For that reason it is important to have efficient implementation architectures for polar codes in hardware. Motivated by this fact we propose a belief propagation (BP) decoder architecture for an increasingly popular hardware platform; Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The proposed architecture supports any code rate and is quite flexible in terms of hardware complexity and throughput. The architecture can also be extended to support multiple block lengths without increasing the hardware complexity a lot. Moreover various schedulers can be adapted into the proposed architecture so that list decoding techniques can be used with a single block. Finally the proposed architecture is compared with a convolutional turbo code (CTC) decoder for WiMAX taken from a Xilinx Product Specification and seen that polar codes are superior to CTC codes both in hardware complexity and throughput.","PeriodicalId":414065,"journal":{"name":"2011 8th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129064710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider realistic large scale and small scale path loss models, taking into account the antennas heights and the presence or not of line of sight (LOS). Results demonstrate that large gains in throughput and coverage area can be obtained when the source and the relay are allowed to use different spectral efficiencies. Moreover, we also propose a discretized RA scheme with only six levels, which achieves a performance close to optimum.","PeriodicalId":414065,"journal":{"name":"2011 8th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126349339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These gains have mainly been demonstrated in scenarios with two-way relaying. Inspired by the ideas of wireless NC, recently we have proposed techniques for coordinated direct/relay (CDR) transmissions. These techniques embrace the interference among the communication flows to/from direct and relayed users, leveraging on the fact that the interference can be subsequently canceled. Hence, by allowing simultaneous transmissions, spectral efficiency is increased. In our prior work, we have considered CDR with non-regenerative relay that uses Amplify-and-Forward (AF). In this paper we consider the case of regenerative Decode-and-Forward (DF) relay. This refers also to joint decoding of the interfering flows received over a multiple-access channel. Our analysis shows that the assumption of regenerative relaying brings new parametrization of the CDR schemes, such that the the transmission times used by each node are subject to optimization. We show how these parameters should be chosen if the sum-rate needs to be optimized. Our results confirm the high gains in spectral efficiency over the reference schemes.","PeriodicalId":414065,"journal":{"name":"2011 8th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134511324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We explore the block transmission, single carrier and zero padding like structure of the transmit symbol frame to implement a frequency domain receiver. Using the fact that user spreading codes are pseudo randomly chosen and varies on a symbol-by-symbol basis, a simple and efficient channel estimation algorithm that does not require complex matrix operations is also proposed. The QoS performance at the DLC layer is included through a multidimensional DTMC jointly describing the statistical behavior of the arrival process, the queuing system and the PHY/MAC layers. A cross-layer design based on the DTMC analytical model is proposed. This cross-layer scheme aims at maximizing the average throughput of the system with constraints on the maximum tolerable average packet loss and delay.","PeriodicalId":414065,"journal":{"name":"2011 8th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134412693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An intermediate multi-antenna relay station is used to support the bidirectional communications. In such a scenario, the required data rates for up - and downlink are typically different which is considered by introducing asymmetric rate requirements. Non-regenerative two-way relaying is applied and the nodes can subtract the back-propagated self-interference. To fully utilize this capability of the nodes for the transceive filter design at the relay station, an MMSE based transceive filter is derived which does not suppress self-interference. Thus, the required number of antennas at the relay station is reduced. Additionally, the transceive filter is optimized for asymmetric rate requirements by introducing a weighting parameter. Furthermore, an alternating optimization between the transceive filter at the relay station and the transmit and receive filters at the nodes is introduced to fulfill the asymmetric rate requirements and to increase the achievable sum rates. Simulation results show that the proposed filter design at the nodes and at the relay station requires less antennas and achieves higher sum rates compared to conventional approaches.","PeriodicalId":414065,"journal":{"name":"2011 8th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"45 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133391113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In case of a backhaul of limited number of bits, we investigate how to allocate these bits jointly with the base-stations power among users in order to maximize the sum-rate under fairness constraints. Firstly, we study this problem with the assumption of one user per cell. We find that binary allocation of power is optimal. Then, the multi-user case is considered. A solution of the optimization problem is developed under high signal-to-interference and noise ratio(SINR). We prove that under these assumptions, backhaul bits allocation among the cells or among the users of each cell has no effect on the sum-rate of system. Hence, allocating these bits in order to achieve fairness conditions is possible without any loss in the sum-rate.","PeriodicalId":414065,"journal":{"name":"2011 8th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130893609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We present a general CoMP technique based on coordinated beam selection and apply this technique in a heterogeneous wireless network where a hexagonal layout of macro base stations is overlaid with clusters of femto cells with closed subscriber group functionality. Without coordination, this scenario can be extremely challenging to mobile users that are located in the vicinity of the femto cells but are not allowed to connect to them. To support upcoming multimedia services for emergency personnel, a communication technology which provides high data rates is required. At presence the most common wireless communication technology is IEEE 802.11, which provides sufficient data rates for emergency communication. Due to the popularity of IEEE 802.11 networks, existing networks at the incident scene cause harsh conditions for wireless communications. For first respon-ders, a reliable communication infrastructure is crucial. Hence the applied communication technology must provide Quality of Service (QoS). Existing QoS mechanisms, like IEEE 802.11e are designed for multimedia applications. In this paper, we present a new set of parameters for the DCF to support QoS in emergency scenarios. We propose six novel priority classes for heterogeneous types of emergency communication. All types of emergency communication are prioritized over legacy IEEE 802.11 communication. The performance of the new parameter set is analyzed through an analytical model based on Markov chains and is validated through simulations. The results lead to the conclusion that our proposed parameter set provides a reliable communication network for emergency scenarios, even with existing interference networks.","PeriodicalId":414065,"journal":{"name":"2011 8th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132401420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to reduce the complexity of the DF processing with time-varying channels, the proposed receiver updates the filter weights by using a recursive least squares (RLS) based algorithm. An enhanced adaptive detection and interference cancellation is achieved by introducing multiple constellation points as decision candidates. A complexity reduction strategy is also developed to avoid redundant processing with reliable decisions. By using the tentative decisions, the soft-output is obtained. This highly efficient detector is also incorporated with a multiple branch (MB) architecture to achieve a higher detection diversity order. Simulations show that the proposed DFCC technique has a complexity as low as the adaptive DF detector while it achieves a significant performance gain and approaches the optimal performance.","PeriodicalId":414065,"journal":{"name":"2011 8th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115450111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
