{"title":"Navigating the Digital Divide in India: A Comprehensive Guide","authors":"Ashwani Dubey, Anushka Sinha, Aditya Raj","doi":"10.18510/hssr.2024.1223","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18510/hssr.2024.1223","url":null,"abstract":"Purpose of the study: This paper attempts to gain insights into the manner in which the first-level digital divide contributes to the more pervasive second-level divide associated with the manner of and motivation for digital usage across social groups.\u0000Methodology: The study used data from the Government of India’s NSS 75TH round survey (2017-18) on social consumption and education. Binary logistic regression is used as a statistical method that can estimate the probability of an outcome, such as affordability or accessibility, based on one or more predictor variables. \u0000Main Findings: Findings reveal that, for marginalized groups, class location plays an underlying role in propagating the first-level digital divide. Furthermore, when assessing the second-level divide in digital accessibility, socio-cultural factors perpetuate inequalities. The variable of gender shows that improved financial capacity to afford digital devices does not guarantee increased access to digital skills. Gender-based stereotypes act as deterrents, steering women away from engaging with computers.\u0000Applications of this study: The research seeks to highlight digital exclusion among vulnerable communities, aiming to address this gap to fulfill the primary objective of the Sustainable Development Goal \"Leaving No One Behind\" and thereby contribute to the establishment of an equitable society.\u0000Novelty/Originality of this study: Many existing studies rely on outdated data, prompting a need for a fresh perspective using updated datasets. This study seeks to investigate digital disparities within different segments of Indian society, utilizing recent data from a nationally representative survey. Methodology: The research method used in the article is the method of literature analysis and criticism. The following research techniques were used in the study: analysis of domestic and foreign literature on the subject, analysis of source documents (existing sources) - desk research, and inference methods (deduction and induction). Main findings: Creating value for the customer is important in achieving market success for the company. By learning about the needs, expectations, and requirements of customers regarding the products and services offered by the company, the offer can be more precisely tailored to them, which will ultimately contribute to a competitive advantage. Creating value and providing it to customers should therefore be one of the key factors that a company should include in its system of goals to achieve satisfactory financial results. Application of the study: This article shows customer values' importance in formulating company goals. The considerations presented in the study do not exhaust all the issues discussed. The considerations presented will be the basis for further theoretical analyzes and empirical research in this area. Originality/Novelty of the study: The issue of customer value as an important factor related to setting company goals is not new in the literature. {"title":"Implementation of investments resulting from the National Plan for Municipal Wastewater Treatment","authors":"M. Stachowicz","doi":"10.18510/hssr.2023.1161","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18510/hssr.2023.1161","url":null,"abstract":"Purpose of the study: The aim of the paper is to assess the degree of implementation of sewage investments in Poland, resulting from the National Plan for Municipal Wastewater Treatment. NPMWT defined the most important investments that were to bring sewage management to the standards resulting from the Urban Wastewater Directive within the deadline negotiated by Poland in the Accession Treaty. Methodology: The assessment of the implementation of the discussed investments was made on the basis of an analysis of the NPMWT, its last update from 2022 and data from the Central Statistical Office on the condition of sewage infrastructure in Poland. The analysis covered the years 2002-2022 and was of a comparative nature. Main findings: Despite many investments, Poland still does not comply with the EU law. At the end of 2020 in 675 agglomerations with Equivalent Number of Residents ≥ 2000 (44,3% agglomeration in total) the sewage infrastructure was insufficient or the existing collective sewage systems and sewage treatment plants still did not meet the requirements of the Directive. This does not apply to the entire agglomeration, but only means that the assumed indicators of sewage treatment or sewage system have not been achieved in them. Application of the study: The analysis contained in the article may be useful for central and local authorities responsible for investments in local infrastructure and students of faculties related to environmental protection and administration. Originality/Novelty of the study: The subject discussed in the paper concerns important, current issues related to the fulfilment by Poland of the European Union law concerning the standards of urban wastewater treatment. RN.23.108, ID: 108, which is intended to serve as a starting point for further research on circular economy. The aim of the analysis will be to diagnose the “hotspots” so that a proper analysis in the next year of research will allow the author to find targeted solutions and formulate recommendations. Methodology: This article reviews the available literature. Items compatible with the author's research topics have been selected, supplemented with other sources, the most important of which are listed in the bibliography. Therefore, a preliminary analysis of existing data (secondary studies) was used as a method. Main Findings: A preliminary analysis of the indicators allowed us to draw general conclusions. First, it is necessary to further tighten the legal provisions in the field of environmental protection, while at the same time defining the precise timeframe for each of the stages. Secondly, it is necessary to develop the sources of financing for the activities undertaken. Thirdly, there is no chance for change without an increase in consumer environmental awareness. Fourth, you can't make changes and make the right choices in the short term.  Applications of the study: The content of the article may be useful to a wide audience interested in the subject matter being studied. It is also extremely important for the author of the article, as it is a starting point for further scientific research. In addition, the subject matter and information provided will be used at the Jan Kochanowski University during practical meetings/classes with students. Novelty/Originality of the study: In the article, the author emphasized several important elements of an extremely difficult puzzle, which is a well-functioning circular economy system. It focused on several key areas: better use of scarce resources, minimization of waste, reduction of overexploitation of the natural environment. Without such actions, she believes, civilization will move towards self-destruction at an alarmingly fast pace. The writing of the article was undertaken by the authors in October 2021. The purpose of writing the article is to answer the questions: To what extent has the frequency of visits to Podhorce castle, by residents of Lviv region, domestic and foreign tourists, changed? In which tourist base did the changes introduced during the pandemic have the strongest impact on changes in the