On the basis of the introduction of a transient fuel consumption model of the diesel Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) and a battery equivalent fuel consumption model incorporating a charge-sustaining strategy, a novel Semi-Global Optimisation (SGO) problem is formulated to minimise the vehicle fuel consumption, which is defined over a relatively shorter time horizon characterised by the quasi-steady-state time constant of the diesel engine. A two-stage real-time optimisation algorithm is developed to solve this problem, including the precomputed Static Instantaneous Optimisation (SIO) to obtain the basic power distribution map, and the online adaptive dynamic compensation optimisation considering the transient loss of the diesel APU. Computer simulation work is carried out to evaluate the proposed energy management strategy.","PeriodicalId":425490,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Alternative Propulsion","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132746852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A hybrid dynamical system theory is introduced to formulate the problem of hybrid vehicle control system design that incorporates both continuous and discrete dynamics. The sequential quadratic programming method is proposed to optimise power distribution. The dynamic programming method is employed to determine the vehicle operating mode transitions with optimal fuel efficiency and satisfactory drivability. An expert rule-based system and a fuzzy system are developed to implement the optimal strategies using the statistical method based on numerical solutions. The simulation results illustrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed design method.","PeriodicalId":425490,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Alternative Propulsion","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124116391","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To limit the associated increase in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, smart strategies for the generation, storage/retrieval, distribution and consumption of the electric power can be used. This paper considers a vehicle configuration with a conventional drive train. Two energy management strategies that control the alternator power are analysed: a regenerative braking strategy and a more advanced strategy based on optimisation techniques. The potential behind these strategies is analysed by studying the typical characteristics of components that are directly related to the energy flow in the vehicle. It is shown that operating the internal combustion engine at the highest efficiency will not inherently lead to the lowest fuel consumption. Subsequently, engineering rules are presented to evaluate the performance that can be expected for each strategy. The component characteristics are included as input parameters to make the method generally applicable. To show the value of the engineering rules, the potential fuel reduction is computed for a specific vehicle configuration and driving cycle and compared with simulations results.","PeriodicalId":425490,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Alternative Propulsion","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124176129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different programming problems are formulated for the operating modes 'hybrid propulsion', 'electrical propulsion' and 'regenerative braking'. Numerically robust solution procedures are developed and applied to these problems. The resulting set values for the power plants are stored in look up tables and embedded into the vehicle controller. It is shown that the model of the drivetrain losses inherent in the programming problems influences the fuel consumption a great deal. Numerical computations reveal which of the losses influence the fuel consumption most. Furthermore, a way of circumventing a detailed description of the mechanical gearbox losses is derived from a physical understanding of the energy flow through the transmission. The considerations are not restricted to a specific drivetrain, but are to a great extent generally applicable to hybrid electric vehicles of the power-split type.","PeriodicalId":425490,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Alternative Propulsion","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129089239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Power-Based Model (PBM) was created and the results were compared with data from the University of Idaho's ultracapacitor hybrid Future Truck. The PBM accurately predicts vehicle fuel economy and allows quick simulation speed. This model includes a derived Internal Combustion (IC) engine fuel map with interpolation function and a random capacitance generator for balancing circuit implementation. Experimental data showed that the Future Truck averaged 15.9 mpg operating non-hybrid whereas the PBM predicted 16.8 mpg for a non-hybrid set-up over the same drive cycle, a 5% difference. PBM as shown can accurately predict the vehicle performance including the added benefits from implementing an ultracapacitor array and balancing circuits. Using PBM, it is seen that ultracapacitors are a viable energy storage solution for hybrid electric vehicles.","PeriodicalId":425490,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Alternative Propulsion","volume":"51 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113939323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Successful HEV design requires optimal sizing of its key mechanical and electrical components. Recently, energy management strategies for HEV have been extensively studied. In addition, for a HEV to be as efficient as possible, proper management of its energy elements is required. Several research studies have been focused on the optimal sizing of HEV components. In this case, a fixed control strategy is employed. On the other hand, there are a number of studies on the optimisation of HEV power management strategy to find the optimal control parameters. In this case, the component sizes are fixed. This paper presents an overview on HEVs including trends, features and recent research efforts in this field.","PeriodicalId":425490,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Alternative Propulsion","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122265742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two test series (A and C) involved a total of 13 firings of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) fuel grains and series B involved nine firings of DCPD grains loaded with various amounts of lithium aluminium hydride, LiAlH4 (LAH). A laboratory-scale combustion chamber with a 4.09 cm diameter was used in all firings. Regression rate data have shown a substantial increase as compared to RGHP/low-density polyethylene oxidiser/fuel combination. Results with the LAH-loaded grains showed comparable regression rates, but disappointing levels of combustion efficiency.","PeriodicalId":425490,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Alternative Propulsion","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132462571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
