I am delighted to announce that the Asia Pacific Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy (APJCP) is now included in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) of Clarivate Analytics. It is really a big step forward for the development of the journal. I am grateful to all former and recent members of our editorial board for their contributions to the APJCP in past years and to all colleagues of Taylor & Francis team for their hard work in journal promotion and publication. I am also thankful to all of the authors, reviewers and readers of APJCP for their continuous support. This issue is a collection of qualitative and quantitative research studies in the counselling and psychotherapy-related field from Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Nigeria, New Zealand and India. Keith Tudor and Brigitte Viljoen offer a scoping review that provides our readers with a broad overview of the therapeutic approaches and theories historically and currently practiced in the South Pacific Region. They take efforts to explore indigenous healing traditions in the region, and how Western and Northern counselling and psychotherapy influence regional counselling and psychotherapy practice in the era of post-colonialism and post-modernism. Therapeutic alliance is among the most important factors leading to beneficial results in counselling and psychotherapy. Due to cultural differences, however, there are slight regional variations in the types of relationship quality associated with successful therapeutic outcomes. The Barrett-Lennard Relationship Inventory is an instrument to assess Rogerian therapeutic relationship. Faith Liao, David Murphy and Godfrey Barrett-Lennard translate and validate a full Mandarin-Chinese version of the BarrettLennard Relationship Inventory. It can be used for practice and research purposes in counselling and psychotherapy services in Chinese communities. For successful counselling, positive behaviour change occurs not only during but also between counselling sessions. There are numerous potential factors that can prevent the implementation and enactment of treatment recommendations by clients in their lives outside of the therapy room. Brett Furlonger, Steven Kiley, Dennis Moore, Margherita Busacca and Philip Chittleborough evaluate the effectiveness of a collaboratively designed self-management program using a single-case experimental design with baseline, intervention and post-intervention follow-up. This study provides evidence for the use of a cognitive-behavioural self-management counselling intervention and also gives insights to practitioners on how to use single-case experimental design to inform their own practice in the field of counselling and psychotherapy. Multiple influences may serve as pathways to professional development and growth. The study explored practitioner perceptions of a range of influences on their development as therapists. The Development of Psychotherapists Common Core Questionnaire-India (DPCCQ-I) was completed by 250 mental health practitioners with diverse professional backgrounds and experience levels, practising in India. A section assessed therapists’ ratings of ten potential influences, both positive and negative, on their professional development. Thse results indicated that experiences in therapy with clients, reading books and journals, therapists’ personal life experiences, and case discussions were perceived as having the most positive impact on development as a therapist. The most frequently reported negative influences were institutional conditions, experiences with clients, and personal life experiences. The strength of influences in select domains varied according to therapist experience levels and professional background and was significantly associated with indices of therapist perceptions of their skills and growth in therapeutic work. These results are discussed in the context of unique practice realities in India. Implications for professional training and continuing development are outlined.","PeriodicalId":42294,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy","volume":"9 1","pages":"106 - 86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/21507686.2017.1416416","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49233050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study adopted the pre-test–post-test, control group, quasi-experimental study design. The instrument used was the Nigerian version of Spielberger’s Test Anxiety Inventory. Students with scores ≥51 were considered to be test anxious. A total of 160 test anxious students were assigned to the experimental and control groups. The Experimental group was exposed to seven weeks training in the REBT, while participants in the control group received training in Health Education. The effect of the therapy (REBT) was significant at 0.05 alpha level(1F = 2, 220) = 54.66, P = .000. There was no significant 2-way interaction between therapy and gender (F = 1.573; P > 0.210). The result suggested that the REBT treatment approach was a success in reducing examination anxiety of the students. It was therefore recommended that school counselling psychologists/counsellors in Nigeria should continuously update their skills in the use of the REBT to assist secondary school students to overcome their test anxiety disorder.","PeriodicalId":42294,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy","volume":"9 1","pages":"61 - 76"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2018-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/21507686.2017.1412329","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44849302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One hundred and twenty-one psychiatric outpatients with depressive symptoms joined monthly support groups for 10 months and in between, attended 6 workshop sessions on specific topics. The support groups were run by lay mental health ambassadors recruited from faith communities in the same district of the clinics. Results reveal significant reduction of symptoms and increase of self-efficacy. Canonical functions are statistically significant and regression model accounted for a total of 39% and 40% variance for pre-group and post-group data, respectively. The asset-based approach to engage and build the capacity of partners such as the faith community appears to be effective. This study suggests new possibilities to support mental health recovery.","PeriodicalId":42294,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy","volume":"8 1","pages":"150 - 164"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2017-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/21507686.2017.1349684","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49314604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with eight participants from low-functioning families. By using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, the researchers identified four primary themes representing the hope experience and meaning in the participants’ life situation: (a) adverse conditions, (b) motivation of interest, (c) positive thoughts and (d) relationship support. The findings support and contribute new aspects to the knowledge of hope study. The results highlight ‘positive thoughts and relationship support’ as the integral part of the phenomenon of hope. It suggests that college counsellors should assess the availability of perceived positive thoughts and relationship support in order to design tailor-made programmes for the young adults. College counsellor and academic staff may collaborate on curriculum design through which teacher can use classroom activities to promote students’ hopeful thinking. College counsellor can play an important role in developing hope within the classroom.","PeriodicalId":42294,"journal":{"name":"Asia Pacific Journal of Counselling and Psychotherapy","volume":"8 1","pages":"131 - 149"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2017-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/21507686.2017.1348369","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47044397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"心理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
