In 2015, an exploration well drilled in neighboring block, successfully found ~500ft TVT of gross oil, 50% less than expected due to structural changes. With lower than expected hydrocarbon in place, the project team was forced to re-evaluate the development and identified key strategies to minimize the number of wells to drill while ensuring healthy project economics. Optimizing reserves and ensuring future accessibility while minimizing number of wells and cost, were the key challenges. Rather than developing all sands with highly deviated well, the team designed an extended reach horizontal well targeting a single key reservoir containing 60% of block STOIIP. Team decided to drill from an existing platform with no pilot hole but opted for real time reservoir mapping technology for well placement. The well was designed with no smart completion due to surface power limitation. First time in the region a dual defensive sand control mechanism was selected, Gravel Pack & Sand Screens. The 1st ever horizontal well was drilled S field meeting its objective at Q4-2017 and exceeding forecasted initial rates. With a long horizontal open hole section and being the only well in the block, a major challenge was to delay water coning and to control water cut once water breaks through. This was achieved with the installation of 8 Inflow Control Devices (ICDs). Real-time reservoir mapping while drilling was used successfully to land the well and then optimize the production section in good quality sands despite structural uncertainty. The well, designed with 60° maximum inclinations, ensures routine well intervention to be done using slickline (i.e. gas lift valve change). Any major intervention would still require coil tubing with usage of barge. The horizontal profile overcomes the limitation of power supply for automation that would be faced with high angle deviated well hence saved significant surface modification cost. The out of box solution of optimized field development plan for complex offshore Brownfield with limited facilities modification, while being cost conscious but technically sound concept proven to provide the answer for sustainable production growth in S Field at low oil price environment. The success of this well has changed the team mindset to relook and propose similar design wells in previously deemed uneconomical FDPs within the S Field.

This promise is achieved in part by creating a digital infrastructure that extends vertically from the drill bit to the remote enterprise, and horizontally from exploration to production. Critical to the success of automation is the unimpeded flow of quality data through this infrastructure. This paper focuses on studying only drilling systems automation, but the lessons learned can be applied to other disciplines such as completions and production.\u0000 Due to the disconnected nature of the well construction business with multiple disciplines and companies involved, data silos and restrictions are numerous. This paper describes the development of a wellsite-based automation system consisting of an open data aggregator, with networked surface and downhole sensors and real-time applications for process monitoring, advice and control. The data aggregator is designed to allow all relevant parties to access and share data in a high-velocity deterministic environment. This access and sharing permits easy implementation of comprehensive drilling system automation, be it monitoring, advising or control, in a controlled, productive and safe manner. The paper also describes the implementation of automation applications using data from the aggregator, covering real-time drilling optimization and hydraulics.\u0000 Operation of the data aggregator at the wellsite with connection to rig systems and remote operating centers is described. The data aggregator uses protocols that are international standards, and it is designed to be open and not proprietary. From an implementation standpoint, this allows easy interface of the aggregator to measurement and control systems, and access to copious third-party communication products, reducing development time and increasing reliability. Observations are that many rig instrumentation and control systems use either customized or proprietary protocols; common data information standards are lacking in the oilfield. In addition, data ownership and governance must be addressed at an industry level, as well as secure bi-directional flow of data between wellsite and town. While these topics are, to some extent, being addressed in industry road-mapping and guidance groups, progress is slow and this hinders the adoption of technology.\u0000 The paper describes the development and implementation of an open data aggregator for the wellsite. The aggregator allows third-party real-time applications to use and share data, and to collaborate on industry standards. It further describes the development of automation applications riding on the data aggregator, and their use in drilling systems automation. This case study illustrates and examines issues that must be addressed at the company and industry level to move universal drilling systems automation closer to reality.

It also tries to answer the following questions: What do we understand of Operational Readiness and Operational Safety? How do they fit in with Asset owners’ requirement of the project, and process needed to be carried out in the space of assessment of Operational Readiness & Operational Safety review by the project management team? The overall objective of the program is to enlighten the audience regarding the physical engineering characteristics of the FPSO and developing a step by step method for the safe and reliable operational processes over the life of a facility using the elements in the risk-based process safety management for managing risk. This also identifies hazard scenarios/events and potential associated human errors. Further, to develop models and tools in order to integrate human reliability science into predictive models and tools for analysis of the safety of the FPSO operations.
