We argue that SDN and NFV capabilities can be exploited in Next Generation Service Overlay Networks (NGSONs) for addressing contex-aware end-to-end data delivery services with adaptive composition of middlebox services when dynamically provisioned as virtual functions. In this paper we present a Service-Oriented SDN controller that allows for the programmable provision of data delivery paths through a dynamically established sequence of virtual middlebox functions, thereby accomplishing the deployment of adaptive network service chains in NGSON. In this way, an extended set of QoS requirements can be addressed that include specifications on processing functions to be traversed by service data while taking advantages from context-awareness and self-adaptation capabilities of NGSON. A use case analyis have been carried out on an experimental testbed about the effectiveness of the proposed approach in differentiating service data processing while optimizing the use of forwarding tables in the switches.","PeriodicalId":426452,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2015 1st IEEE Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131193436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) is a technology that is able to distribute clock frequency over Ethernet networks, while keeping scalability and reduced costs. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is another emerging technology that is changing the landscape of network management by separating the control and data planes and introducing a centralized management architecture, with the goal of optimizing network operations. OpenFlow is currently the most popular southbound interface between the control and data planes in SDN networks. In order to operate SyncE networks under the new SDN paradigm and exploit its advantages, an extension of OpenFlow messages and operations is needed. This paper discusses how SDN and SyncE can interoperate, proposes a set of OpenFlow extensions that are backwards compatible with SyncE equipment, and presents results from a an implementation.","PeriodicalId":426452,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2015 1st IEEE Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131392830","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Discovering network elements in a dynamic and optimized fashion, able to cope with the ever-growing network traffic, is a key requirement for SDN networks, in order to ensure a data center's robustness and manageability. OpenFlow's approach for creating the topology map is by exchanging LLDP frames between the controller and the forwarding elements. This paper proposes a better usage of LLDP by taking advantage of existing hardware capabilities to extract information directly from the data plane to the control plane in order to construct a dynamic and automatic topology discovery algorithm. Following this procedure to obtain the topology map and using the IETF's ForCES framework, we managed to model a generic method for extracting the required LLDP information from the datapath to the controller.","PeriodicalId":426452,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2015 1st IEEE Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128926119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A requirement to achieve this softwarization is the ability to construct on-demand networks across multi-domain network and/or cloud service providers (NCSP). Most current algorithms and MILP formulations that solve the multi-domain embedding problem work on a flat infrastructure using simplified physical resource models. In this paper we propose an abstraction of the physical network domains to make the multiple domains appear as a pseudo flat infrastructure enabling re-use of existing flat infrastructure embedding algorithms with a few modifications. We incorporate these modifications in our previously proposed embedding ILP formulation. Our results show that we can speed up the process of embedding in large multi-domain networks considerably while trading off some efficiency in resource utilization due to abstraction.","PeriodicalId":426452,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2015 1st IEEE Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130129443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Openflow-based deployments, packet forwarding model relies on a set of pipelined tables. However, supporting multiple hardware tables is challenging while having serious limitations. In this paper, we investigate a novel approach to packet forwarding design that tailors Openflow forwarding paths according to the underlying hardware. Its main goal is to provide an optimal mapping of entries to physical search structures. To that end, conceptual abstractions are used in devising a semantically rich and high-performance packet forwarding.","PeriodicalId":426452,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2015 1st IEEE Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130294066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This revolutionary networking paradigm is an attempt to bring the advances in computer science and software engineering into the information and communications technology (ICT) domain. The aim of these efforts is to pave the way for completely programmable networks and control-data plane separation. Recent studies on feasibility and applicability of SDN concepts in cellular networks show very promising results and this trend will most likely continue in near future. In this work, we study the benefits of SDN on the radio resource management (RRM) of future-generation cellular networks. Our considered cellular network architecture is in line with the recently proposed Long-Term Evolution (LTE) Release 12 concepts, such as control-data plane split, heterogeneous networks (HetNets) environment, and network densification through deployment of small cells. In particular, the aim of our RRM scheme is to enable the macro base station (BS) to efficiently allocate radio resources for small cell BSs in order to assure quality-of-service (QoS) of moving users/vehicles during handoffs. We develop an approximate, but very time- and space-efficient algorithm for radio resource allocation within a HetNet. Experiments on commodity hardware show algorithm running times in the order of a few seconds, thus making it suitable even in cases of fast moving users/vehicles. We also confirm a good accuracy of our proposed algorithm by means of computer simulations.","PeriodicalId":426452,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2015 1st IEEE Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125297665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

VLM+ has been developed evolving its Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) based Virtual Link Mapping algorithm precursor (VLM), whose analytical model has been enhanced including the ability to fulfill VL end-to-end QoS requirements and to prioritise VL requests according to their QoS class or revenue profile. Additionally, VLM+ supports three different physical resource sharing policies, this providing Physical Infrastructure Providers (PIPs) with high flexibility in the allocation of resources to embed QoS-constrained VLs. VLM+ has been designed and evaluated targeting next generation networks, conceived around SDN and NFV paradigms and expected to support, among others, delay critical services. VLM+ performance has been evaluated via simulation and compared to VLM, Shortest Path First (SPF) and Constrained SPF algorithms. Promising quantitative results demonstrate VLM+ ability to embed VLs fulfilling end-to-end QoS requirements, still achieving an efficient resource utilisation and at a moderate cost in terms of increased complexity and convergence time.","PeriodicalId":426452,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2015 1st IEEE Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126281462","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The “model-driven” nature of SDI sheds light on the significance of a solid metamodel, which provides a basic abstraction commonly observed in various application/infrastructure domains. We posit that, however, lacking such a simple unified metamodel for SDI today is the barrier preventing broad adoption of the SDI by network service providers. In this paper, we propose a metamodel for SDI management and orchestration. Our framework is extremely simple but sufficiently expressive to be able describe various application/infrastructure domains in SDI. It also provides loose coupling between these domains, allowing each domain to have a domain-specific view while maintaining a unified global view in the orchestrator. These properties make our proposal a promising candidate used in conjunction with the existing modeling languages toward the development of the unified SDI metamodel.","PeriodicalId":426452,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2015 1st IEEE Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft)","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126187244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing provisioning solutions were only limited to provision computing resource (e.g., CPU, RAM and etc.), therefore, it was difficult to provide more advanced cloud services. Virtual Data Center (VDC) embedding, which is known as mapping the VDC resources to their physical counterparts, was recently introduced to provide more advanced cloud services. However, existing VDC embedding solutions were mostly focus on consolidating VMs in single physical data center. Therefore, in this work, 1) we expand the consolidated targets from VMs to network fabrics (e.g, paths and switches); 2) we also consider the VDC embedding problem in multiple physical data centers. In former point, a Traffic Engineering (TE) technique is required to realize the network fabrics consolidation. While, in latter point, a multi-data center VM live migration technique is required to realize the VM migration across the different data centers. SDN, which is a new network paradigm, can fulfill the requirements raised in above two points by providing flow-level virtualization and network address virtualization. With the help of SDN, we propose a Sdn Assisted Vdc Embedding solution - SAVE by consolidating network fabrics along with physical hosts. SAVE includes two VDC embedding algorithms with a TE heuristic, and a holistic system architecture is provided to realize the proposed algorithms. Our experiment results show the feasibility of the SAVE system architecture, and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.","PeriodicalId":426452,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2015 1st IEEE Conference on Network Softwarization (NetSoft)","volume":"38 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116733971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
