major problem faced by a CP is to select the appropriate PM that will host a new VM while still satisfying the end-user requirements. This resource allocation problem is similar to the well-known online Bin Packing problem. In this paper, we investigate several algorithms that were proposed to solve the Bin Packing problem, and compare them in a Cloud environment in terms of resource utilization and percentage of dropped VMs. The novel concept of Resource Over-Reservation (ROR) is introduced as a mean to reduce the percentage of dropped VMs and to improve resource utilization.","PeriodicalId":427190,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Third International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115750741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we focus on a parallel implementation of KD-Tree based outlier detection method to deal with large-scale data set. As one of the state-of-the-art outlier detection methods, KD-Tree based has been approved to be an effective algorithm. However, it still cannot process large-scale data set efficiently due to its serial implementation. Based on the current and powerful parallel programming framework -- MapReduce, we propose to implement the parallel KD-Tree based outlier detection algorithm (e.g., PKDTree for short). Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of PKDTree according to the evaluation criterions of scale up, speedup and size up.","PeriodicalId":427190,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Third International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129813842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides a low-cost, highly accessible alternative to other traditional high-performance computing platforms. It also has many other benefits such as high availability, scalability, elasticity, and free of maintenance. Given these attractive features, it is very desirable if automated planning can exploit the large, affordable computational power of cloud computing. However, the latency in inter-process communication in cloud computing makes most existing parallel planning algorithms unsuitable for cloud computing. In this paper, we propose a portfolio stochastic search framework that takes advantage of and is suitable for cloud computing. We first study the running time distribution of Monte-Carlo Random Walk (MRW) search, a stochastic planning algorithm, and show that the running time distribution usually has remarkable variability. Then, we propose a portfolio search algorithm that is suitable for cloud computing, which typically has abundant computing cores but high communication latency between cores. Further, we introduce an enhanced portfolio with multiple parameter settings to improve the efficiency of the algorithm. We implement the portfolio search algorithm in both a local cloud and the Windows Azure cloud. Experimental results show that our algorithm achieves good, in many cases super linear, speedup in the cloud platforms. Moreover, our algorithm greatly reduces the running time variance of the stochastic search and improves the solution quality. We also show that our scheme is economically sensible and robust under processor failures.","PeriodicalId":427190,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Third International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128613750","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve good performance, a MapReduce scheduler must avoid unnecessary data transmission by enhancing the data locality (placing tasks on nodes that contain their input data). This paper develops a new MapReduce scheduling technique to enhance map task's data locality. We have integrated this technique into Hadoop default FIFO scheduler and Hadoop fair scheduler. To evaluate our technique, we compare not only MapReduce scheduling algorithms with and without our technique but also with an existing data locality enhancement technique (i.e., the delay algorithm developed by Face book). Experimental results show that our technique often leads to the highest data locality rate and the lowest response time for map tasks. Furthermore, unlike the delay algorithm, it does not require an intricate parameter tuning process.","PeriodicalId":427190,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Third International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129035505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The central idea is as follows: Customers allow cloud (service) providers to have access to specific data based on agreed policies and by forcing interactions with interchangeable independent third parties called Trust Authorities. The access to data can be as fine-grained as necessary, based on policy definitions, underlying encryption mechanisms (supporting the stickiness of policies to the data) and a related key management approach that allows (sets of) data attribute(s) to be encrypted specifically based on the policy. Access to data is mediated by a Trust Authority that checks for compliance to policies in order to release decryption keys. By these means users can be provided with fine-grained control over access and usage of their data within the cloud, even in public cloud models.","PeriodicalId":427190,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Third International Conference on Cloud Computing Technology and Science","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129295208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
