Fixed-size contexts (with adaptive tables) are also widely used, in conjunction with arithmetic encoders, in state-of-the-art codecs. In contrast, we propose a simple two-dimensional filter that directly outputs the probability distribution function (PDF) estimate necessary to drive an adaptive arithmetic encoder. The filter is isotropic, in the sense that the impact of a previously encoded bit depends only on its value and distance to the bit to be coded. Surprisingly, this simple filter yields results comparable to or better than JPEG2000. It also brings an interesting distinction between on-line and off-line learning, and their relative importance in compression.","PeriodicalId":420897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2002. We expand the theoretical foundations of LPSA (lexical permutation sorting algorithm) (see Arnavut, Z., and Magliveras, S.S., The Computer Journal, vol.40, no.5, pp.292-5, 1997) from permutations to multiset permutations (data strings) and give the general theory behind the BWT combinatorially. We investigate two approaches. The first is an application of the Boyer-Moore algorithm (1977) to a transformed string. The second approach is based on the observation that the transform effectively contains a sorted list of all substrings of the original text, which can be exploited for very rapid searching using a variant of binary search. Both methods are faster than a decompress-and-search approach for small numbers of queries, and binary search is much faster even for large numbers of queries.","PeriodicalId":420897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2002. We present a new wavelet coding technique, flexible block wavelet coding (FBWC). It is specially designed for delta frame compression. FBWC not only makes delta frame compression more efficient but also keeps the rate scalability and other scalabilities of wavelet based scalable video compression techniques. Based on this new delta frame compression technique, we have implemented a highly efficient rate scalable video codec. Its overall performance surpasses the video codec based on SPIHT and is comparable to that of H.263. Using FBWC, delta frames are compressed in three steps: First, we use motion compensation to eliminate the temporal redundancy between adjacent frames and the predicted error frames (PEF) are generated. Next, the PEF are transformed into the wavelet domain using the flexible block wavelet transform (FBWT). Finally, the zerotree coding mechanism and entropy coder are used to actually compress the FBWT transformed wavelet coefficients to the target data rate.","PeriodicalId":420897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2002. However, wavelet coders are less adept at representing perceptually important edge singularities, and coding performance suffers significantly as a result. We propose a novel two-stage image coder framework based on modeling images as edge cartoons + textures. In stage 1, we infer and efficiently code the edge information from the image using a multiscale wedgelet decomposition. In stage 2, we code the residual, \"edgeless\" texture image using a standard wavelet coder. Our preliminary coder improves significantly over standard wavelet coding techniques in terms of visual quality.","PeriodicalId":420897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2002. In this paper, the reason for this performance failure is identified, and a remedy is proposed. A multiwavelet design criterion, omnidirectional balancing, is introduced to extend to vector transforms the balancing philosophy previously proposed for multiwavelet-based scalar-signal expansion. Additionally, a family of symmetric-antisymmetric multiwavelets is designed according to the omnidirectional-balancing criterion. In empirical results for a vector-field compression system, it is observed that the performance of vector wavelet transforms derived from these omnidirectionally-balanced symmetric-antisymmetric multiwavelets is far superior to that of transforms implemented via other multiwavelets.","PeriodicalId":420897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2002. This paper describes an adaptive error recovery technique for a DWT-based coding and transmission system, which recovers singularity information as well as continuity. The approach provided in this paper not only interpolates from the boundary, but also maintains the sharpness in background instead of smoothing the discontinuity out. The recovery function is modeled by the numerical solution of a special category of elliptic equation. The difference between adjacent data can be adjusted by the given weights. The choice of the weights allows high flexibility in maintaining contrast, since we can give small weights where we have evidence for edges.","PeriodicalId":420897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2002. Data storage issues pose a potential problem in the performance and analysis of turbulence simulations. One tool that has successfully addressed such performance problems in other domains is data compression. Unfortunately, data from turbulence simulations does not usefully compress with lossless methods. In this work, the compression of data from a simulation of barotropic turbulence using wavelet-based lossy coding is examined. The resolution of the data used is 512 by 512. The output of this simulation is the relative vorticity as single precision floating point values. A number of quantities are computed from the relative vorticity. The numerical error in these quantities is evaluated along with visualizations of the vorticity and error correlation with the uncompressed data. It is found that depending on the quantities of interest and the evaluation criteria, compression ratios of 4:1 to 256:1 are achievable. Under a conservative definition of acceptable error, it is possible to recover quantities of interest from data compressed 4:1 (8 bpp), the data rate that in existing practice is used for visualization.","PeriodicalId":420897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2002. Most existing image coding techniques resolve the uncertainty of an image source on a pixel-by-pixel basis. We demonstrate the effectiveness of region-based image models for the class of palette images. We propose to represent the index map of a palette image by a collection of successively refined color regions, from which the original index map can be reconstructed without any error. Within the framework of region-based modeling, we present a conditional coding approach to avoid information leakage during the multiple passes. Motivated by the distinguished characteristics of palette images, we propose to exploit topological property of isolated uniform-color regions while resolving the uncertainty of region boundaries. Our region-based image model not only provides an embedded representation of palette images in the topological space but also achieves excellent compression performance.","PeriodicalId":420897,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings DCC 2002.
