However,\u0000around two decades ago, a pioneering research team noticed that these\u0000indexes did not completely resolve their open questions. Thus, they\u0000suggested changing the way biodiversity was measured. At its base,\u0000this new methodology considers the distance between species\u0000(in phylogenetic or functional terms) before subsequently applying the\u0000appropriate biodiversity indexes. Including phylogenetic and\u0000functional elements in the evaluation of diversity allows us to\u0000approach the concept of biodiversity in a more comprehensive\u0000way.

Because of the\u0000extreme environmental conditions of the Antarctic continental shelf –\u0000its distance from other continents, depth, and the weight of the\u0000continental ice – it offers us a great opportunity to better\u0000understand how a pristine ecosystem would normally be. In addition to\u0000a high level of biodiversity, Antarctic benthic organisms present\u0000patterns of demographic and spatial distribution that are different\u0000from the communities of the continental platforms in other seas and\u0000oceans of the world. This makes Antarctic benthic communities look,\u0000more than one might think, like the communities with the highest known\u0000biodiversity in the world.

These differences\u0000often respond to gradients in one or several factors which create\u0000biodiversity patterns in space and are scale-dependent. At a local\u0000scale, diversity patterns depend on the habitat size (species-area\u0000relationship), the productivity, the environmental harshness, the\u0000frequency and intensity of disturbance, or the regional species\u0000pool. Regional diversity may be influenced by environmental\u0000heterogeneity (increasing dissimilarity), although it could act also\u0000at smaller or larger spatial scales, and the connectivity among\u0000habitats. Finally, at a global scale, diversity patterns are found\u0000with the latitude, the altitude or the depth, although these factors\u0000are surrogates or one or several environmental variables\u0000(productivity, area, isolation, or\u0000harshness).

We perfectly understand what it means to be able to focus our scientific perspective on a problem: we want to understand it reasonably, according to the observation, and different observers will obtain an equivalent result. More and more fields of knowledge are diving into scientific analysis. Experimental sciences are based on it, but other fields of knowledge have also found themselves needing it in order to gain social acceptance and recognised explanatory possibilities. However, this apparent transgression is now\u0000considered essential and even advantageous for the construction of\u0000knowledge. The terminology of specialised knowledge, like that from\u0000the field of biotechnology, undoubtedly contains metaphors. In the\u0000discourse related to scientific dissemination and the mass media, the\u0000use of metaphors is more original which makes them more attractive as\u0000strategies to increase the intelligibility of concepts and to\u0000stimulate layperson audiences. It was proposed by William Hodge in 1950 and is currently a stimulus for the development of several theories based on geometry, analysis, and mathematical physics. It proposes a natural condition for the existence of complex submanifolds within a complex manifold. Manifolds are the spaces in which geometric objects can be considered. In complex manifolds, the structure of the space is based on complex numbers, instead of the most intuitive structure of geometry, based on real numbers.
