The objective of the tests was determined the influence of, changing shear span to effective depth ratio a/d, the existence of circular openings in shear span and using inclined strips of carbon fiber polymer (CFRP) on behavior of deep beams. The general trend in crack pattern, the load-deflection response, and the mode of failure of reinforced SCC deep beams were also investigated. All specimens had the same geometry, details of the flexure and shear reinforcement in both vertical and horizontal directions and they were tested under symmetrical two-point loads up to failure. The experimental results revealed that the web openings within shear spans caused an important reduction in the deep beam capacity by 50% when compared with the corresponding solid beam. The increase a/d ratio from 0.8 to 1.2 decreases the ultimate load by 21.7% and 22.5 % for the reference unstrengthened beam and strengthened beam, respectively, also it was found that the externally inclined CFRP strips in deep beams increased the ultimate strength up to 39.5%, and enhanced the stiffness of deep beams with openings.","PeriodicalId":414074,"journal":{"name":"Association of Arab Universities Journal of Engineering Sciences","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133683900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was conducted to test the role of  Metakaolin  produced by calcination of silt from Baloran dam in Lattakia on the Syrian coast as supplementary cementing material by 10% -15% -20% - 25% in GRC mixture, and to determine the effect of it on the consistency and flexure strength over 180 days, as well as to test its role in improving the micro-structure of the mixture by reducing the content of Ca(OH)2 which were tested using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques, and as a result reduced the erosion of fibers as shown in images by Scanning Electronic Electron Microscopy (SEM). Moreover the role of calcined silt has been studied in controlling the degradation of the material over time which tested by immersion in hot water 50° C for 150 days and by drying – wetting cycles. Also the effect of calcined silt on absorption, porosity and resistance of sulfates attacks was studied. The results have shown that used silt has no negative effect on consistency or mechanical properties, and it improved all the studied durability factors.","PeriodicalId":414074,"journal":{"name":"Association of Arab Universities Journal of Engineering Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128849577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Batch sorption experiments of single and binary components systems were conducted as a function of pH, sorbent dosage; contact time, and agitation speed were investigated to optimize the best conditions for maximum of metal ions removal. The experimental data fitted slightly best to the Langmuir isotherm model than to Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models. The experimental data proved that the adsorption kinetic of Cd (II) and Zn (II) could be described by a pseudo-first order model. The sequence for metal ions removal in single and binary system was Zn (II)> Cd (II), the removal efficiency of both metals decreased in the binary system.","PeriodicalId":414074,"journal":{"name":"Association of Arab Universities Journal of Engineering Sciences","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115005393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drilling fluid plays an important role by reducing these frictional forces. In this research, an enhancement of lubricating properties of drilling fluids was fundamentally examined by adding Lignite NPs into the water-based drilling fluid. Lubricity, Rheology and filtration properties of water-based drilling fluid were measured at room temperature using OFITE EP and Lubricity Tester, OFITE Model 900 Viscometer, and OFITE Low-Pressure Filter Press, respectively. Lignite NPs were added at different concentrations (0.05 %, 0.1 %, 0.2 %, 0.5 %, and 1 %) by weight into water-based drilling fluid. Lignite NPs showed good reduction in COF of water-based drilling fluid. The enhancement was increased with increasing Lignite NPs concentrations; 23.68%, 35.52%, and 45.3 % reduction in COF were obtained by adding 0.2%, 0.5%, and 1% by weight Lignite NPs concentration, respectively.","PeriodicalId":414074,"journal":{"name":"Association of Arab Universities Journal of Engineering Sciences","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128466175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect of interference depth between tool shoulder and surface workpiece on the welding quality and its effect on the mechanical and metallography properties of welded joints were studied. This process is carried out using a composite tool consists of a concave shoulder made of H13 tool steel and cylindrical left-hand thread with 1mm pitch pin (probe) made of cobalt-based alloy MP159. The dimensions of tools were 14mm shoulder diameter and the pin has 5mm diameter and 2.7mm length. The tool rotation speed and welding speed were 981 rpm 169 mm/min respectively, and the tilt angle was 2°. The range of interference depth between the shoulder and workpiece was selected (0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25, and 0.3) mm. various tests were executed to evaluate the welding quality. The results show that lack of filling defect appeared on the welding surface at the interference depth 0.05 mm. An invisible tunnel and lack of penetration in the bottom of the stir zone appeared when the interference depths were 0.1 mm and 0.15 mm. Defect-free welds obtained when interference depths were (0.2, 0.25, and 0.3) mm. The welding efficiency of the defect-free welds was in the range (85.3-92.3%) depending on the ultimate tensile