The incidence of this zoonotic malaria in South-east Asian rural communities continues to increase annually, despite efforts and guidelines for malaria control. To address this gap, a One Health project, supported by various stakeholders, was conducted from January to August 2022 to integrate community perspectives and address challenges to malaria prevention. The project implemented a photovoice initiative in collaboration with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, international malaria experts, the Sabah State Health Department, and primary healthcare workers in four rural villages in Sabah, Malaysia. The study recruited 26 adult participants of both genders to explore their perceptions of malaria, prevention challenges, and the significance of innovative community engagement methods. Cultural and social norms, environmental factors, social disparity, and socio-economic status influenced the identified challenges. The project findings were shared with stakeholders and policy makers through photo exhibitions, newspaper articles, academic manuscripts, reports, and conferences and helped initiate further dialogues with policy makers and stakeholders. The transdisciplinary photovoice approach showcased the impact of collaborative efforts with rural communities in shedding light on critical issues related to malaria prevention. Future recommendations propose co-designing interventions for the target population and bridging the gap through a One Health initiative that integrates community perspectives and is supported by multiple stakeholders in addressing the challenges of malaria prevention.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 © The Authors 2023\u0000

Through discussions with the meat inspectors and other slaughterhouse actors, an electronic meat inspection form was developed, tested, and used in two slaughterhouses in Bungoma County. The meat inspectors completed and submitted a form for every animal slaughtered at their facility over a 2.75-year period. In a feedback meeting with the meat inspectors and other stakeholders, areas for improvement were highlighted, such as the timely provision of feedback to the data providers, and the inclusion of data fields that allow for more detailed animal movement information. The meat inspectors remarked that the form made them feel appreciated and added value to their work as the data could be used to educate farmers on prevailing livestock conditions and provide economic incentives for disease control interventions. The data submitted via the electronic forms were of sufficient quality to be summarized and identify trends in the animal slaughterhouse throughput, as well as frequent reasons for meat condemnation and associated costs. These data could therefore set the foundation for a syndromic surveillance system based on slaughterhouse data. Other non-traditional data sources, such as livestock and meat transport certificates, could also be leveraged to create a post-farm animal health information system.\u0000 \u0000 \u0000 © The Authors 2023\u0000

The collaborative, multisectoral, transdisciplinary and systems-focused nature of One Health allows it to make important contributions to these problems by, for example, mitigating disease across animal and human populations or reducing antimicrobial resistance. In this case study, we explore how the combination of food systems literacy and One Health skills can give postgraduate students a valuable foundation to engage in further opportunities for One Health in food systems and thereby contribute to positive change. Areas for potential expansion of One Health in food systems are presented. The example of the Interdisciplinary Food Systems Teaching and Learning (IFSTAL) programme and the MSc course One Health: ecosystems, humans and animals are used to discuss the value of the combination of One Health and food systems skills.\u0000 © The Authors 2023
