Biochemical composition, fatty acids, cholesterol and amino acids composition of this species inhabiting these seas were investigated. Mediterranean Sea samples have the highest; Aegean Sea samples have the lowest lipid and cholesterol contents as 0.9 g/100 g, 147 mg/100 g and 0.3 g/100 g, 137 mg/100 g, respectively. ∑PUFA were determined as 30.29%, 19.85% and 19.28%; ∑n-3/∑n-6 was calculated as 6.62, 4.72 and 4.40 for Marmara, Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, respectively. DHA was the main PUFA among others for all samples. The highest mean essential amino acids were lysine (1826 mg/100 g) and leucine (1397 mg/100 g), while highest non-essential amino acids were glutamic acid (2860 mg/100 g) and glycine (1673 mg/100 g). As a result, it can be said that deep sea pink shrimp inhabiting in Marmara is the most valuable source of ∑PUFA with the highest values of DHA and EPA among other seas. Aegean Sea is the poorest source especially essential amino acids contents of the species.","PeriodicalId":417095,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Food and Nutritional Disorders","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127662776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is important to maintain patients’ general health and quality of life during the treatment. It is known that radiation-related complications have impact on the quality of life in patients. Researches revealed that a balanced diet and regular physical activity could increase quality of life in cancer patients receiving radiotherapy. In addition, determining the lifestyles in terms of health behaviors of cancer patients is indeed important in terms of optimizing their treatment outcomes and welfare. The aim of the study was to determine dietary and physical activity habits in patients receiving radiotherapy using the questionnaire. The questionnaire was composed of five sections: socio-demographic data, type of cancer, anthropometric measurements, dietary and physical activity habits. One hundred eighty-eight patients were reached during the study. Patients included in this study had different type of cancer. Only 35% (n=45) of patients reported being physically active. Sixty-eight percent of patients (n=89) skipped meal where as 31% of these patients (n=28) have skipped meals due to lack of appetite. Daily water consumption was 2 litres for 17% (n=22) patients. Most patients consumed protein foods (meat, fish, egg and beans) with 89% (n=116) and fruit-vegetables with 72% (n=93). In this study cancer-related and worse prognostic factors were determined. Our results suggested that cancer patients may require professional support and practice for nutrition and physical activity.","PeriodicalId":417095,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Food and Nutritional Disorders","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117320895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, they have the tendency to undergo autoxidation decreasing the nutritive value and producing off-flavours during storage. Antioxidants are necessary to be added to the foods containing EFAs. Considering the consumers’ demand to utilize natural ingredients, the research has been now fostered on natural antioxidants. These natural antioxidants can be the most trusted substitutes to unsafe synthetic antioxidants. Moreover, with the medicinal properties of the natural antioxidants, the consumers can avail the benefits of them as therapeutic agents. In our study, we have used ajowan as a source of natural antioxidant to stabilize EFAs in sunflower oil. The extraction of ajowan seeds was carried out by ethanol. The crude extract was purified to isolate thymol rich fraction using column chromatography. The crude ajowan extract was found to be more effective as an antioxidant than the purified extract, i.e., thymol rich fraction. Thus, the other constituents present in the extract besides main constituent (i.e., thymol) have remarkable influence on the antioxidant activity of the main constituent.","PeriodicalId":417095,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Food and Nutritional Disorders","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115679608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An extract obtained with 60% methanol solution from mate leaves exhibited antioxidant activity of 99.96 ± 1.20% at the level of 2000 g/mL (TBA assay) and of 81.80 ± 0.54% at the level of 125 g/mL (DPPH assay), respectively. In this fraction, five polyphenols, including chlorogenic acids, were identified by HPLC/MS analysis. Methanol extracts from lotus and rhubarb showed potent antioxidant activity of 98.45 ± 0.78% and 83. 93 ± 2.39%, respectively, at the level of 100 L/mL in a malonaldehyde/gas chromatography assay. Analysis of a hexane fraction of lotus and rhubarb identified several volatile antioxidants, such as 1-octen-3-ol and benzaldehyde. The results of the present study demonstrate that mate, lotus and rhubarb are excellent natural sources of antioxidants.","PeriodicalId":417095,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Food and Nutritional Disorders","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130911199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Iodine deficiency disorders are one of the common preventable human health problems. Fruits and vegetables are usually poor sources of iodine; however, plants can accumulate iodine if it is either present or exogenously administered to the soil. The bio fortification of crops with iodine has therefore been proposed as a strategy for improving human