This non-perturbative and non-factorisable physics in particular cannot currently be constrained from theoretical principles, and hence parameter optimisation against experimental data is required. This process is commonly referred to as MC tuning. We summarise the principles, problems and history of MC tuning, and the still-evolving modern approach to both model optimisation and estimation of modelling uncertainties.","PeriodicalId":423578,"journal":{"name":"Multiple Parton Interactions at the LHC","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117147763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this chapter, the different types of possible correlations, our present knowledge of them, and the processes where they are likely to be important, are introduced and explained. The increasing integrated luminosity at the LHC and the refinements of the theory of double parton scattering, lead to interesting prospects for measuring, or severely constraining, two-parton correlations in the near future.","PeriodicalId":423578,"journal":{"name":"Multiple Parton Interactions at the LHC","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130888151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The relation of the rise of the gluon density at small longitudinal momentum fractions x with the occurrence of saturation, diffraction and multiparton interaction is being studied both experimentally and theoretically. We express the cross sections through the double (triple, ...) generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In the mean field approximation for the double GPDs the answer is expressed through the integral over two gluon form factor which was measured in the exclusive DIS vector meson production.We explain under what conditions the derived expressions correspond to an intuitive picture of hard interactions in the impact parameter representation. The mean field approximation in which correlations of the partons are neglected fail to explain the data, while pQCD induced correlation enhance large $p_perp$ and $ 0.001 < x < 0.1$ typically enhance the cross section by a factor of 1.5 -- 2 explaining the current data. We argue that in the small x kinematics ($10^{-4} le x le 10^{-3}$) where effects of perturbative correlations diminish, the nonperturbative mechanism kicks in and generates positive correlations comparable in magnitude with the perturbative ones. We explain how our technique can be used for calculations of MPI in the proton - nucleus scattering. The interplay of hard interactions and underlying event is discussed, as well as different geometric pictures for each of MPI mechanisms-pQCD, nonperturbative correlations and mean field. Predictions for value of effs for various processes and a wide range of kinematics are given. We show that together different MPI mechanisms give good description of experimental data, both at Tvatron, and LHC, including the central kinematics studied by ATLAS and CMS detectors, and forward (heavy flavors) kinematics studied by LHCb.","PeriodicalId":423578,"journal":{"name":"Multiple Parton Interactions at the LHC","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128693072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The basic parameter of the factorized $n$-parton scattering ansatz is an effective cross section $sigma_{rm eff}$ encoding all unknowns about the underlying generalized $n$-parton distribution in the proton (nucleon). In its simplest and most economical form, the $sigma_{rm eff}$ parameter can be derived from the transverse parton profile of the colliding protons and/or nucleus, using a Glauber approach. Numerical examples for the cross sections and yields expected for the concurrent DPS or TPS production of heavy-quarks, quarkonia, and/or gauge bosons in proton and nuclear collisions at LHC and Future Circular Collider (FCC) energies are provided. The obtained cross sections are based on perturbative QCD predictions for $sigma_{rm SPS}$ at next-to-leading-order (NLO) or next-to-NLO (NNLO) accuracy including, when needed, nuclear modifications of the corresponding parton densities.","PeriodicalId":423578,"journal":{"name":"Multiple Parton Interactions at the LHC","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126916048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
