With our interval-based output buffer transmission control method the data stream behavior is regulated in each network node and a data stream dependent time parameter adjustment is performed in each control process. Lightwave networks employing TWDM are commonly based on optical passive star couplers. To overcome some existing technology constraints, a general hardware configuration that each station uses multiple fixed transmitters and fixed receivers is proposed. The increasing number of active traffic sources results in increasing amount of feedback traffic in the current congestion control schemes. The proposed scheme resolves the problem using the generic flow control (GFC) field as a feedback notifier which informs the congestion state from a network node to a broadband network termination (B-NT) system, and includes a decision method on the actual network congestion state. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme through computer simulation. We compare the performance of the proposed scheme with that of the scheme using leaky bucket. For the point-to-multipoint connection, the ITU-T will study its signaling protocol for broadcasting, and has recommended it for a multicasting service. We survey the signaling capability of point-to-multipoint connection control for the multicasting service. The ATM network consists of ATM switching nodes, which should have service connection control functions. We consider a fully distributed ATM switching system for modularity, flexibility to burst traffic and real time processing, and propose a control method for a multicasting service in the switching system. For point-to-multipoint connection control, we adopt the dynamic bandwidth allocation method for the efficient usage of the links between subsystems, and consider an efficient scheme for utilizing the cell replication function at the nearest ATM switch to a destination party. The motivation behind this study is to find a cost effective solution for minimizing the impact of active hand-offs (hand-offs during an active connection) on connection throughput. Existing solutions either provide total guarantee for seamless communication, incurring heavy network bandwidth usage (multicast based approach), or do not provide any guarantee for seamless communication (unicast based approach). Some other solutions are tuned to give good performance for specific protocols (e.g., fast-retransmit approach). This paper proposes a novel staggered multicast approach which provides a probablistic guarantee for seamless communication independent of the communication protocol used. We present experimental results of performance improvements achieved by our scheme, for data transfer using TCP over a wireless network in the presence of active handoffs. Most studies on multicast routing have been based on a single multicast tree (a shortest path tree or a minimal Steiner tree) approach. By using only a single multicast tree for a multicast group, satisfying the maximum delay bound requirement is nearly impossible. To fulfill these requirement, we adopt the multiple multicast tree concept whose disadvantage is the high tree maintenance cost. Since the tree maintenance cost is proportional to the number of multicast trees for a multicast group, it is necessary to minimize the number of multicast trees. In this paper, we formulate the delay-bounded multicast tree (DBMT) problem whose main objectives are to satisfy an application's maximum delay bound among the group members and to minimize the number of multicast trees needed for a group communication. We categorize the DBMT problem according applications' needs into two subproblems, the shortest path tree-based DBMT (SPT DBMT) and the minimal Steiner tree-based DBMT (MST DBMT) problems. For the DBMT subproblems, we prove the NP-hardness and propose heuristic algorithms. We focus on deflection routing in the Benes network. Since deflection routing forces packets to take multiple paths to the destination, packets may arrive out of sequence. This requires the use of a reassembly window at the destination. We estimate the effect of a finite reassembly window on the performance of deflection routing under both uniform and nonuniform traffic conditions. We also investigate the effect of output buffering at intermediate nodes. Both methods improve performance significantly. Multiple classes of MPEG-I are used in the study and what makes this simulation study different from the others is the video data used. These data are captured from real video programmes and we categorized these video clips according to their workload characteristics. The performance of the ATM switch is examined in terms of the cell miss ratio due to deadline missing and the cell loss ratio due to buffer overflow in both the ATM switch as well as the gateways. Moreover, a higher level of abstraction in terms of burst loss ratio is also collected. The results indicate that the first-come-first-serve scheduling algorithm is insufficient to handle real-time traffic. We propose a service networking architecture suitable for VoD services based on the TINA compliant model. The applications in this architecture are deployed as units of software managers. Each manager provides a layered view for the effective management and control of the multimedia network resources and services according to the concept of TMN and TINA. For the purpose of flexible service provision to users and effective service introduction by service providers, this architecture proposes the adoption of ad hoc service managers such as a video on demand (VoD) manager and a protocol for transactions between those. This paper also proposes a reference scenario for interworking of the TINA-like model with the WWW environment.
