The technique, commonly known as LADAR or LIDAR, uses an optical range finder to determine relative displacement and velocity. LADAR can also be used to measure the environment, for example atmospheric turbulence or pollution. In addition, smart cameras are emerging, where a conventional 2-D image is supplemented with distance information to give a complete 3-D picture, with applications in autonomous vehicles and collision avoidance systems.","PeriodicalId":416780,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Avionics, Fiber-Optics and Phototonics Technology Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121831763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper shows 100 Mbit/s Ethernet transmission over long distances and transmission experiments of high speed data (1 Gbit/s and more) over intermediate distances (100+ m). Major research activities in terms of data transmission are related to home networking, but consistent part of the results achieved by these projects could be easily and efficiently extended to other promising sectors, such as industrial cabling, avionics, naval cabling, where performances and distances of interest are comparable with the previously mentioned ones.","PeriodicalId":416780,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Avionics, Fiber-Optics and Phototonics Technology Conference","volume":"5 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120987703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Todays jet engine sensors are expensvie, have high temperature and harsh environment limitations, are bulky, heavy in weight, complex and time consuming to install. Other sensor concerns are electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic pulse generators (EMP). Today a number of advanced aircraft support fiber optic backbone architecture for on-board communications. This paper will discuss jet engine hardware, potential fiber optic sensor application opportunities, fiber optic sensor benefits and and challenges. The paper will conclude with a fiber optic sensor application prediction.","PeriodicalId":416780,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Avionics, Fiber-Optics and Phototonics Technology Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121303078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The power budget of an amplified CWDM network employing splitters and a wavelength filter has been evaluated. It has been shown that on larger networks, with high sources of loss, an SOA can be employed to benefit the system performance. The positioning of the SOA is important, as greater system margins can be achieved using SOAs with higher gains further from the transmitter.","PeriodicalId":416780,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Avionics, Fiber-Optics and Phototonics Technology Conference","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116009861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Individual component testing is an important first step to achieving a viable system but sub-system testing can provide a more complete understanding of whether the system requirements can be met before full qualification is undertaken. This is particularly true for multi-mode links where redistribution of the optical modes within the fibre can have significant effects on a component performance. At BAE Systems we have assembled an Optical Component and System Assessment Rig (OSCAR) to enable sub-system evaluations. Here the principles and features of OSCAR are described together with examples of results.","PeriodicalId":416780,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Avionics, Fiber-Optics and Phototonics Technology Conference","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133987138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research in low SWAP/Cost components is a relatively new field in RF photonics (previous work targets high-end performance, mainly centered on achieving high SFDR but at high SWAP/cost). The measured performance would support typical antenna remoting or RF signal distribution applications. The clearest applications are those requiring extreme isolation, low-phase noise, compact size, low power consumption, multiple-independent channels and/or flexible cabling. These applications arise in both military and commercial markets. We specifically examined the RF transmission needs for GPS user-equipment (UE) and identified the benefits from the use of VCSEL-based RF links.","PeriodicalId":416780,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Avionics, Fiber-Optics and Phototonics Technology Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130021311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
