Since then, considering only those researchers who consider themselves to be urbanists, its presence and influence has waned. National conferences are no longer held and edited collections of national scope no longer published. Fewer researchers who are doing research on cities in the past consider themselves to be urbanists and, in contrast with the earlier period, these are almost exclusively historians. The decline in Canada is in contrast with the situation in the United Kingdom and the United States, partly because of differences in national geography and in the salience of urban issues, and partly because of a smaller pool of academics and the lack of an institutional base. The immediate future offers few signs of change.RÉSUMÉ: L’histoire urbaine du Canada a connu son heure de gloire dans les années 1970 et au début des années 1980. Depuis, si l’on ne tient compte que des chercheurs qui se considèrent comme des urbanistes, sa présence et son influence ont diminué. Il n’y a plus de conférences nationales et des recueils de portée nationale ne sont plus publiés. Peu de chercheurs qui étudient le passé des villes se considèrent comme des urbanistes et, comparativement au passé, il s’agit presque exclusivement d’historiens. Le déclin au Canada est en contraste avec la situation au Royaume-Uni et aux États-Unis, partiellement en raison des différences de géographie nationale et de l’importance de questions urbaines, et partiellement en raison d’un plus petit bassin de chercheurs et du manque de structures institutionnelles. Rien ne laisse prévoir de changements importants à cet égard dans un avenir rapproché.","PeriodicalId":42574,"journal":{"name":"URBAN HISTORY REVIEW-REVUE D HISTOIRE URBAINE","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42593814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a response to the general challenge issued by Richard Harris, who observed a decline, or at least a certain stagnation, in the field at the national level. By focusing on Quebec historiography, this article aims to ascertain if that is truly the case and, if so, to try to determine why that is and what we could or should do to rectify the situation. Yes, historical geography research flourishes, but the teaching of historical and urban historical geography has all but vanished, except in a tiny number of larger departments. Pourtant, la recherche en géographie historique est en plein essor, mais l’enseignement des géographies historique et urbaine historique a à peu près disparu, à l’exception de quelques occurrences dans les plus gros départements. The authors conclude that the city remains an important frame of analysis for Canadian historians. Recent work by Canadian environmental historians demonstrates that historians continue to address urban developments, but their contributions are less likely to appear under the umbrella of “urban history” and even less likely to be framed nationally as “Canadian urban history.” A preference for single-city studies over comparative works and a bias against recency has constrained examinations of rich histories of urbanization in Canada over the past 40 years.RÉSUMÉ:Dans le cadre d’un plus large forum sur l’état de l’histoire urbaine au Canada, le présent article examine la littérature récente dans le domaine de l’histoire urbaine environnementale canadienne. Les auteurs concluent que la ville reste un important cadre d’analyse pour les historiens canadiens. Des travaux récents par des historiens environnementaux canadiens démontrent que les historiens continuent à traiter du développement urbain, mais que leurs contributions sont peu susceptibles d’être considérées comme de l’« histoire urbaine » et encore moins comme de l’« histoire urbaine canadienne ». Clément","doi":"10.3138/uhr-2021-0003","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3138/uhr-2021-0003","url":null,"abstract":"ABSTRACT:Non-profit organizations have been an indelible feature of urban life in Canada since at least the nineteenth century. They have also, since the 1970s, come to rely heavily on state funding from all three levels of government. Yet scholarship on how the state has used its spending power to shape the non-profit sector is entirely focussed on provincial and federal policy. In part, this reflects the immense obstacles to collecting historical data on municipal funding. This article provides a methodology for collecting data on municipal funding for the non-profit sector. It is based on a study of 25 municipalities in British Columbia. For historians, this type of research offers unique insights into the policies and politics of municipal governance; the diversity of Canada’s non-profit sector; how urban communities have changed over time; the shifting dynamics in the relationship between the state and civil society; and how local governments use their spending power to shape the non-profit sector. It provides an opportunity to better understand the emergence a network of organizations that makes possible modern urban life.RÉSUMÉ:Les organismes à but non lucratif sont une caractéristique persistante du paysage urbain canadien depuis au moins le 19e siècle. Et depuis les années 1970, leur financement dépend toujours plus largement des trois paliers de gouvernement. Pourtant, les travaux de recherche sur la manière dont l’État modèle le secteur à but non lucratif par son pouvoir de dépenser se concentrent uniquement sur les politiques provinciales et fédérales – ce qui reflète en partie l’immense difficulté que représente la collecte de données historiques sur le financement municipal. Cet article propose une méthode de collecte de données sur le financement municipal du secteur non marchand. La méthode est basée sur l’étude de 25 municipalités de Colombie-Britannique. Pour les spécialistes de l’histoire, ce type recherche fournit des renseignements exceptionnels sur les politiques et la politique de la gouvernance municipale ; la diversité du secteur à but non lucratif au Canada ; l’évolution des collectivités urbaines au fil du temps ; la dynamique changeante de la relation entre l’État et la société civile, et la manière dont les gouvernements de proximité se servent de leur pouvoir de dépenser pour modeler le secteur à but non lucratif. C’est également un moyen de mieux comprendre l’émergence d’un réseau d’organismes qui rendent possible la vie urbaine moderne.","PeriodicalId":42574,"journal":{"name":"URBAN HISTORY REVIEW-REVUE D HISTOIRE URBAINE","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49361185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
