The young moraine area to the south-east of Berlin was repeatedly overrun and covered by Scandinavian ice sheets (SISs). The last glaciation took place during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), when the\u0000last/most recent SIS reached its furthest southern extent. An incompletely\u0000formed chain of terminal moraines marks the Brandenburg ice stage. The most\u0000recent glacier had its greatest environmental impact due to the large\u0000quantities of released meltwaters. Many subglacial channels, massive\u0000proglacial sands and huge meltwater streamways (Urstromtäler) were\u0000formed at that time. The excursion will focus on soils and sediments of Late Pleistocene and Holocene age that have been modified by land use since the Slavic Middle Ages. The glacial landscape of northern Brandenburg, especially\u0000the Eberswalde–Chorin area, is one of the most important study areas of\u0000Quaternary research in northern Germany, not only with respect to its\u0000research history, but especially with regard to new mapping,\u0000sedimentological logging, and dating results using up-to-date methodologies.\u0000These new results have added an important puzzle-piece contributing to the\u0000development of a new concept of ice dynamics in the SW sector of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet (SIS)\u0000during Marine Isotope Stage 2 (MIS 2). Robust reconstruction of past climate and environmental change based on\u0000proxy data obtained from natural archives requires an in-depth understanding\u0000of the processes and mechanisms that form and determine these proxies. Here\u0000we present comprehensive long-term monitoring projects for seasonally\u0000laminated (varved) lake sediments and tree rings in the northern German\u0000lowlands. The two monitoring sites are located in the nature park\u0000Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide (Tiefer See) and in the Müritz National\u0000Park (tree rings) and are an integral part of the Helmholtz TERrestrial\u0000ENvironmental Observatories (TERENO) infrastructure initiative. Both sites\u0000are located in the close vicinity of moraine deposits of the main ice advance of\u0000the Pomeranian phase of the Weichselian glaciation.
