This paper investigates the potential of incorporating electric vehicles (EVs) in a low voltage distribution network with high penetration of photovoltaic installations (PVs), and focuses on analysing potential voltage support functions from EVs and PVs. In addition, the paper evaluates the benefits that reactive power control may provide with addressing the issues regarding voltage control at the expense of increased loading. Analysed real Danish low voltage network has been modelled in Matlab SimPowerSystems and is based on consumption and PV production data measured individually for number of households.","PeriodicalId":414838,"journal":{"name":"2014 49th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134241385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solar Energy is one of the favorable renewable energy resources and the multilevel inverter has been proven to be one of the important enabling technologies in photovoltaic (PV) utilization. This paper proposes a three phase nine levels NPC grid connected photovoltaic inverter topology with a multicarrier dual reference pulse-width modulated (PWM) control scheme. Eight carrier waves of the same frequency and different amplitudes are compared with two references (a sine wave and its opposite) for generating the control signals of the switches. Some DC/DC boost converters are used to amplify the voltage produced by the photovoltaic generators. Each of these converters is controlled by an MPPT algorithm in order to track the maximum power point of the GPV. Results of simulation in Matlab environment are given and discussed.","PeriodicalId":414838,"journal":{"name":"2014 49th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130294089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Simulations are carried out using the well-known software package ATP-EMTP and results of the induced voltages on the metallic pipeline are presented for several operating conditions and configurations. Results show that the induced voltages significantly depend on the cable configuration, whereas high and hazardous voltage levels may be arise as the asymmetry in the cable flowing currents increases with the worst case being the single-phase to ground fault.","PeriodicalId":414838,"journal":{"name":"2014 49th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114209762","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Charging the EVs will increase the electricity demand and may cause new peaks. However, the nature of this new type of load offers flexibility that can be used to achieve a variety of goals, including a reduction of the charging impact or cost. The objective of this paper is to present a control algorithm that can be utilized by a commercial building manager for scheduling and managing the EV charging demand. The control algorithm uses Vehicle-to-Building (V2B) interactions to either reduce the building's peak demand, or reduce the daily electricity cost for the building manager. Based on real data from the National Travel Survey of 2010, a realistic EV fleet is assumed, and the effectiveness of the algorithm is examined for different charging/discharging rates and V2B levels.","PeriodicalId":414838,"journal":{"name":"2014 49th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134365458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose a simplified test system called N5area, reflecting the key voltage collapse characteristics of NORDIC32 is proposed. Applying control algorithms is much easier in N5area than in NORDIC32. Load recovery and generator excitation current limiter actions which are two important factors contributing to long-term voltage collapse are considered. Dynamic simulation results for a specified long-term voltage instability scenario are explained and discussed. The effect of generator current limiters is analyzed using PV curves. Furthermore, two different control strategies for controlling the shunt capacitors are applied as countermeasures to save the system. The two strategies are explained and compared and it is shown that control using the voltage at neighboring buses gives better performance.","PeriodicalId":414838,"journal":{"name":"2014 49th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131458089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Politehnica University of Bucharest has a unique profile in the engineering higher education landscape by including among its 14 Faculties, one dedicated to Power Engineering and another one to Electrical Engineering. In this paper we focus on the smart grids topics that the students enrolled in non-power engineering programs are exposed to. We believe that these courses reflect in a high degree the smart grids philosophy, seen as a mix of communication, power transfer and information processing layers. In this paper, several courses outlines are presented as an example of developing the missing link between equipment providers and the grid stakeholders (customers, network operators and energy providers).","PeriodicalId":414838,"journal":{"name":"2014 49th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134320326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distributed generation (DG) using clean and renewable energy in power supply system have attracted serious attention. Many developing countries are adopting distributed generation (DG) technologies for their power systems expansion planning. Solar Energy is one of the most promising, nonpolluting, free source of energy. Libya is a developing country located in North Africa, most of the country's land area is desert which is wealthy in solar radiation income, found to be one of the most reliable and consistent solar energy resources. Despite of this energy resource this area (southern part) of Libya experiences permanent outages which may last for days in certain occasions. This paper investigates the implementation of distributed generation using solar energy resource to improve security of supply to these areas and emphasizes other benefits on power quality and economics.","PeriodicalId":414838,"journal":{"name":"2014 49th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133661572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This provides distributed storage for both the consumer and the local utility. This storage is monitored by the utility through their sub-stations and can be used to support the network when required. This DC micro-grid incorporates a low voltage DC network within the property, providing supplies for lighting and information technology devices. The battery system is charged either through the solar PV or the public supply. AC supplies are also derived from the storage system providing improved quality of supply and cost benefits for the customer through better use of the PV generated power and “moving the time of supply use”. This development allowed a number of conventional protocols, both open and proprietary, to be written. Optimised communication and implementation techniques are sought by academia. This motivation has resulted in university projects, such as The OpenPMU project. The aim is to create a completely open source system that will be cost efficient, reliable, modular and platform independent. The discussed work is focused on the detailed description of a data interface XML based communication tool. The outlined schema is used to exchange data between the acquisition system and the phase estimation algorithm of a PMU. Its many advantages establish it as a flexible schema for transmitting sampled data irrespective of hardware or software implementation. The OpenPMU system is based on hardware implementations that use freely available DAQ devices and aim to develop a low cost alternative to commercial PMU's. The hardware described in this paper is based on a National Instruments field programmable gate array (FPGA) reconfigurable controller (cRIO) that due to its parallel nature can perform different processing operations at the same time. This results in higher speed and accuracy and should provide the benchmark for testing various existing and future OpenPMU implementations.","PeriodicalId":414838,"journal":{"name":"2014 49th International Universities Power Engineering Conference (UPEC)","volume":"141 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133363282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
