This information forms the basis of the subsequent charging process. For performing these tasks in case of heterogeneous mobile networks a generic configuration management, specifically tailored at the provisioning of various Internet services is needed. This work defines a role model covering all participating entities of a distributed service provisioning environment for mobile networks together with key requirements. In addition, it outlines different accounting scenarios and proposes an architecture for a generic, technology- and service-independent configuration management of accounting in a distributed, mobile, and multi-provider environment. In turn, the approach specifies required configuration and state information in network components. The key to a successful PN realization is a general network architecture that is capable of bridging different current and future technologies and offers a homogeneous and clear view to the end-user. In this paper, we focus on forming a PN by connecting remote personal devices using infrastructure-based IP networks, including 3G networks and WLAN hotspots. One way is to upgrade the current access networks with new functionality to support PNs. Since many devices in PNs are mobile and battery powered, this may help them to achieve a faster service and to save energy. However, to deploy such functionality is not easy and may hamper the adoption of PNs altogether. Therefore, we propose an intra-PN communication architecture that will work over current IP networks. To discern the above proposal we also give a detailed picture of PN network architecture and infrastructure supported PNs. QoS Seeker addresses the realistic situation where the QoS delivered to an end user's wireless VoIP application is a complex function of location and time. It attempts to dynamically inform the user of the location he should go to in order to obtain the optimal QoS for the current VoIP connection. To achieve its goals QoS Seeker continuously collects position information and VoIP QoS metrics - such as packet loss, packet delay, and received signal strength, from all connected users. This information is coupled to adaptive prediction technology in order to predict the future QoS metrics at all locations within the area spanned by the wireless network. We present results from various experiments of this system, where the positioning information is obtained from GPS devices embedded on mobile laptop systems and smaller hand-held devices. We also present simulations of a large scale QoS Seeker system which determines the conditions under which QoS Seeker would not function usefully. The effect of realistic position errors are also investigated on both real data and simulated data, and the usefulness of the predictive algorithms embedded within QoS Seeker are analyzed. The proposed adaptive streaming system nicely provides frame-based prioritized packetization by developing a real-time MPEG-2 TS (transport stream) parsing tool. It then dynamically performs priority-based droppings of packets according to the network status observed by end-to-end monitoring. The implemented system thus can mitigate the long-term fluctuations of time-varying channel only with negligible delays. The usage of existing analytical models of 802.11 MAC in sizing requires a mapping from application load and performance to link-layer load and performance respectively, which we propose in this paper.We first evaluate analytical models of 802.11 MAC from the sizing perspective and then propose an approximate sizing method. In such situations employing one device namely a Mobile Router for the mobility management of the entire network would be a lucrative solution in terms of performance and costs. Such an architecture has been proposed and standardized by the IETF's Network Mobility Working Group [1]. In this paper we present our implementation of a mobile hotspot using a Mobile Router architecture and give initial results on our performance study. Supported by advanced WLAN hotspot grid infrastructures, mobile terminals may enhance their computing capabilities significantly by utilizing remote resources in virtually shared spaces. Due to privacy and performance issues, the shared communication objects should be kept in proximity to the roaming owner which requires object migration.We propose a novel self-adaptive decision algorithm for object migration based on a cost-benefit function. This function considers parameters describing the expected latency caused by migration and the expected response time saved by local access. The importance of each parameter is determined by a weight and adapted using Bayesian concept learning. The feasibility of the approach is demonstrated by a prototypical implementation for PDAs based on the space-based middleware CORSO.