frequency of visits to Podhorce castle? What limiting factor will most affect changes in the frequency of visits to Podhorce castle at each tourist development base? \u0000Methodology: The research in question used a subjective method. A survey questionnaire created by the author of the article was used as a research tool to collect relevant data. Before starting the survey, each respondent was able to read a brief information about the purpose of the research and the results obtained, which were used exclusively to write the article. Participation in the survey was voluntary. The research used a questionnaire consisting of three substantive parts. \u0000Main conclusions: Residents of the Lviv region significantly reduced their visits to Podhorce castle during the COVID-19 pandemic. Changes made to the transport base during the pandemic had the strongest impact on changes in the frequency of visits to Podhorce castle. Of greatest importance as a limiting factor in the transport base of the city of Podhorce during the pandemic is the poor condition of access roads and the temporary suspension of domestic and foreign transport links. \u0000Application of the study: The research can be used by units organizing and supervising tourist traffic in the Lviv region. The data of the study can serve as a basis for strategic decisions on tourist traffic in emergency situations in the Lviv region. \u0000Originality/Novelty of the study: While writing the article, the author was guided by the timeliness and orginality of the problem. Considerations were focused on discussing the connection between obesity and the risk of cancer of particular organs of the gastrointestinal tract. The aim of the work is to analyze this phenomenon and to show the connection between these two issues. \u0000Methodology: The article was prepared with the use the critical literature review method. Appropriate materials focused on the subject of consideration were searched, among others, in PubMed and specialized literature. \u0000Main conclusions: The analyzes of available materials show that obesity significantly affects the occurrence of gastrointestinal cancers, and also affects the treatment and prognosis of cancer patients. It predisposes not only to gastrointestinal cancers, which are the subject of this article, but also to other cancers, which is worth emphasizing. \u0000Applied studies: The article shows the broad influence of obesity on particular gastrointestinal cancers. The content contained in the article can be useful for doctors to systematize knowledge, but also for patients to make them aware and motivate them to change and a healthier lifestyle. \u0000Originality of research: The report presents medical knowledge in an accessible way, making it easier to assimilate. It allows to understand the problem of obesity and its impact on the incidence of gastrointestinal cancers. Barańska","doi":"10.18510/hssr.2023.1148","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18510/hssr.2023.1148","url":null,"abstract":"Purpose of the study: The aim of the study was to investigate the association between selected components of body mass composition and blood pressure in a group of students at the University of Rzeszów. \u0000Methodology: The article was prepared using the method of critical literature review and statistical study of selected components of body mass composition and blood pressure in a group of students at the University of Rzeszów. \u0000Main findings: The study showed that the prevalence of overweight and obesity based on BMI and FAT% in the study group of students was low. BMI values indicated that only 27 subjects, representing 19.57% of the study group, were overweight. The mean arterial pressure in the women was within the normal range, indicating that there were no significant problems of hypertensive disease in this group. on the other hand, among the male representatives, the mean arterial pressure was above the normal values. On the basis of the study, it can be seen that there is a correlation in the prevalence of overweight among adults in rural areas, where 17 people (12.32% of all subjects) were overweight. The present study showed a trend in the prevalence of high blood pressure among men from rural areas (135/76 mmHg) and from urban areas with less than 20,000 inhabitants (137/75 mmHg). Excess body weight and percentage of body fat showed no association with the prevalence of hypertension in the study group. \u0000Application of the study: The presented article refers to the selected components of body mass composition and blood pressure in a group of students at the University of Rzeszów. The tool used will make it possible to analyse the problem and to find probably non-positive changes affecting their health. The content can be used by PhD students to make people aware of this existing problem. \u0000Originality/Novelty of the study: Selected components of body mass composition versus blood pressure is a new issue that is gaining popularity over time. It is noteworthy that although it is known, but few people know about the exact consequences of an abnormal component on blood pressure and health. By analyzing the algorithms utilized in the Panek Carsharing 2.0 platform, the study seeks to provide insights into their effectiveness in improving service quality, optimizing resource utilization, and meeting customer demands. The research objective also includes identifying potential areas for further algorithmic improvements to enhance the overall performance and sustainability of car-sharing services. \u0000Methodology: The paper was prepared with the use of the critical literature review method mainly in the field of sharing economy. In this method, the researchers examined academic and professional literature, articles, publications, and relevant documents related to car-sharing services and algorithmic implementations in the sharing economy sector. These sources served as valuable references to analyze and assess the role of algorithms in the context of the Panek Carsharing 2.0 platform and its impact on service efficiency and customer satisfaction. \u0000Main conclusions: The identified algorithms play a crucial role in the efficient functioning of car-sharing services. Vision algorithms are particularly important in monitoring vehicles, verifying users, managing the rental and return process, and ensuring safety. The designed and developed product, a complete system platform for carsharing service management, has been partially commercialized and deployed in the Panek CarSharing 2.0 service, which was launched on April 4, 2023. The investor and main recipient of the system continue to work on system development and the final implementation of the production version of modules that are still under development. The completion of work and full commercialization of the product, either as a complete system or individual modules, is planned for mid-2024. \u0000Application of the study: The findings of this study have practical implications for the carsharing industry and its stakeholders. Carsharing service providers can benefit from the insights gained in this study to improve their operational efficiency, enhance user experience, and optimize their service offerings. The study's analysis of the algorithms supporting the Panek Carsharing 2.0 platform can serve as a guide for other carsharing providers in developing and implementing similar technological solutions. \u0000Originality/Novelty of the study: This study focuses on the algorithms supporting the Panek Carsharing 2.0 platform, which is an innovative and advanced carsharing solution.
