The laser etching process is noncontact, maskless, selective, and offers a high spatial resolution. Although the topic has been the subject of numerous recent studies, basic parameters for understanding interactions between polymers and high energy photons are not well understood. In this paper we present the results of a recent study on VUV optical properties of several polymeric materials including polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polystyrene (PS), polyvinylacetate (PVA), polyimide (PI), and polycarbonate (PC) and review parameters that are critical for understanding the interaction of polymers with excimer laser radiation. Results of a study of the surface compostions using small area x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of two kinds of polymer, PMMA and PS, irradiated with an ArF laser at a photon energy of 6.4 eV are discussed. A simple model is then presented to show how various parameters including optical constants, photon energy, laser fluence, and polymer structures affect characteristics of photon etching observed in these polymers.

Freezing the DTfuel in a uniform layer within the container aids in achieving the densities required for fusion. A documentation system has been developed which is used to record both classical interferograms of solid IF fuel layers within the container and then holographic interferograms of plasma as the container implodes. This optical system has the advantages of visible and UV utility, 2–4-µm resolution, and a low space requirement. Both systems share a catadioptric objective lens and a refractive relay lens. The visible classical interferometric beam and the UV pulsed holographic probe follow different off-axis paths within the object cone of the lenses. While the solid layer is being formed, the beam is diverted to a shearing cube interferometer using a lens-mirror assembly on a sliding stage. This assembly then slides out of the way before the implosion to admit the UV probe to the holographic camera, which records four holographic interferograms of the imploding plasma separated in time by 40–400 ps. The two operational modes, shearing interferometer and holographic, are serial; switching from one to the other requires only seconds.

The laser consists of a mode-locked dye laser, synchronously pumped by a mode-locked argon-ion laser. The dye laser operates at 616.0 nm and is cavity-dumped, with the output pulses sent to a fiber-grating compressor. The resulting pulses are <500 fs in duration. These pulses are amplified in a series of Nd:YAG-pumped dye amplifiers, doubled in KD*P, and sent through two XeCl excimer amplifiers. Typical output pulses exceed several millijoules with <1-ps FWHM duration, yielding focused intensities of 1015W/cm2 on various targets. Plasma diagnostics include a grazing incidence monochromator, an x-ray streak camera, and particle detector. Additionally, we describe several novel methods for measuring subpicosecond plasma emissions in the x-ray and visible/IR spectral regions.

Certain multibeam Borrmann eigenmodes of the radiation field within a perfect crystal containing resonant Mossbauer nuclei exhibit much less photoabsorption and much stronger coupling to the nuclei (provided the nuclear transition is of multipolarity M1 or higher) than do the single plane wave channels of an amorphous system (or equivalently, off-Bragg in the crystal). These modes offer the possibility of achieving lasing with orders of magnitude less population inversion density than would otherwise be the case, provided a nondestructive means is found to achieve a population inversion. The radiation in these modes would emerge from the crystal in a number of well-defined beams, each collimated by Bragg diffraction to an angular divergence of from 10-5to 10-4 rad. The properties of these multibeam modes as they relate to gamma-ray lasers, as well as the effects of crystallinity on the optics of systems which decay by superradiant rather than stimulate demission, are discussed.

Wilson
This talk presents spectroscopic evidence for the existence of the four-atomic rare gas halide exciplex Ar3F.1 It is identified through its broadband emission from electron beam excited high pressure Ar/F2 and Ar/NF3 mixtures at (435 ± 50) nm. The temporal behavior of the Ar3F emission as well as the Ar2F/Ar3F intensity ratio shows that the four-atomic species is produced by three-body collisions from Ar2F. However, it is easily destroyed by two-body collisions due to its small binding energy of < 0.2 eV, which can be inferred from the binding energy of \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 Ar\u0000 \u0000 3\u0000 +\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 . The assignment of the blue emission continuum is further confirmed by the observation of a similar, previously unassigned emission from liquid Ar/F2 mixtures.2 Abnormalities in the Ar2F kinetics found in earlier investigations can now be partially explained by the formation of Ar3F, and partially by electron quenching of ArF and Ar2F. The existence of four-atomic rare gas halide exciplexes could impact on the absorption behavior of rare gas halide lasers. Recently, doubts have been raised as to whether the main absorber in the KrF lasers is, in fact, Kr2F, because the absorption cross section of this molecule appears to be too small. The possible formation of four-atomic exciplexes has to be taken into account for the determination of the absorption cross sections of trimers, as well as for the investigation of scalability of rare gas halide lasers.

The laser gain-vs-absorption approach, which is a two-laser pulse-and-probe technique, obtains quantum yields from a single time-resolved transient. The initial population inversion following photolysis and the total absorption after complete quenching of the excited state species are measured on a short (~10-μs) time scale. Due to the nature of the internal normalization of the measurement, most experimental parameters cancel, and very accurate results can be obtained. In this work, gain-vs-absorption measurements are per formed with a room temperature InGaAsP diode probe laser. Quantum yields determined at 266 nm for n-C3F7I, i-C3F7I, and CH3I are 102 ± 4%, 102 ± 7%, and 73 ± 4%, respectively. The results are in good agreement with the majority of earlier works, except for recent photoacoustic measurements which gave much lower values.2

A crystal of 3 mm in length was pumped longitudinally by a krypton laser at 647.1 nm in a nearly concentric cavity. A64% output slope efficiency was measured with an output coupler of 1.16% transmission at 768 nm. The maximum output power reached 1.65 W with 3.63 W of pump power and was pump power limited. These results are among the highest in efficiency reported in laser-pumped Cr lasers operating in a quasi-cw mode. The calculated round trip laser loss was 0.11% in our sample, corresponding to 0.36%/cm. The laser quantum yield was 76%. A tuning range of 720-842 nm was achieved with a single element birefringent filter. Excitation spectra indicated that the relative fluorescence quantum yield was close to unity in the visible region of the emerald absorption bands. The calculated emission cross section was 3.3 × 10−20cm2 at 750 nm for the c-axis polarization. The excited state absorption was estimated from the laser results to be 20% of the stimulated emission cross section at 768 nm. The pump power threshold of the present laser was at 230 mW with a 60-µm pump beam radius. A scheme for the miniaturization of a tunable emerald laser to accept diode pumping is also discussed.

The Raman medium is hydrogen at 1-100 atm. We are studying the use of an electrooptic crystal to place a π phase shift in the Stokes beam between the generator and the amplifier. This shift momentarily causes energy transfer from the Stokes to the pump beam. Surprisingly, numerical calculations indicate that in one configuration the speed of the electrooptical switch need not be faster than the coherence time of the medium to generate a soliton pulse considerably shorter than the coherence time. Thus it appears that this technique can be used to generate pulses considerably shorter than those produced using standard electro-optical switching techniques. Numerical calculations and experimental results are presented.

Unlike conventional laser-induced processes which generally involve both surface and gas phase photochemistry, the present technique involves only photon-induced surface chemistry. Thus, it is termed laser-induced surface chemical epitaxy (LSCE). The results of x-ray photoelectron studies of thermal and photon-induced surface processes aimed at understanding the mechanisms of the technique are described. This includes measurements of reactant sticking coefficients, contaminant levels, and the identification of surface photodecomposition and reaction products. The impact of these results on the feasibility of the LSCE technique and the potential for depositing quantum well and related structures are also presented.
