In recent years, international organizations of political parties have had a bigger say and greater influence in global governance. The CPC’s international relations with these organizations is a part of its 100-year history. Through various forms of exchanges with international organizations of political parties, the CPC has established a good international image, enlarged its circle of friends, fostered an environment for positive international public opinion towards China, and promoted the international community’s recognition of China’s solutions to global problems. With the urgent need to improve global governance, the CPC’s solutions to global issues, such as building a community with a shared future for mankind, have been increasingly recognized. The CPC enjoys more opportunities and broader space for exchanges with international organizations of political parties.","PeriodicalId":42595,"journal":{"name":"China Quarterly of International Strategic Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43863039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For centuries, the southern part of this ancient trade route also served as a converging point for different civilizations because of its strategic importance in an area where the East meets the West and the South meets the North. At present the China-Pakistan relationship and the revival of the ancient Silk Road are mostly viewed in the context of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). However, this relationship goes back centuries and important aspects to regional connectivity remain understudied. This paper aims to explain the different phases of the relationship between China and Pakistan in the context of the Silk Road and how this historical connectivity played a significant strategic role in regional geopolitics. It traces the roots of this relationship when the old Silk Road was still emerging as the important trade route between Asia and Europe. After centuries, the two countries have again built on reviving this ancient trade route by constructing the famous strategic Karakoram Highway (KKH). The relationship is finally entered its culminating stage in terms of connectivity with the initiation of the CPEC under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.","PeriodicalId":42595,"journal":{"name":"China Quarterly of International Strategic Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"63852077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the context of global carbon neutrality goals and the associated green development consensus, the green BRI, nevertheless, faces multiple challenges: diverse development models and low ecological capacity in most partner countries; negative environmental impact such as greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss caused by large-scale infrastructure construction; room for improvement in China’s green investment rules and environmental governance capabilities; financing difficulties for Chinese overseas green projects; as well as increased competition and constraints from the United States and some Western countries. The significance of the green Belt and Road should be recognized from the lens of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the community with a shared future for mankind. Green Belt and Road rules should harmonize with international standards. Green investment, green trade, green finance, and green technologies should be promoted. At the same time, green cooperation between enterprises and financial institutions should be intensified. In addition, green development knowledge sharing and environmental governance of BRI countries should be enhanced.","PeriodicalId":42595,"journal":{"name":"China Quarterly of International Strategic Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48588733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It shows how Southern countries, like their brothers in the North, played a significant role in the fight against diseases such as AIDS. It unveils that despite its multilateral engagement in global health from the 2000s following its domestic health crisis, the Chinese government engaged in several bilateral health projects to fight pandemics in Southern countries. Using the Chinese-funded HIV/AIDS Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) research and treatment project in Tanzania as its focal point, the paper examines the history of the project from its inception in 1987 to its decline in 2014, and shows the contexts that influenced its establishment, practice, and perceptions by patients. The paper argues that although the Sino-Tanzanian HIV/AIDS TCM research and treatment project was less impactful in addressing the disease and transmitting medical knowledge to local researchers and practitioners, it realized the contribution of countries of the Global South to global health. More importantly, the use of TCM in fighting HIV/AIDS demonstrated the prospects of traditional medicine in addressing global health challenges.","PeriodicalId":42595,"journal":{"name":"China Quarterly of International Strategic Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43127274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new administration’s policy toward the Korean Peninsula is one of the most heatedly debated subjects among policymakers and pundits. The past four years have seen major changes in regional security architecture, the most noticeable of which are dynamics on the Korean Peninsula and intensified China-U.S. strategic rivalry. In this context, a comprehensive overhaul of Mr. Trump’s approach to global affairs is expected under a Democratic administration staffed with foreign policy veterans, and the Korean Peninsula policy will be among the most consequential decisions for Biden’s White House. President Biden’s policy toward Pyongyang will be substantially different from Trump’s approach. A bottom-up, incremental model is likely to replace Trump’s personalized diplomacy marked by flashy summit meetings and “love letters.” Existing sanctions will be maintained until the Biden administration sees substantive results regarding the North’s nuclear and missile arsenal. While keeping up the pressure to coerce Pyongyang back to the negotiating table, President Biden is expected to respond more proactively to Kim Jong-un’s overtures or “provocations” and place a high premium on policy reciprocity. The Biden team will elevate the role of Seoul and Tokyo in its strategic planning and increase trilateral coordination and consultation. Stiff competition is more likely to hinder China-U.S. coordination on the Peninsula. The tone, substance, and results of diplomatic engagement between Beijing and Washington over the nuclear issue in the early days of the new administration will give a foretaste of what could ensue on the Peninsula. Positive initial interactions may generate broader implications for China-U.S. relations, regional stability, and global security at large.","PeriodicalId":42595,"journal":{"name":"China Quarterly of International Strategic Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45857984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In an article published in Strategic Analysis in 2017 entitled “CPEC in Pakistan’s Quest for Energy Security,” the authors raised some questions related to Chinese-funded projects. Based on the overall analysis of various CPEC projects, the paper had reached several conclusions. First, it stated that “the prospects of Pakistan being energy sufficient seem bleak for several reasons” related to the lack of proper implementation mechanisms. Second, it argued that there are discrepancies concerning financing of CPEC energy projects as it was not clear whether it was loan or foreign direct investment (FDI). In the same vein, the authors asserted that “most of the projects would be financed by Pakistan, not by China or other foreign investors.” Third, the paper emphasized that there are concerns that Chinese companies would bring their own labor. The authors also highlighted the issue of tied aid or loans as most of the procurement involved Chinese products and services. And finally, the paper discussed the issue of special incentives given to Chinese companies as they are exempted from various taxes. Based on primary data obtained in Pakistan and complemented by secondary data available in the form of government documents and policy reports of national and international organizations, this paper challenges the major assumptions presented in the previous work on this subject. The study concludes that although there are issues in smooth implementation of projects, the CPEC has the potential to make Pakistan energy sufficient and usher in a new era of development.","PeriodicalId":42595,"journal":{"name":"China Quarterly of International Strategic Studies","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"63852063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
