Like any other medical specialty, rheumatology is not exempt. Although the problem is imprecisely quantified, according to some authors it affects up to 10% of hospitalised patients. Describing and qualifying misdiagnoses in rheumatology will help us to understand and reduce these. Further, misdiagnosis generates unjustified costs and medico-legal consequences with errors in initial diagnosis the basis for medico-legal disputes involving assessment of work incapacity.","PeriodicalId":415754,"journal":{"name":"The Medico-legal journal","volume":"1 3","pages":"258172241235016"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140963334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary outcomes of this cross-sectional survey were to assess awareness of legislation governing these products among UK police officers and whether they had received appropriate training. 200 police officers completed the survey, and 57 (28.5%) respondents did not know these products were legal on prescription in the UK. 177 (88.5%) police officers believed they would benefit from more training on them and how to identify legal medical cannabis patients. Education on the legalities of cannabis-based products for medicinal use and why they are prescribed is necessary to improve knowledge among police officers.","PeriodicalId":415754,"journal":{"name":"The Medico-legal journal","volume":"56 45","pages":"258172241237650"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140965736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They may range from minor bruises and contusions to deep extensive injuries caused by biting, kicking or trampling, etc. The scenario differs from animal to animal and between species; by comparing the pattern of injuries it may be possible to work out the animal involved. We present a case where a story of an animal attack was conceived for monetary benefits. Determining the circumstances surrounding death may not be possible in all post-mortem cases but a medical examiner should strive to elicit as much information as possible from the dead body.","PeriodicalId":415754,"journal":{"name":"The Medico-legal journal","volume":"74 5","pages":"258172241238079"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140964344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The deceased was a 32-year-old man. At lunchtime his symptoms of unease, giddiness and unconsciousness began and within 45 minutes he arrived at the hospital. His vitals could not be recorded in the emergency department, and after CPR, he was pronounced dead. At autopsy, an isolated right atrial rupture, without any disease of the heart wall, was discovered. The right atrium has the weakest wall and is frequently the site of spontaneous rupture brought on by increased intraluminal pressure. Both liquid blood and clotted blood were found in the pericardial cavity. Low atrial pressure encourages clot formation because it causes considerably slower blood entry into the pericardium at the time of atrial rupture compared with entry at the time of ventricular rupture. Evidence of chronic lung disease was found which explains the raised intraluminal pressure of the heart chambers. Even with no history of trauma or myocardial infarction, the Beck triad - an engorged neck vein, a muffled heart sound, and low blood pressure - should alert the emergency room staff to the possibility of cardiac tamponade because, in a very unlikely scenario, spontaneous cardial wall rupture might occur.","PeriodicalId":415754,"journal":{"name":"The Medico-legal journal","volume":"44 1","pages":"258172231225915"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140699403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The iris colour, retinal scans and other biometric features may be used for identification purposes while visual impairments may have legal implications in employment, driving and accidents. Ocular manifestations provide clues regarding substance abuse, poisoning and toxicity, and evidence of trauma, abuse or disease can be revealed along with psychological traits and lifestyle. Thus, the eye is a valuable tool in forensic investigations of living subjects, providing identifying characteristics along with health information. This review focuses on the medico-legal aspects of the eye's contribution when the living are subjected to forensic examination.","PeriodicalId":415754,"journal":{"name":"The Medico-legal journal","volume":"28 10","pages":"258172241228812"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140702112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a known fact that anthropometric assessment can have population-specific variations. The present autopsy study was conducted on the sterna of 102 cadavers (52 males and 50 females) of age more than 25 years at a tertiary care centre in Central India. Anthropometric measurements included the length of the manubrium (M), mesosternum (B) and combined length of manubrium and mesosternum (CL). Applicability of Hyrtl's law, Ashley's rule and the sternal index were also assessed for sex determination. A statistically significant correlation (p < 0.001) was observed between sternal measurements and the sex of the study population. The highest coefficient of correlation was seen between sex and the combined length (r = 0.726), followed by mesosternal length (r = 0.620), and manubrial length (r = 0.509). The difference between the means of the sternal index in males and females was not statistically significant (p > 0.05), and the difference between the means of the ratio of the body with manubrium in males and females for Hyrtl's law is also not found to be statistically significant (p > 0.05). It is concluded that the length of the body and the combined length of manubrium and mesosternum are valuable criteria for sexing the sternum in an adult population of Central India. The sternum can be useful for sex determination, particularly when bones like skull, pelvis, or long bones are not available or fragmented.","PeriodicalId":415754,"journal":{"name":"The Medico-legal journal","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134510054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
