To this aim, time varying energy prices are used, which can be diminished in case of excessive energy production to incentivize energy consumption (or increased in case of shortage to discourage energy utilization). In this paper we evaluate the complexity of the optimal scheduling problem for a fleet of EVs aimed at minimizing the overall cost of the battery recharge in presence of timevariable energy tariffs. The scenario under consideration is a fleet owner having full knowledge of the customers' traveling needs at the beginning of the scheduling horizon. We prove that the problem has polynomial complexity, provide complexity lower and upper bounds, and compare its performance to a benchmark approach which does not rely on prior knowledge of the customers' requests, in order to evaluate whether the additional complexity required by the optimal scheduling strategy w.r.t. the benchmark is worthy the achieved economic advantages. Numerical results show considerable cost savings obtained by the optimal scheduling strategy.","PeriodicalId":412965,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Online Conference on Green Communications (OnlineGreenComm)","volume":"420 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122455762","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Notably, new measurement devices and advanced control applications are being deployed with the aim to greatly improve the stability and efficiency of the grid. A communication infrastructure together with a middleware that delivers updates across wide areas in a timely and reliable manner is thus a cornerstone in the emerging Smart Grid. In this paper, we analyse distributed computing technologies that meet the stringent communications requirements.We show that the solutions and practices developed for Machine-To-Machine (M2M) communications, ETSI M2M middleware in particular, can be successfully applied to future Smart Grid networks. The pitfalls of the proposed architecture are identified and an upgrade is devised to provide for the critical event-driven, real-time communication required by some applications.","PeriodicalId":412965,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Online Conference on Green Communications (OnlineGreenComm)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129003508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also provides a new approach for the wireless devices to share each other’s energy storage, without relying on the power grid or traffic offloading. In this paper, we study RF energy harvesting enabled power balancing within the decode-and-forward (DF) relaying-enhanced cooperative wireless system. An optimal power allocation policy is proposed for the scenario where both source and relay nodes can draw power from the radio frequency signals transmitted by each other. To maximize the overall throughput while meeting the energy constraints imposed by the RF sources, an optimization problem is formulated and solved. Based on different harvesting efficiency and channel condition, closed form solutions for optimal joint source and relay power allocation are derived.","PeriodicalId":412965,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Online Conference on Green Communications (OnlineGreenComm)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134278469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At a low call traffic load, network operators are expected to save energy by switching off some of their base stations (BSs), and letting mobile users to be served by the remaining active BSs. Unlike the existing results, we investigate dynamic planning not only from the network operator perspective, but also from the mobile user perspective. We propose a dynamic planning approach that accounts for the expected energy consumption of network operators (in the downlink) and mobile users (in the uplink), based on a two-timescale decision strategy. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed dynamic planning approach can balauce energy efficiency for network operators and mobile users while the traditional dynamic plauning approaches may lead to high energy consumption for mobile users in the uplink.","PeriodicalId":412965,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Online Conference on Green Communications (OnlineGreenComm)","volume":"86 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124150104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a solution to the first three problems, the multidimensional signaling has been proposed recently by author. In multidimensional signaling, for the conveyance information over spatial domain multiplexing (SDM) based fibers (few-mode fibers, few-core fibers, few-mode few- core fibers), all available degrees of freedoms, be optical or electrical, have been employed. In electrical domain discrete-time basis functions (such as Slepian sequences) have been employed. In optical domain, both polarization states and spatial modes have been employed. Additionally, the orthogonal division multiplexing (ODM) has been employed in optical domain to enable beyond 1 Pb/s serial optical transport over single-mode fibers. With SDM, the serial optical transport over SDM fibers exceeding 10 Pb/s is achievable. Concepts of statistical physics and information theory have been used in energy-efficient multidimensional signal constellation design. To solve for the security issues problem, the use of FBGs with impulse responses derived from mutually orthogonal Slepian sequences has been advocated.","PeriodicalId":412965,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Online Conference on Green Communications (OnlineGreenComm)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117195898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has become a particularly interesting problem with the introduction of residential photovoltaic (PV) power generation facilities. This paper addresses the problem of task scheduling of (a collection of) energy consumers with PV power generation facilities, in order to minimize the electricity bill. A general type of dynamic pricing scenario is assumed where the energy price is both time-of-use and total power consumption-dependent. A negotiation-based iterative approach has been proposed that is inspired by the state-of-the-art Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) routing algorithms. More specifically, the negotiation-based algorithm is used to rip-up and re-schedule all tasks in each iteration, and the concept of congestion is effectively introduced to dynamically adjust the schedule of each task based on the historical scheduling results as well as the (historical) total power consumption in each time slot. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves up to 51.8% improvement in electric bill reduction compared with baseline methods.","PeriodicalId":412965,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Online Conference on Green Communications (OnlineGreenComm)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124855852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given that wireless communication systems operate on radiofrequency waves, the electromagnetic (EM) radiation exposure they generate is also unprecedented and, hence, this could have adverse health effects on both humans and animals according to the World Health Organization. In this paper, we propose a user scheduling/power allocation scheme to minimize the EM exposure of users subject to transmitting a target number of bits. Our user scheduling method is based on assigning priority levels to each user and the user with the lowest priority level is scheduled for transmission. Power allocation, on the other hand, is based on the water-filling approach over time by using the past channel gains of a user to compute its water level. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme performs much better than a spectral efficiency based scheme but has a higher EM emission in comparison with a non-practical ideal scheme.","PeriodicalId":412965,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Online Conference on Green Communications (OnlineGreenComm)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126234028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
