In order to study the inhibiting capacity of the chemical used, experiments were per- formed in solutions involving treatment of synthetic sea water with different concentrations of the polymer. Polyacryla- mide gave significantly lower precipitation rate compared to the treatment in absence of inhibitor. The inhibitor probably is adsorbed on the active growth sites of the initially formed crystals. The performances of scale inhibitor with different concentrations were analyzed in terms of the amount of soluble calcium ions in solution. The results showed that the amount of scale was reduced to 0.00%, with, 10-15 ppm polymer additions, after 1 day incubation at 90°C. Antiscale agents specific to calcium sulphate deposits have recently been developed and tested on a laboratory scale. The work was also extended to study the corrosion inhibition of polyacrylamide to both C-steel and copper specimens in contact with synthetic cooling water environment. Electrochemical polarization techniques reveal that the inhibitor acts as anodic type with respect to C-steel and mixed type for copper. Corrosion current jcorr and corrosion rate CR were reduced and inhibi- tion efficiency IE% increases with polymer additions. The inhibition effects are due to the formation of protective film. Morphological investigation for CaSO4. 2H2O gypsum crystals formed in synthetic sea water indicate reduction of cal- cium sulphate crystals in the presence of the polymer as indicated by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies.","PeriodicalId":420093,"journal":{"name":"The Open Corrosion Journal","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124929994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The oxidation kinetics was recorded with a thermal microbalance. The morphologies and microstructures of the oxide scales were examined using SEM, EDS, and XRD. Fe-10Al developed an Al2O3-rich scale during the initial stage of oxidation, and a non-protective scale containing oxides of Fe and Al formed. Mixed oxides of Al and Fe formed firstly on Fe-5Cr-10Al, but an externally dense and continuous Al2O3-rich scale formed. The initially formed Fe oxides were locally reduced to Fe-rich particles. Fe-10Cr-10Al formed an Al2O3-rich scale from the onset of oxidation and this slowly growing scale was protective up to 50 h. The Cr additions to Fe-10Al were beneficial for re- straining the oxidation of Fe, but that did not promote the transition from metastable Al2O3 to  -Al2O3.","PeriodicalId":420093,"journal":{"name":"The Open Corrosion Journal","volume":"225 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123022433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the underlying corrosion mechanism is still under debate. In this paper we show that Raman spectroscopy next to electrochemical methods (linear sweep voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) can successfully be used to help in identifying the corrosion products of Zn-Mg coated galvanized steel (ZMS) when dipped into 3 wt. % NaCl aqueous solution at ambient temperature (25 °C). The obtained results are compared to galvanized steel. This study reveals that in the case of ZMS, Mg is mainly anodically dissolved forming a compact layer of Mg(OH)2/MgO and MgCO3. It is believed that the formation of this compact layer and the insulating properties of MgO, due to its large band gap, are responsible for the increased corrosion resistance of the alloy.","PeriodicalId":420093,"journal":{"name":"The Open Corrosion Journal","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125077519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In both cases the oxide film consisted of two layers and was identify as magnetite. In the case of HWC this results are agree with previous reports that mentioned to magnetite as stable phase in reducing condi- tions; however the presence of magnetite crystals in NWC has not been reported due to the stable phase in oxidant condi- tions is hematite. This situation permit infer that inside the pre crack of CT specimens the environmental conditions was different with the oxidant bulk, and probably a poor oxygen access and stagnant conditions within the narrow crack, pro- moted a localized reducing environment that permitted the magnetite formation. Is evident that the crack growth studies should be considered the conditions inside crack because is significantly different. Results obtained showed that PVP effectively reduces the corrosion rates of aluminium in the acid medium. Inhibition efficiency (%I) increases with increase in concentration of PVP. Increase in temperature increases corrosion rate but decreases inhibition efficiency. The addition of iodide ions enhanced the inhibition efficiency of PVP considerably. Adsorption of PVP and PVP + KI fol- lowed Temkin adsorption isotherm. Phenomenon of physical adsorption is proposed from the obtained E a and G ads values. The synergistic parameter (S1) obtained was found to be greater than unity, which indicates that the enhanced in- hibition efficiency caused by the addition of iodide is only due to synergistic effect.","PeriodicalId":420093,"journal":{"name":"The Open Corrosion Journal","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114839383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By using this test device, the crack tip deformation and surface po- tential distribution were observed on SUS310S stainless steel by SKFM and KFM. At the same time, the distribution of hydrogen was examined by the Ag decoration method with the EDX image mapping analysis combined. Moreover, the existence of hydrogen-induced martensite was examined by the magnetic force microscope (MFM) observations. The re- sults showed that the less noble potential region existed at whole crack and Ag precipitated at less noble potential region in most cases. The MFM and KFM observation showed hydrogen-induced martensite existed at the less noble potential part. SCC is caused by the formation of hydrogen-induced martensite ahead of the crack tip.","PeriodicalId":420093,"journal":{"name":"The Open Corrosion Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121153304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was pointed out that the capacitance variation of space charge layer of carbon steel in different solution was different. The carbon steel showed p-type semiconducting behavior in 5% sulfuric acid and 5% sodium sulfate solution. However, the carbon steel showed n-type semiconducting behavior in 5% sodium hydroxide. It was suggested that the space charge layer of the carbon steel in different electrolytes might be asymmetric.","PeriodicalId":420093,"journal":{"name":"The Open Corrosion Journal","volume":"346 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114008436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
