We propose to extend the system the way that it would not only detect the gunshots, but it would identify a suspects gun/pistol type as well. Such extension could help the investigation process and the suspect identification. The proposed extension provides a new functionality of the gun type recognition (classification) based on audio recordings captured. This research topic is discussed in other research papers marginally. Different kinds of features were extracted for this challenging task and feature vectors were reduced by using mutual information based feature selection algorithms. The proposed system uses two phase selection process, HMM (Hidden Markov Model) classification and Viterbi based decoding algorithm. The presented approach reached promising results in the experiments (higher than 80% of ACC and TPR).","PeriodicalId":416816,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF 2015)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125983395","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We collected a ground truth fingerprint skin moisture dataset containing 6600 samples from 33 subjects using 5 optical sensors, two claimed to work well in extreme skin moisture conditions. Controlling conditions by applying cream, alcohol and water we performed objective measurements of skin moisture prior to each fingerprint capture. Analyzing the relationship between measured moisture and biometric performance across five sensors and comparison scores from 3 commercial providers confirms claims to resistance to excessive moisture. Results indicate that sensors resistant to excessive moisture perform worse on dry fingerprints than sensors not resistant to excessive moisture. The collected dataset is made available as an in-house dataset.","PeriodicalId":416816,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF 2015)","volume":"08 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127199486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is considered to be particularly important when the time lapse between gallery and probe samples extends significantly, to more than a few years. Our experiments employ iris aging analysis conducted using three different iris recognition algorithms and a database of 583 samples from 58 irises collected up to nine years apart. To determine the degradation rates of similarity scores with extending time lapse and also in relation to multiple image quality and geometrical factors of sample images, a linear regression analysis was performed. 29 regression models have been tested with both the time parameter and geometrical factors being statistically significant in every model. Quality measures that showed statistically significant influence on the predicted variable were, depending on the method, image sharpness and local contrast or their mutual relations. To our best knowledge, this is the first paper describing aging analysis using multiple regression models with data covering such a wide time period. Results presented suggest that template aging effect occurs in iris biometrics to a statistically significant extent. Image quality and geometrical factors may contribute to the degradation of similarity score. However, the estimate of time parameter showed statistical significance and similar value in each of the tested models. This reveals that the aging phenomenon may as well be unrelated to quality and geometrical measures of the image.","PeriodicalId":416816,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF 2015)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127037275","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While they can still use the static image of the signature, it has been proven that the dynamic information contains very discriminative information. This paper is focused on dynamic signature recognition applied to forensic scenarios. An automatic featured-based or global recognition system is considered as some of the features extracted by these systems could be used by FDE in their work. A system comprised of 117 global features is proposed and evaluated with BioSecure DS2 database. A subset of 40 features is selected by SFFS algorithm as the optimal feature vector in the development phase. Results of 10.6% EER are achieved for skilled forgeries which improve previous results using similar approaches. In addition, a set of selected features have been analysed statistically for genuine and forged signatures in order to obtain useful information that could be used by forensic experts in their reports.","PeriodicalId":416816,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF 2015)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129366665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It can be easily obtained with existing face and iris setups, and it appears in iris images, so its fusion with the iris texture has a potential to improve the overall recognition. It is also suggested that iris is more suited to near-infrared (NIR) illumination, whereas the periocular modality is best for visible (VW) illumination. Here, we evaluate three periocular and three iris matchers based on different features. As experimental data, we use five databases, three acquired with a close-up NIR camera, and two in VW light with a webcam and a digital camera. We observe that the iris matchers perform better than the periocular matchers with NIR data, and the opposite with VW data. However, in both cases, their fusion can provide additional performance improvements. This is specially relevant with VW data, where the iris matchers perform significantly worse (due to low resolution), but they are still able to complement the periocular modality.","PeriodicalId":416816,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF 2015)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127109379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is especially useful for a common situation in forensic search where faces of low resolution, e.g. on surveillance footage or in a crowd, must be compared to a high-resolution reference. This method is based on the likelihood ratio of a pair of mixed-resolution input images. The effectiveness of our method is tested on the SCface database which contains face images taken by surveillance cameras. The MDS problem is formulated as maximization of a correntropy criterion, which is solved by half-quadratic optimization in a multiplicative formulation. By doing so, theMDS copes with an initial dissimilarity matrix contaminated with outliers, because the correntropy criterion is closely related to the Welsch M-estimator. The proposed algorithm is coined as Multiplicative Half-Quadratic MDS (MHQMDS). Its performance is assessed for potential functions associated to various M-estimators have been tested. Three state-of-the-art MDS techniques, namely the Scaling by Majorizing a Complicated Function (SMACOF), the Robust Euclidean Embedding (REE), and the Robust MDS (RMDS), are implemented under the same conditions. The experimental results indicate that the MHQMDS, outperforms the aforementioned state-of-the-art competing techniques.","PeriodicalId":416816,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF 2015)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129871287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we investigate human performance on an eyebrow verification task. This task is executed twice by participants: a \"best-effort\" approach and an approach using features based on forensic knowledge. The group of participants is divided into forensic/biometric experts and non-experts. The rationale behind this experiment is to determine whether there exist differences between (a) experts and non-experts and (b) the \"best-effort\" and forensic approach. It is shown empirically on a special constructed dataset that there do not exist major differences between experts and non-experts, however non-experts do perform worse when using the forensic approach instead of the \"best-effort\" approach.","PeriodicalId":416816,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF 2015)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125303951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The captured faces are typically non-frontal, partially occluded and of a low resolution, which makes the recognition task extremely difficult. In this paper we try to address this problem by presenting a novel framework for face recognition that combines diverse features sets (Gabor features, local binary patterns, local phase quantization features and pixel intensities), probabilistic linear discriminant analysis (PLDA) and data fusion based on linear logistic regression. With the proposed framework a matching score for the given pair of probe and target images is produced by applying PLDA on each of the four feature sets independently - producing a (partial) matching score for each of the PLDA-based feature vectors - and then combining the partial matching results at the score level to generate a single matching score for recognition. We make two main contributions in the paper: i) we introduce a novel framework for face recognition that relies on probabilistic MOdels of Diverse fEature SeTs (MODEST) to facilitate the recognition process and ii) benchmark it against the existing state-of-the-art. We demonstrate the feasibility of our MODEST framework on the FRGCv2 and PaSC databases and present comparative results with the state-of-the-art recognition techniques, which demonstrate the efficacy of our framework.","PeriodicalId":416816,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF 2015)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134012425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While this approach was able to provide an objective performance measure for the first time, the robustness of the scheme towards different contextual conditions is barely known. Also, StirTrace has recently been adapted from the well-known StirMark framework to the benchmarking of latent fingerprints. In this paper, the image manipulation techniques of StirTrace are transferred to the age estimation challenge and estimation performance is benchmarked for 500 short-term aging time series under varying contextual conditions. Results show that time series preprocessing is sensitive to pixel-depth reduction as well as different types of noise. Furthermore, a decreased image size has a stronger impact on the age estimation performance than a decreased resolution. The addition of texture for substrate simulation and median cut filtering for smudged print simulation are found to not be optimal in the aging context for representing this kind of distortions.","PeriodicalId":416816,"journal":{"name":"3rd International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF 2015)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130789687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
