Concha","doi":"10.29393/ac62-pejc10001","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29393/ac62-pejc10001","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract: Before El roto (1920) which gave its author a wide audience in South America and across the Hispanic world, Joaquin Edwards Bello wrote a number of texts which include his two earliest narratives, El monstruo and El inutil (not yet translated into English). Both novels were published by the Centennial; both keep a close connection between them, inviting useful comparisons. The theme of loss -lost ideals, lost illusions, lost faith in political values, etc.- allows an intensive exploration of the national character, dominated by the opression of family and social class. However, his figure and his work have barely been addressed by the scholar research. This work aims to identify, through a qualitative content analysis, the characteristic of El camino mas corto, which will allow us to know the incidence of New Journalism in the production of this book and to delve into the phenomenon of Literature of travel. The use of literary resources, the meticulousness of the descriptions and the personal and creative style, among other characteristics, confirm the framing of this work in the New Journalism. Neves","doi":"10.29393/ac62-llmn10007","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29393/ac62-llmn10007","url":null,"abstract":"“I think a writer’s homeland isn’t a specific language, but rather language in general.” Juan Marse’s sentence will surprise many victims of simplistic ideas, be-cause it is very far from certain “pious lies” about what literature is, what it is made of and how it relates to the ideas of nation and language. In this article, we focus on an open wound in the relationship between language, literature and nation: the linguis-tic situation in Catalonia. However, conclusions may be useful for further studies in the Hispanic, Iberian and Literary Studies spheres. The focus of our analysis will be Juan Marse’s novel El amante bilingue. A traves de dicha mirada se advierte una realidad concebida al interior del discurso barqueriano que se configura como la mancomunion ancestral integrada por vivos y muertos, en donde estos ultimos activan su participacion en el texto en calidad de fantasmas o figuras espectrales. Esta reformulacion prosopopeyica de la muerte, producto de una cosmovision panteista, rehuye los postulados de una fe trascendente y se traduce en una inmanencia que, si bien en los inicios de la obra barqueriana afecta solamente al clan de los antepasados del hablante, en su obra tardia termina asumiendo un caracter universal. Deploying Rob Nixon’s theory of the “unimagined communities”, the article discusses the critique of the neoliberal and extractivist model proposed in the novel. {"title":"La Quintrala y Barrabás: figuras del exceso en la pluma de Geronimo de Ugas: Una lectura a partir del juicio de residencia del gobernador Meneses (1670)","authors":"Bernardita Eltit Concha","doi":"10.29393/AC62-QBBE10004","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.29393/AC62-QBBE10004","url":null,"abstract":"In this article, I suggest that both Francisco de Meneses, commonly re-ferred to as Barrabas, and Catalina de los Rios Lisperguer, the famous Quintrala, can be interpreted as figures of excess. While the former, as governor, drove the possi-bilities of poor governance to its limits, the latter provides a quintessential example of the impunity that members of powerful families enjoyed in the 17th century. Both characters are symptoms of the corruption of local power, particularly evident when we analyze their relationship. Their alliance can be erected on an actantial pole which opposes the judicial persecution expressed in allegation No. 133 of Meneses’s trial of residency. This text, narrated by the scribe Geronimo de Ugas, is based on two trials against Catalina de los Rios in the decade of 1660. In this work, Ugas becomes a true narrator, witness, and character, if we consider the eminently fictional nature of the text, as Smietniansky has observed in these kinds of reports. He also personifies the scribe’s function as both textual authority and witness of reality, allowing other voices to emerge, such as those of the people who, in order to save themselves and their families, escaped the Ligua encomienda estate, as well as the voice of Catalina de los Rios herself, succeeding in his efforts to manipulate the trial in her favor. In this article I analyse these chronicles from a literary perspective and I describe the literary resources and the enunciating position that make these texts unique among the colonial Spanish Ameri-can chronicle. El analisis de la forma en que es procesada la injusticia por el protagonista del cuento, nos permite entender el sentido final del despojo de tierras de que es objeto en tanto esta desposesion se extiende a la perdida de la posibilidad construir un espacio politico capaz de transformar su propia vida y la de la comunidad. Nuestro estudio atiende, asi, al modo en que se produce, en “Calixto Garmendia”, la destruccion de la instancia politica desde la cual solo es posible reclamar sus derechos. La injusticia, en su mas nociva dimension, seria la clausura de cualquier posibilidad de abandonar nuestra condicion de victimas.
