From Romantic ghosts to Decadent female corpses, male authors spin tales of necrophilia. Animated by the male lover's thoughts and desires, women are often simply ventriloquized through the male narrator, a sort of Pygmalion nécromancien. Within this patriarchal discourse of silenced females, Isabelle Eberhardt and Rachilde innovate the genre by giving a voice to their female characters, whether as subject (Pygmalion) or object (morte amoureuse). At a time when women were expected to write about marriage and motherhood, these quintessential rebel female figures revisit common masculine tropes through a feminist lens.If Decadence is about disease and decay, the mortes amoureuses of Rachilde and Isabelle Eberhardt are not decomposing bodies, but they are monstrous in other ways for the male character they encounter: they have feelings. Infernalia: Volupté sépulcrale by Isabelle Eberhardt, and Monsieur Vénus and La Tour d'amour by Rachilde, discuss female pleasure, or lack thereof, due to men's impotence (both emotional and physical). They emphasize the unilaterality of masculine desire, and deflate the male's ego by suggesting his inability to elicit pleasure. In their versions of the myth, Pygmalion is a failure as the female body remains immune to his attempt at ventriloquization. Ils se meuvent, s’agitent et les narrateurs avec eux, qui franchissent souvent des océans, chaussés de bottes de sept lieues, caméra au poing. Que cherchentils les uns et les autres sinon un alibi d’existence, au gré d’aventures en cartonpâte préemptées par d’innombrables scripts auxquels plus personne, pas même eux, ne semble croire? Le motif cinématographique, fonduenchaîné à la mémoire de genres littéraires mineurs, seraitil là pour piéger le vivant, le figer à même la pellicule sur un mode drolatique? Arrête ton cinéma: cette injonction familière, les lecteurs de Jean Echenoz l’inversent, tant l’écrivain, porté par sa mémoire des genres communs à la littérature romanesque et au Septième Art, fait rire aux dépens de personnages croqués à vif, s’effrayant de déambulations dont les causes sont aussi vaines que les effets sans lendemain. Seules la tenue d’une narration ourdissant ses pièges existentiels et la teneur d’une langue valant pour tout éthos d’écrivain leur confèrent entre rire et blues un style dans le désastre. La relation entre roman et cinéma fut longtemps placée sous le signe d’une prédation réciproque. L’un et l’autre énoncent la société et parlent le monde en piratant leurs ressources respectives, quand leurs auteurs euxmêmes ne se veulent pas écrivainscinéastes (André Malraux) ou cinéastesécrivains (Christophe Honoré). Le pillage est joyeux dans l’œuvre d’Echenoz, qui emprunte à la cinémathèque des films de catégorie B: polar (Cherokee), espionnage (Le Méridien de Greenwich), aventures (Les Grandes Blondes), comédie à l’américaine (Au Piano, avec en guest star parmi les personnages Dean Martin et Dora Dol). Cet appétit cinéphile de romancier le conduit aussi à quelques incursions dans un genre informel qui tend à se développer simultanément en littérature— la biofiction—et au cinéma—le biopic.
