Recent anecdotal evidence suggested that this increase occurred again in 2001. Of greater concern, however, is the observation that the number of severe asthma episodes in children also rose sharply. This prompted an investigation to determine whether the reported peak was supported by the data routinely collected by the NSW Department of Health.","PeriodicalId":426489,"journal":{"name":"New South Wales Public Health Bulletin","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121618556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Legionnaires’ disease is characterised by general malaise, a lack of appetite, muscle aches and headache, followed by high fever, chills, a dry cough and pneumonia. Abdominal pain and diarrhoea may occur. Up to 39 per cent of hospitalised patients may die, and the death rate is higher among people who have other underlying diseases. Risk factors for the disease include male gender, older age, smoking, diabetes, chronic lung disease, renal disease, cancer, and immune suppression.","PeriodicalId":426489,"journal":{"name":"New South Wales Public Health Bulletin","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133806698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
