Our goals are two fold: maximizing the number of concurrent real time sessions while minimizing the buffering requirements, and ensuring a high degree of reliability. The first goal is achieved by adopting a pipelined approach and by reducing latencies through specialized disk caching and constrained data placement schemes. The second goal is achieved by dividing the disks into RAID 3 reliability groups which serve as pipeline stages. We note that the buffering requirement decreases as the number of groups increases. To improve the performance further, we introduce two techniques for more efficient movie retrieval: on arrival caching, and interleaved annular layout. We present a case study of the performance of these techniques which shows a significant improvement when they are incorporated.","PeriodicalId":423754,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125430157","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The development of optical storage and compression/decompression technologies means that millions of pieces of multimedia information can be readily diffused and transmitted to people who intend to acquire those information to become their knowledge. But does this type of computer-supported learning system necessarily improve the effectiveness of learning? The paper proposes a theoretical framework which can be used to study the value of multimedia knowledge diffusion, i.e. where knowledge is transmitted from a sender through communication channels for a receiver to internalize and retain these information. We also discuss the findings of an experiment in evaluating the effectiveness of multimedia in enhancing people's learning ability.","PeriodicalId":423754,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126983007","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To effectively utilize a disk array and hence to maximize the number of clients that can be serviced simultaneously, a multimedia server must interleave the storage of each media stream among the disks in the array. We identify two placement policies for organizing storage of multimedia objects on disk arrays. We present methods for optimizing the performance of server for both the placement policies, and empirically validate and evaluate the methods through extensive trace driven simulation.","PeriodicalId":423754,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"193 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128436068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Digital multimedia, together with CD ROM technology now enables production of interactive textbooks and dictionaries for sign languages on personal computers. The paper presents the key technological and contents requirements for learning to sign from a point of view of deaf as well as hearing persons. The technological requirements are then measured up with the current Multimedia PC Level 2 specifications. An alternative representation for sign language based on edge images derived from sequences of video frames is proposed to achieve higher video compression ratios. The fulfilment of contents requirements is demonstrated by an example of the Sign Language Dictionary and Tutor.","PeriodicalId":423754,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems","volume":"159 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127388383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