nutrition. Producing iodine enriched crops through bio fortification could be an effective way to reduce the deficiency effects. At this time use of iodine organic fertilizer and study of the iodine translocation to different parts of the crop is recommended. In vegetables tomato, cabbage, lettuce, carrot and potato can be used for the bio fortification purpose. This review is conducted to find cost effective, easy and sustainable solutions for the government of Afghanistan to overcome the iodine deficiency problem throughout the country.","PeriodicalId":417095,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Food and Nutritional Disorders","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116511791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we compared the overall rating of each enteral nutrient with respect to form and examined the factors that influence their overall evaluation. Methods: Sensory tests were conducted on 261 pharmaceutical students using the Sematic Differential method. Comparison of comprehensive evaluations for each form of enteral nutrient was carried out for liquids (room temperature, warm, cold), jelly (solid), and mousse (semi-solid) forms. Additionally, factors influencing the comprehensive evaluation of enteral nutrients were investigated using covariance structure analysis. Results: Overall evaluation of each enteral nutrient form showed the jelly was rated highest (2.57 ± 1.49), followed by the warm liquid (2.53 ± 1.29), cold liquid (2.42 ± 1.20), room temperature liquid (2.26 ± 1.20), and the mousse (1.93 ± 1.07). From the result of factor analysis, four factors (flavor, richness, presence, and texture) were extracted. Covariance structure analysis of factors affecting the overall rating revealed that flavor had a significant influence (fitness index: GFI=0.908, AGFI=0.878, RMSEA=0.074, AIC=912.742). Conclusion: Differences in the form of enteral nutrients affected the overall satisfaction of patients. It is important for medical staff, including pharmacists, to deepen their understanding of factors related to the overall rating of enteral nutrients in order to meet the needs of patients.","PeriodicalId":417095,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Food and Nutritional Disorders","volume":"38 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114113821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study adopted a cross-sectional survey using self-administered questionnaires in a local event named Farm Fest 2016. Data were collected from consumers aged 18 or above who bought organic foods in the past six months. Regression analysis was used to identify drivers of purchasing behavior that induced more consumption of organic foods by comparing purchase frequencies of heavy with light consumers. The odds ratios of taste, respondents’ friends in consuming organic foods, and convenient points of sale for the heavy consumers were 1.628, 1.727 and 1.68 times more than those of the light consumers respectively. Emotions in terms of fear, guilt, and empathy explained 33.6% variance between the heavy and the light organic consumers. Price perception, environmental consideration, animal wellbeing, and green behavior were found not significant in predicting organic buying frequencies. The perceived quality of organic foods, social norms, the number of distribution channels, and emotions were significant predictors of heavy consumers of organic foods.","PeriodicalId":417095,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Food and Nutritional Disorders","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125672206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Purpose: The investigation of the impact of nutritional behavior on the craniofacial morphology, the masticatory function and dentition, as well as the research for possible correlation between body mass index (BMI) and harmonic function of stomatognathic system. Methods: A comprehensive review of the dental and medical literature, using appropriate keywords. Results: Several studies support the hypothesis according to which nutritional behavior has an impact on the development and formulation of the stomatognathic system, but also teeth wear. It is also supported that there is negative relationship between masticatory performance and BMI. Furthermore, the factors which affect the masticatory performance are referred, such as age, gender, height, physical activity, smoking, face shape, sleep bruxism, oral health, number, position and dentition. Conclusions: SS is highly reliant on nutritional behavior, therefore the collaboration between oral health doctors and nutritionists is considered essential for the methodical prevention programs training, in order to eliminate the disorders of stomatognathic system and for the general health but also to eliminate deviations from ideal weight and improve the quality of life in general.","PeriodicalId":417095,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Food and Nutritional Disorders","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116377850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The epidemiology of picky eating is challenging to account for, because there is no universally approved definition. However in 2015, a study conducted in the Netherlands involving 4,018 individuals revealed the prevalence of picky eating was 26.5% at 18 months old, 27.6% at 3 years old, and it has been decreased to 13.2% at 6 years old. The concluding data of that study stated that picky eating is commonly a temporary behavioral trait that is normal in preschool children.
