Rivenc","doi":"10.1086/697389","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1086/697389","url":null,"abstract":"This essay addresses the question of documenting, collecting, and conserving performance art, an increasingly important, yet highly debated topic in the fields of art history and conservation. Using two works by Carolee Schneemann, Chromelodeon (1963) and Up to and Including Her Limits (1974–76), the essay will examine the various material traces that constitute the afterlife of her ephemeral work and highlight the preparation, documentation, and archiving strategies employed by this seminal feminist performance artist. It will foreground the importance of artifacts such as notes, scores, scripts, drawings, negatives, or photographs, which often provide the only means by which time-based art can be examined retrospectively. This process and its material manifestations will be approached from both an art-historical as well as conservation perspective, which will embed it into a larger context of questions that occur around the practice of studying, collecting, and exhibiting of ephemeral works.","PeriodicalId":41510,"journal":{"name":"Getty Research Journal","volume":"10 1","pages":"167 - 189"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1086/697389","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41488688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study uses the media studies concept of remediation to develop a taxonomy of non-ink media ranging from late nineteenth-century pictorialist photography to new digital media of popular culture. Chinese ink art has become a successful phenomenon in the global contemporary art market in the past decade, but the protagonists of this movement, including many ink remediators, stand in a much longer transnational modern Asian development of strengthening, expanding, and transforming the beauty of monochromatic ink painting in other media. This study investigates works that deal with themes of Japanese ink aesthetics in non-ink media by artists in Japan and the United States ranging from the calligrapher Inoue Yūichi to the photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto.","PeriodicalId":41510,"journal":{"name":"Getty Research Journal","volume":"10 1","pages":"121 - 148"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1086/697387","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46219025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The unusual object, hitherto identified as the early Christian child martyr Saint Cyricus, bears marks which indicate that it is in fact the only known marble portrait of Simon of Trent, a two-year-old Christian boy whose dead body was found on Easter 1475 in a sewer underneath a Jewish family’s house in Trent, Italy. What followed is known as one of the most appalling blood libels against Jews in Early Modern Europe. The incident set in motion an unprecedented visual and written propaganda campaign, which, with the help of the printing press, quickly established a major cult around the alleged child “martyr.” The Getty bust, a portrait of the dead child in the pose of a martyr, must have played a significant role in Simon’s quickly spreading cult in late fifteenth-century Europe.","PeriodicalId":41510,"journal":{"name":"Getty Research Journal","volume":"10 1","pages":"37 - 60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1086/697383","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44318901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These surveys were the first that aimed at narrating a world history of architecture. While today the canonical images and histories in architectural surveys are regarded as clichés that confirm dominant values and established practices, this essay argues that at the time of its invention it was a critical and dynamic genre. Conscious of the pioneering nature of their books, Fergusson, Lübke, and Kugler accounted extensively for their aims and methods. All too soon, however, the genre of the architectural history survey text became a victim of its own success. The critical nature of the survey’s origin was put to an end by its spectacular succession of reeditions in the subsequent decades.","PeriodicalId":41510,"journal":{"name":"Getty Research Journal","volume":"10 1","pages":"105 - 120"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1086/697386","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47278382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gottschaller","doi":"10.1086/697388","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1086/697388","url":null,"abstract":"This essay discusses the development of abstract painting in the twentieth century through the lens of artistic process. Before the invention of pressure-sensitive tape in the United States in the 1930s, abstract painters were limited to creating the straight edges of geometric forms by either applying paint freehand or by using tools such as straightedges and ruling pens. But whether abstract artists embraced the use of such aids, which resulted in a more industrial aesthetic, depended initially on whether they considered their artworks agents of spiritual cognition, as Wassily Kandinsky did, or agents of social transformation, as Aleksandr Rodchenko maintained. After tape became more widely available in the late 1940s, Piet Mondrian and Barnett Newman incorporated it into their respective repertoires. While Mondrian never used tape for painting his bands, Newman developed such a mastery of applications that he effectively voided the dichotomy of earlier ideological debates. The essay also addresses technical issues in the work of Paul Klee, Josef Albers, Harry Holtzman, Burgoyne Diller, Mark Rothko, Bridget Riley, Jo Baer, Agnes Martin, and Richard Lin.","PeriodicalId":41510,"journal":{"name":"Getty Research Journal","volume":"10 1","pages":"149 - 166"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1086/697388","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43481538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They fulfill three complementary functions: The first sketchbook, signed in 1742, represents a unique document from his stay in Rome, containing the artist’s pensamentos (thoughts, or ideas for original compositions) as well as autobiographical notes and theoretical considerations reflecting his training as an artist under his teachers Marco Benefial and Agostino Masucci. The second one more closely resembles other sketchbooks in the GRI’s collections and includes practical knowledge and drawings of views and landscapes, in which Glama also includes interesting information on paintings by Benefial. The third sketchbook is the most personal one and is reserved for spontaneous sketches related predominantly to his life in Portugal. This study focuses on Glama’s process of training and his unusual position between two caposcuole.","PeriodicalId":41510,"journal":{"name":"Getty Research Journal","volume":"10 1","pages":"83 - 104"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1086/697385","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48624886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Paul Getty Museum. This anthropomorphic alabaster scent bottle, which is dated to ca. 575–550 BCE and thought to have been made in Naucratis in Egypt, is presented as a Greek artifact in the Getty Villa’s permanent exhibition. This paper challenges this description and argues instead that the vessel is better understood as a cultural hybrid. We suggest that, by merging Egyptian, Phoenician, Greek, and/or Cypriot influences into a single object, the artists that created such interesting vessels were catering to a surprisingly international market. Thus, objects such as the Getty alabastron can be understood as emblems for an increasingly connected world and as symbols of the eclectic nature of Classical Greek culture.","PeriodicalId":41510,"journal":{"name":"Getty Research Journal","volume":"10 1","pages":"1 - 16"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1086/697381","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46780580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
