In this article, a radial artery pseudoaneurysm that developed after the intervention for hemodialysis at the antecubital area in a 60-year-old female patient undergoing routine hemodialiysis for chronic renal failure was described. The most important causes of pseudoaneurysms in cardiovascular surgery are catheter applications and new arteriovenous shunts on the forearm. This study aimed to investigate characteristics of pneumonias in KT recipients by focusing on clinical and radiographic findings and diagnostic methods over a long study period. MATERIAL and METHODS: The medical records of kidney transplant recipients who had a diagnosis of pneumonia from 1988 to 2011 were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Among 406 consecutive KT recipients, 20% had pneumonia during the study period and total 111 episodes of pneumonia developed in these patients. Fifty-six percent of the pneumonias were community acquired and 44% nosocomial. Bacterial infections were the most common cause (20%) and 13 (12%) of the episodes were polymicrobial. Antibiotic usage in the last three months was significantly more common in fungal pneumonia episodes than others. Bronchoscopy had the highest final overall diagnostic yield. CONCLUSION: Community-acquired pneumonia was more common, but it showed a more benign clinical course. Bacterial pneumonia was the most common cause, but polymicrobial infection was present in a significant number of KT recipients. Fungi can invade KT recipients, in particular, patients in the interval of 1-6 month after transplantation and patients who have used antibiotics in the last three months. We aimed to compare the effect of different dialysis modalities on inflammation and other complications in a one-year prospective follow-up. MATERIAL and METHODS: The patients were divided into three groups depending on their dialysis requirements and compared in terms of inflammation and complications. Group 1: The patients who had acute dialysis indication and started urgent PD (n=23), Group 2: The patients who had acute dialysis indication and started urgent HD (n=21), Group 3: The patients with no acute dialysis indication and started dialysis two weeks after PD catheter insertion (n=20). RESULTS: HD patients had significantly lower urine levels and higher hemoglobin levels after 12 months in comparison with other groups. Complications of catheter-related infections were similar among the three groups, although catheter-related leaks were only found in the urgent PD group. There were no differences in terms of inflammatory markers among the groups. Clinical outcomes of CKD could be improved with early referral. In this study, we aimed to emphasize changing clinical and laboratory features of stage III and advanced CKD in children in the last 15 years at our clinic. MATERIAL and METHODS: The medical data of pediatric patients who had estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRs) of ≤60ml/min/1.73m2 treated at our hospital from January 1995 to December 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. Data were evaluated in three separate observation periods; period 1: January1995 to December 1999, period 2: January 2000 to December 2005, period 3: January 2006 to December 2011. Statistical analysis was conducted using chi-square and t-tests as well as Pearson correlation analysis in SPSS 20.0. RESULTS: A total of 242 patients (107 females; mean age 8.56±4.74 years) were included in the study. The leading cause of CKD was urologic diseases (136 patients, 56.2%). Recognizing the CKD children in late stages decreased over time. The number of children diagnosed and managed in a pre-dialysis program significantly increased during period 3. The rate of patients who required urgent dialysis was greater in period 1 (76.5%) than in period 2 (46.1% ) and period 3 (27%),(p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Based on our results, the frequency of urological abnormalities did not change significantly overtime. On the other hand, the need for urgent dialysis significantly decreased over time. There was no correlation between the duration of dialysis treatment with anxiety or depression but the post-transplant time was positively correlated with anxiety and depression.
