Adams","doi":"10.1353/neo.2020.0012","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/neo.2020.0012","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:Over the years, prayer passages within the Fourth Gospel and 1 John have been examined in detail apart from one another. This work seeks to analyse them in light of one another, particularly the prayer passages located within the Farewell Discourse (14:12–14; 15:7–8, 16; 16:23) and 1 John (3:21–22; 5:14–18). This article begins by exploring how the Farewell Discourse prescribes prayer as the means by which greater works will be performed and much fruit produced in Jesus's physical absence. Then attention is given to demonstrating that the author of 1 John, dissatisfied with the prayer tradition in the Farewell Discourse, provides a nuanced account that focuses on how confidence in prayer relates to real-life, ethical scenarios within the community he addresses (3:11–24; 5:14–17). Finally, this article concludes by arguing that the discussion of prayer in 1 John 5:14–17 is more concerned with the preservation of the believing community than its numerical growth. Attention will be given to analysing the prerequisites, privileges and purposes of prayer in both documents in order to provide a more complete, nuanced profile of Johannine prayer. It is my distinct honour and privilege to dedicate this article to the great Johannine scholar, Dr Jan van der Watt.","PeriodicalId":42126,"journal":{"name":"Neotestamentica","volume":"54 1","pages":"105 - 128"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/neo.2020.0012","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42890074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"The Logos as \"Flesh\" in John 1:14 and 6:51–57: Formulating a Christology for the Liberation of Animals from Humanarchy","authors":"L. Nortjé-Meyer","doi":"10.1353/neo.2019.0026","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/neo.2019.0026","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:Animal theology or animal liberation is a recent initiative led by Andrew Linzey (1986). It emerged from the Liberation Movement pioneered by Gustav Gutiérrez in 1971. The wider field to which animal liberation belongs, namely eco-theology, was soon anchored in the feminist movement, as eco-feminists drew parallels between the exploitation of the environment and the oppression and abuse of the marginalised. The Old Testament and the New Testament are ambivalent about the position and circumstances of animals and their associations with humans. The language is mostly anthropocentric, with a few eco-centric voices. According to John's Gospel, the transcendent God became the immanent Jesus, who became physically and bodily embedded in life on Earth. This emphasises his interconnectedness with the Earth and the common origin of all beings. One crucial question in this regard is whether the redemptive act of Jesus also includes animals, since it is claimed by the \"instrumentalist view\" that animals have no immortal souls. Applying a critical approach to the God-human-animal relation, the outcome of this article will be the formulation of a Christology for the liberation of animals, undermining humanarchy over animals. Although the focus is on animals, animals cannot be separated from the entire ecological environment.","PeriodicalId":42126,"journal":{"name":"Neotestamentica","volume":"53 1","pages":"535 - 555"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/neo.2019.0026","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49627011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using ritual healing theory, a subdivision of the discipline of social anthropology, the study argues that healing rituals are communicative practices that function to reveal the contradictions (unhealthy to healthy; possessed to normal) within a patient's life and to symbolically overturn the existing condition. The study discovers that the lack of supposed contradiction in some rituals by African Pentecostal healers, evident in rituals such as kissing or feeding the congregants grass or snakes, makes it imperative to ask and critique the efficacy of such healing rituals. The article concludes with an exegetical section on the healing rituals found in Mark 1, with the intention to reveal the meaning and efficacy of each healing ritual.","PeriodicalId":42126,"journal":{"name":"Neotestamentica","volume":"53 1","pages":"479 - 489"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/neo.2019.0029","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42908041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It seeks to demonstrate that the presence of an adverbial καί at the head of a first class condition effectively signals that neither its satisfaction nor its dissatisfaction nullifies the claim in the apodosis. While the protasis of an εἰ καί condition normally presents a contrary-to-fact notion, such need not always be the case. What seems clear, however, is that the New Testament writers deploy the εἰ καί structure in part to indicate that they would concede the truth of the protasis only with reluctance. Such is in keeping with the normal additive effect that adverbial καί has on the meaning of whatever discourse unit it modifies. This understanding of the meaning of εἰ καί conditions differs greatly from the opinion of those who treat their protases like concessive clauses. Hence, what a second class condition does to deny the truth of its apodosis (and, by extension, also its protasis), an εἰ καί condition does instead to affirm the same while casting doubt on the protasis. Approaching the Greek New Testament's examples of εἰ καί conditions with such an understanding generates a number of potential ways to improve the New Revised Standard Version.","PeriodicalId":42126,"journal":{"name":"Neotestamentica","volume":"53 1","pages":"437 - 458"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/neo.2019.0040","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47066756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MacDonald has published numerous books and articles arguing that narrative literature of the New Testament imitates Graeco-Roman epic by reinterpreting and reframing important episodes of the Homeric cycle with figures of early Christianity. Reaction to his work has been largely negative, as commentators commonly object that the Jewish Scriptures were more probable conversation partners for early Christian writers than Homer. The present article suggests that both MacDonald and his detractors may benefit from comparing Homeric imitation in Josephus's Life with purported Homeric imitation in Luke-Acts.","PeriodicalId":42126,"journal":{"name":"Neotestamentica","volume":"53 1","pages":"491 - 515"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/neo.2019.0038","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42910813","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"哲学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
