This reading raises several difficulties, the most striking among them the question why Jacob does not flee his attacker and return to his family the moment he overcomes his attacker, but rather demands his blessing. This article proposes a new reading of this struggle which solves these narrative conundrums. It is not Jacob who triumphs over his attacker, but the divine being who in fact triumphs over Jacob. In so doing, the essay offers one of few full length treatments devoted to Tobias in the tale. Analyzing the terminology used to refer to Tobias in conjunction with the shifts in characterization he experiences over the course of the story, the essay proposes that as Tobias advances from being a child, to young manhood, and finally matured manhood, he comes to replicate the model of masculinity passed down to him from his father. Pajunen, Anne Katrine de Hemmer Gudme","doi":"10.1080/09018328.2019.1686279","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/09018328.2019.1686279","url":null,"abstract":"The present theme issue of the Scandinavian Journal of the Old Testament on the functions of psalms and prayers in the Second Temple period emanates from a two-part international conference on the same topic held in Copenhagen in May 2015 and in Helsinki in September 2015. The conferences gathered almost thirty scholars from Europe and North America working on psalms and prayers. The conferences were generously supported by the Joint Committee for Nordic Research Councils in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOS-HS), the Emil Aaltonen Foundation, and the Academy of Finland Center of Excellence: Changes in Sacred Texts and Traditions (CSTT). The papers presented at the conferences were edited by Mika S. Pajunen and Jeremy Penner and published in 2017 (de Gruyter, BZAW, 486). Research on psalms and prayers in ancient Jewish literature is in a stage of transition in these years. In light of the wealth of firsthand evidence on the uses and functions of psalms and prayers in late Second Temple Judaism provided by the Qumran manuscripts, a view of the Masoretic Book of Psalms now in the Hebrew Bible simply as a hymnbook of Second Temple Judaism is no longer sustainable. The uses and functions of psalms and prayers now appear to have been significantly more varied and multivalent than what was previously assumed, and new models concerning the composition, categorization and functional classification of psalms and psalm collections are needed in order to advance scholarly understanding of these texts and their social and historical contexts. The main aim of the two conferences was to facilitate a discussion about fresh trajectories that research on psalms and prayers should take in the coming years. A second objective was to strengthen Nordic research collaboration in this area of Biblical Studies. {"title":"The Influence of Societal Changes in the Late Second Temple Period on the Functions and Composition of Psalms","authors":"Mika S. In previous studies the question has typically been seen as an either-or issue between liturgical, educational, and prophetic use of the psalms. It is shown in this study that all these different uses persisted at least until the end of the Second Temple period, were common to both now biblical and apocryphal psalms, and together contributed to the emergence of a canonical book of psalms. While it will be demonstrated that a division of psalm material cannot be based on such functional indicators or a sense of prestige given to a specific collection of psalms, it will be argued that the Maccabean revolt led to a historical process that incidentally created a watershed between most psalms composed before and after this gradual process. Such markers are visible in the style of the psalms and their functional markers but most of all in a marked shift of perspective from a more general aim to influence the whole people of Israel common to earlier psalms to the consistent use of group perspectives in later works. This shift in the perspective of psalms also contributed to the recontextualization of many earlier psalms to new settings, which further contributed to a later perceivable boundary between the earlier and later psalm material.
