The blade rows interaction between front and rear rotors should be taken into account in pump design for stable operation and reduction of unsteady losses. The measurements of static pressure distributions on casing wall with the phase locked sampling method are carried out for two types of the rear rotors. In the present paper the difference of the rear blade interaction and the unsteady pressure fluctuation are clarified. The pressure fluctuations are more remarkable in the front rotor than in the rear rotor and they are caused by rear rotor pressure field. The effects of pressure fluctuations will be discussed in more details toward understanding the blade rows interaction in the contra-rotating axial flow pump.","PeriodicalId":414195,"journal":{"name":"Jsme International Journal Series B-fluids and Thermal Engineering","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124685938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cooling the gas-liquid interface by water evaporation generated the convective layer. Velocity and temperature fluctuations were simultaneously measured by a laser-Doppler velocimeter and a fine thermocouple. Variances and correlations for the fluctuations were normalized by the heat flux and the thickness of the convective layer, and vertical profiles of those quantities were obtained. Their profiles were compared with those in convection over a solid wall. They had striking differences near the surface, and showed almost the same behavior in the remaining convective layer. From the profile of kurutosis, the velocity fluctuation was expected to become a Gaussin distribution in a region from near the surface to the midst of the convective layer. On the other hand, the distribution of the temperature fluctuation had two peaks near the surface, and wasn’t Gaussin in entire convective layer.","PeriodicalId":414195,"journal":{"name":"Jsme International Journal Series B-fluids and Thermal Engineering","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126563685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The SI works as a direct heat exchanger between feedwater from condensers and steam extracted from turbines. It can attain pressures higher than the supplied steam pressure. The maintenance cost is lower than that of the current feedwater heater because of its simplified system without movable parts. In this paper, we explain the observed mechanisms of the SI experimentally and the analysis of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD). We then describe mainly the analysis of the heat balance and plant efficiency of the innovative-simplified NPP, which adapted to the boiling water reactor (BWR) with the high-efficiency SI. The plant efficiencies of this innovative-simplified BWR with SI are compared with those of a 1100MWe-class BWR. The SI model is adopted in the heat balance simulator as a simplified model. The results show that the plant efficiencies of the innovate-simplified BWR with SI are almost equal to those of the original BWR. They show that the plant efficiency would be slightly higher if the low-pressure steam, which is extracted from the low-pressure turbine, is used because the first-stage of the SI uses very low pressure.","PeriodicalId":414195,"journal":{"name":"Jsme International Journal Series B-fluids and Thermal Engineering","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126915678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Reynolds number defined with a nozzle diameter is Re = 1 500. Spatial discretization is performed by adopting a hybrid scheme of a sixth order compact scheme in the streamwise direction and Fourier series in the cross section. The distance between two jets is fixed at six times the jet diameter, and the inclination angle of the jets is changed from 45 to 70 deg. The results reveal that the turbulence intensity increases with a decrease in the inclination angle and that the jet width increases via jet excitation. These findings suggest that the diverse requirements of jet mixing control can be satisfied by a flexible combination of jets.","PeriodicalId":414195,"journal":{"name":"Jsme International Journal Series B-fluids and Thermal Engineering","volume":"229 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128599291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three kinds of cylindrical walls and a flat wall are provided for the side wall and they are combined and attached to the nozzle. Nine types of side wall conditions are investigated here. Velocity has been measured by a hot wire probe and separation point has been measured by a Pitot tube. Mean velocity profiles, growth of jet half width, decay of jet maximum velocity, and attachment distance are clarified. It is found that when cylindrical walls with different radii are installed, flow pattern changes remarkably depending on the jet velocity. Striking increase in jet half width is found to be related to the flow separation from the smaller cylindrical wall just behind the nozzle by the flow visualization.","PeriodicalId":414195,"journal":{"name":"Jsme International Journal Series B-fluids and Thermal Engineering","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126876648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The jet is excited by azimuthal and axial perturbations to enhance streamwise and axisymmetric vortices. The three-dimensional views of the jet-boundary surface and streamwise vortices are constructed by applying the Taylor hypothesis to the jet cross-sectional images, and the interaction model of streamwise and axisymmetric vortices is proposed. The interaction of spanwise and streamwise vortices in a plane jet is also studied by velocity measurement. The experiment is carried out under conditions similar to those of the axisymmetric jet. The vortical structure is discussed on the basis of the three-dimensional views of phase-averaged vorticities. It is confirmed that the interacting vortical structure is similar to that in an axisymmetric jet. The entrainment mechanisms is also discussed in relation to the vortical structure.","PeriodicalId":414195,"journal":{"name":"Jsme International Journal Series B-fluids and Thermal Engineering","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131733985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The gas and liquid mixing rates measured for two-phase flows were found to be affected by the void fraction and/or flow regime, as reported in our previous study on a simulated square lattice rod bundle channel having hydraulic diameters of about four times larger than the present tight lattice channel. Comparing the present mixing rate data with those for the square lattice channel and a triangle one in other institution, we found that the mixing rate was considerably smaller in the present channel than the other ones, i.e., a channel size effect.","PeriodicalId":414195,"journal":{"name":"Jsme International Journal Series B-fluids and Thermal Engineering","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128846312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, experiments on this phenomenon are carried out in a water tunnel over a Reynolds number range comparable with that of the wind tunnel experiments to investigate the effects of the mass ratio M R and the Scruton number Sc. The alternating lift coefficient C LR for Karman vortex excitation in water flow agrees well with that in air flow in spite of the large differences in M R and Sc between them. However, the value of C LR for the trailing vortex excitation is much lower in water flow and no definite excitation due to the necklace vortex is observed.","PeriodicalId":414195,"journal":{"name":"Jsme International Journal Series B-fluids and Thermal Engineering","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133835501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method involves secondary injection of a lower mass flow control jet into the cross-flow region of the primary jet. The primary jet in this case is a turbulent jet (Re = 55 000) which when injected into the rectangular cavity with no secondary control, attains a stable oscillation with a characteristic Strouhal number of S t,w = 0.013. The injection control method is investigated using a combined experimental and numerical approach with a water model test rig and a 2D and 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Based on previous work, a baseline cavity, with a depth to width ratio of H/W = 0.16 and entry nozzle submergence of S/W = 0.38, is used to study the effect of secondary jet injection parameters on primary jet deflection angle (δ) as a function of momentum ratio (β) and injection position (Y i ). Results have shown primary jet deflection angles (6) of up to 15° for a momentum ratio (β) of 20% can be achieved for a secondary jet injection position of Y 1 /W = 0.12.","PeriodicalId":414195,"journal":{"name":"Jsme International Journal Series B-fluids and Thermal Engineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122283125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the total heat transfer area constraint or the total thermal conductance constraint, the analytical solutions of optimal area-ratio and the corresponding maximum COPare obtained under a fixed cooling rate. The results show that the internal irreversibility can penalize the plant’s COP, and the internal irreversibility has more significant effects on a freezing system than on an air-conditioning system. When there is no internal irreversibility, a special case of the analytical solution is exactly the same as that obtained from the previous study.","PeriodicalId":414195,"journal":{"name":"Jsme International Journal Series B-fluids and Thermal Engineering","volume":"390 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122849955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
