Des études récentes soulignent l’importance d’assurer la succession de ces PME dans les années à venir. L’option collective de la conversion en coopérative rend possible la continuité de ces entreprises et permet de sauver les emplois qu’elles offrent. Cette option de reprise implique le transfert des actifs et des activités de l’entreprise à ses employés ou à des membres de la communauté regroupés sous la formule juridique coopérative. Malheureusement, on a généralement négligé cette option, ce qui constitue une occasion manquée pour les communautés. Depuis 1980, pourtant, 106 coo- pératives ont repris une entreprise au Québec afin d’assurer sa pérennité sous ce nouveau statut. Les données montrent que, au 1 juillet 2021, 96% des coopératives ayant subi de telles prises de contrôle existent encore. As a result, Social R&D is rapidly gaining popularity among a diversified array of organizations. This article distills the findings of a mix-methods exploratory study and offers a typology of four different Social R&D conceptualizations and practices. An analysis of the literature and of the empirical findings indicates a general lack of shared understanding about what Social R&D entails as a concept or a process. One social economy option in Canada to save businesses and the jobs they provide is to sell them to employees or community members and convert them to cooperatives. The Conversion to Co-operatives Project set out to better understand business conversion to cooperatives (BCCs) in Canada and help the country’s co-op movement build BCC capacity. This article outlines the project’s key findings to date. \u0000RÉSUMÉ \u0000La pandémie a entraîné des conséquences sur la plupart des 1,2 millions de petites et moyennes entreprises au Canada, aggravant de sérieux problèmes pour l’économie du pays, y compris la possibilité de fermetures d’entreprises à grande échelle causées par le nombre croissant de propriétaires au seuil de la retraite qui n’ont aucun plan de relève. Dans cet article, nous avons analysé une expérience menée par un organisme sans but lucratif dont la mission est d’augmenter la participation citoyenne. Nous nous intéressons aux discours et aux outils dont il se sert dans sa formation en entrepreneuriat social. Notre objectif est de repérer les normes et valeurs sous- tendant la conception de citoyenneté transmise au cours de la formation. Nous montrons qu’il y a des tensions entre les objectifs de citoyenneté démocratique promus par l’organisme et le concept de citoyen sous-tendant la formation en en- trepreneuriat social. Specifically, a fundamental challenge facing any nonprofit researcher planning to detect, isolate, and analyze new nonprofits is that nonprofit founding is a process, not a discrete event. This study uses administrative data that includes three different founding indicators from more than 4,000 arts organizations, supplemented with survey data from 242 organizations, to illustrate some of the problems inherent in treating the founding process as one discrete event. This response, however, revealed a series of tensions in the dominant pre-COVID-19 philanthropic model—specifically, as a mechanism to address the social, econ- omic, and ecological crises that predate COVID-19. The early pandemic response of grantmaking foundations can there- fore serve as a model for what a more democratic, agile, collaborative, and justice-oriented philanthropic sector can look like. \u0000RÉSUMÉ \u0000Cet article examine la réponse de fondations philanthropiques canadiennes aux enjeux de justice sociale pendant la pandémie de COVID-19. This article outlines the strategic challenges of a free clinic in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during the pandemic and describes various responses to these challenges. Communication with patients and staff, loss of volunteer practitioners and employee relations are spe- cifically explored. The author argues that implicit aspects of the free-clinic business model positively impacted clinic re- silience and suggests that lessons in workplace culture could be applied across sectors, with the aim of improved resilience during difficult times in the future. \u0000RÉSUMÉ \u0000Le COVID-19 a eu un effet considérable sur la disponibilité des soins de santé aux États-Unis et dans le monde. Cet article décrit les défis stratégiques confrontant une clinique gratuite à Milwaukee, Wisconsin, pendant la pandémie et recense di- verses réponses à ces défis. It has affected Canadian nonprofit organizations in numerous ways. This ranges from the effects of COVID-19 on the health of workers and clients to its effect on revenue. As predominantly essential service providers, nonprofit organizations have to find ways to continue operations during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that no one is left to fall through the cracks in an uncertain economy. \u0000RÉSUMÉ \u0000Comme bien d’autres organismes au Canada et dans le monde, les organismes sans but lucratif (OSBL) n’ont pas été épargnés par la pandémie du COVID-19.