strength of the parent alloy.","PeriodicalId":414074,"journal":{"name":"Association of Arab Universities Journal of Engineering Sciences","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122380115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three types of automatic movable thermal screens were tested to decrease the heat loss inside a greenhouse. The transparent cover area was 29.2   with 4 mm glass cover thickness. The mathematical model was formulated in four parts which are the inside air, transparent cover, soil surface, and subsoil layer. The results of the thermal curtains showed that the average temperature of the inside air during the night for the polyethylene, polypropylene, and bubble films was 8.1 ̊C, 10.3 ̊C, and 12.5 ̊C respectively and greenhouse without screens was 5.9 ̊C. These results showed that the bubble film was more effective in a saving energy than polypropylene and polyethylene films. Good agreement was obtained between the mathematical model and the measured values (with relative root mean square errors below 5%). It was shown that the suggested different types of movable thermal curtains were powerful in decreasing heating losses, which is reached about 21.7 % compared with a greenhouse without curtains.","PeriodicalId":414074,"journal":{"name":"Association of Arab Universities Journal of Engineering Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131218244","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Soil sampleswere obtained from Al-Ahdab oil field in Wasit governorate, located in the east of Iraq. In the laboratory, the soil specimens were contaminated artificiallywith three quantities of copper sulfate) CuSO4.5H2O) (100, 200 and 400) gm. The contaminantwas dissolved in 10 liters of distilled water and then added to the intact soil. The intact soil samplekept soaked with the contaminantfor 30 days. Several tests were conducted onthe soil samples (intact and contaminated) to measure the effects of copper sulfate on the geotechnical properties of clayey soil. The results of tests showed significant effectsfor copper on the studied soil properties. The copper sulfate causesdecreasing the percentage of fine particles in the soil, Atterberg s limits, permeability and optimum water content. Inaddition, the copper sulfate causes increasing thespecific gravity andmaximum dry density of soil. The shear strength parameters of soil are measured by using direct shear test, unconfined compression test and unconsolidated undrained triaxial test are decreased with increasing the concentration of copper sulfate in soil. Also, its noted increasing the initial void ratio, the compression index and recompression index with increasing concentration of contaminant in soil.","PeriodicalId":414074,"journal":{"name":"Association of Arab Universities Journal of Engineering Sciences","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115433476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research demonstrated theoretical study on top-down fatigue crackingusing the finite element method. A three- dimensional finite elastic structural element is used to modal pavement using (ABAQUS ver. 6.12.1) program. The results obtained from this studydemonstrated that maximum value of tensile strain developed at the surface of asphalt layer for flexible pavement due to the horizontal traction generated from wheel load application at contact area. Also, the horizontal tensile strain ( ) at surface of asphalt layer is increasing rapidly with load repetitions with values greater than that generated at bottom by (94%) at failure. This prescribed the basic or inherent features of top crack initiation and down propagates within asphalt layer in flexible pavement. The top horizontal tensile strains obtained from the finite element model is higher than the empirical relations by (20%); since the finite element analysis of flexible pavement considered the surface horizontal tensile strains due to contact traction force at tire pavement interface. Finally, according to the results of this study the horizontal tensile strains at the top of asphalt surface significantly increase the damage intensity of fatigue failure for flexible pavement.","PeriodicalId":414074,"journal":{"name":"Association of Arab Universities Journal of Engineering Sciences","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122663518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fourteen water parameters were used for estimating WQI: pH, Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, Orthophosphate, Nitrate, Calcium, Magnesium, Total Hardness, Sodium, Sulphate, Chloride, Total Dissolved Solids, Electrical Conductivity and Total Alkalinity. These parameters were provided from the Water Resources Ministryfrom seven stations along the river for the period 2011 to 2016. The results of WQI analysis revealed that Diyala River is good to poor at the north of Diyala province while it is poor to very polluted at the south of Baghdad City. The selected parameters were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis test for detecting factors contributing to the degradation of water quality and for eliminating independent variables that exhibit the highest contribution in p-value. The analysis of results revealed that ANN model was good in predicting the WQI. The confusion matrix for Artificial Neural Model (NNM) gave almost 96% for training, 85.7% for testing and 100% for holdout. In relation to GIS, six color maps of the river have been constructed to give clear images of the water quality along the river.","PeriodicalId":414074,"journal":{"name":"Association of Arab Universities Journal of Engineering Sciences","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115892754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
