It reviews how the successive administrations of Roh Moo-hyun (2003–2008), Lee Myung-bak (2008–2013) and Park Guen-hye (2013–2016) strove to assert Korean middle-powerism based on the conceptual foundations of their respective discourses. This paper argues that although South Korea’s strategic role as a middle power toward ASEAN had been limited due to the geopolitical rivalry between the United States and China, in the future this rivalry may open a new avenue of potential to increase South Korea’s strategic role as a middle power, appealing to ASEAN and its member states. This “greatpowerness” is a central element of Russia’s national identity and exerts huge influence in the country’s foreign policy making. Similarly, Asiatic Russia is a prime component defining and promoting Russia’s national identity and its quest for great power status as it conceives of itself as a great power straddling Europe and Asia. This paper looks at the way in which Asiatic Russia is conceptualised under Russia’s great power’s narrative. By the same token, it looks into specific issues of significance for Asiatic Russia, such as migration, demographics and economic development, and the way they have been both politicised and securitised. In this sense, the rise of China presents a major dilemma for Russia: on the one hand, Russia’s actual engagement with China substantiates its identity as a global power; on the other hand, at a regional level China embodies a potential menace to Russia’s greatpowerness. This article analyses relations between Russia and China, and attempts to describe the nexus between cooperation and the country’s claims to great power. It is argued that Russo-Chinese regional interactions are the barometer of the overall RussiaChina relations. To this end, a comprehensive investigation was performed over three weeks at Lamreh, where several archaeological findings had been recovered which consisted of plakIJAPS, Vol. 15, No. 2, 59–88, 2019 Archaeological Remains at Lamreh 60 pling gravestones, imported ceramics, glassware and Chinese coins. The plak-pling gravestones were dated back to the 15th century CE, including one with the inscription of Sultan Muhammad bin Alauddin who was possibly one of the royal officials of the Lamuri Kingdom. The shapes and motifs of the plak-pling gravestones displayed a strong influence of the pre-Islamic Hindu-Buddhist culture. In addition, other interesting findings were imported ceramics, despite their fragmented condition, are both interesting, help with dating the site, and provide a better understanding of economic, social networks and value chains. Morphological, technological and contextual analyses, as well as relative dating, were used to reconstruct the shapes, types, origin and ages of the ceramics, as well as to identify them based on classes of export ceramics from China and Southeast Asia from 14th until the 15th century CE. Additionally, the glassware had been identified as a Chinese type dating back to at least the 13th to 14th century CE. Therefore, these pieces of evidence suggested that Lamreh was an important market for the ceramics trade in Southeast Asia for 300 years. These and other findings had proven that Lamreh was an urban trading centre in the Lamuri Kingdom which had strong connections in both the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean around a thousand years ago.
