Palmprint contains different types of visible features that can be used for identification of criminals, including big details, like crease, ridge flow, and small details, like ridges, valleys and minutiae points. In this paper we focus on ridge extraction task. We demonstrate how integration of angular preference to an existing algorithm (Non-Halo Complex Matched Filtering, NH-CMF) may significantly improve quality of extracted features. We introduce the approach where NH-CMF and automated analysis of magnitude weighted angle histogram are used for ridge pattern extraction and noise reduction. Extracted information may support or even automate ridge routing that is necessary for palmprint feature extraction in forensics.","PeriodicalId":412596,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133643924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different from the popular temporal reconstruction-based methods, the proposed method uses the average gait over the whole sequence as input feature template. Assuming the effect caused by extremely low frame-rate or large gait fluctuations are intra-class variations that the gallery data fails to capture, we build a general model based on random subspace method. More specifically, a number of weak classifiers are combined to reduce the generalization errors. We evaluate our method on the OU-ISIR-D dataset with large/small gait fluctuations, and very competitive results are achieved when both the probe and gallery are extremely low frame-rate gait sequences (e.g., 1 fps).","PeriodicalId":412596,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130127384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We were interested in correlating iris color and texture with DNA. Our data consist of 212 eye images along with DNA: 32 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We used two types of biometrics to describe the eye images: One for iris color and one for iris texture. Both biometrics were high dimensional and a sparse principle component analysis (SPCA) reduced the dimensions and resulted in a representation of data with good interpretability. The correlations between the sparse principal components (SPCs) and the 32 SNPs were found using a canonical correlation analysis (CCA). The result was a single significant canonical correlation (CC) for both biometrics. Each CC comprised two correlated canonical variables, consisting of a linear combination of SPCs and a linear combination of SNPs, respectively. The significant canonical variables for color and texture were primarily explained by the first SPC (SPC1). Therefore, we made a visual inspection of the first SPCs. The color based SPC1 explained a blue to brown variation in iris color and the texture based SPC1 gave a general explanation of iris texture. The SNPs (rs12896399, rs3733542, rs6475555, rs12913832) and (rs12896399, rs3733542, rs12913832) had the highest correlation to the canonical variable for color and texture, respectively. Three of the most contributing SNPs were the same for both biometrics, revealing a covariance between iris color and texture.","PeriodicalId":412596,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF)","volume":"79 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130983267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, stereo videos can help extract semantic information about a person or object movement direction, not only on the image plane, but also in depth space. This paper describes a method that performs semantic labeling of movement direction in stereo videos along the horizontal and vertical axes and also along the depth axis when disparity information is available. A method that that extracts information about whether two or more objects are approaching or moving away is also presented.","PeriodicalId":412596,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126571694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There exist separation techniques based on chemical imaging, but they require invasive fingerprint acquisition (e.g. applying chemicals) methods which not only compromise the integrity of potential evidence but also eliminate the possibility of analysing the fingerprints using other means (e.g. spectroscopy). Addressing this issue, in this work we use scanned samples of two overlapped latent fingerprints acquired noninvasively by a Chromatic White Light (CWL) sensor. To properly apply our previous separation approach adapted from Chen et al. on those samples, in this paper we conduct a thorough parameter optimisation. A test set of 20 authentic overlapped fingerprints is used. With a cross examination with 4 templates of 2 different kinds using NIST Biometric Image Software (NBIS), we obtain 160 samples from the matching test, which shows a clear increasing number of positive matching after the separation of the fingerprints and leads to an overall Equal Error Rate (EER) of 8.3%, which is lower than the results from Chen et al. where simulated samples are used.","PeriodicalId":412596,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133815262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However face biometric systems can be highly vulnerable to spoofing attacks where an impostor tries to bypass the face recognition system using a photo or video sequence. In this paper a novel liveness detection method, based on the 3D structure of the face, is proposed. Processing the 3D curvature of the acquired data, the proposed approach allows a biometric system to distinguish a real face from a photo, increasing the overall performance of the system and reducing its vulnerability. In order to test the real capability of the methodology a 3D face database has been collected simulating spoofing attacks, therefore using photographs instead of real faces. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":412596,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF)","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131869495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is therefore critical that biometric evaluations be performed as accurately as possible to determine their legitimacy as a forensic tool. This paper argues that, for forensic verification scenarios, traditional performance measures are insufficiently accurate. This inaccuracy occurs because existing verification evaluations implicitly assume that an imposter claiming a false identity would claim a random identity rather than consciously selecting a target to impersonate. In addition to describing this new vulnerability, the paper describes a novel Targeted FAR metric that combines the traditional False Acceptance Rate (FAR) measure with a term that indicates how performance degrades with the number of potential targets. The paper includes an evaluation of the effects of targeted impersonation on an existing academic face verification system. This evaluation reveals that even with a relatively small number of targets false acceptance rates can increase significantly, making the analysed biometric systems unreliable.","PeriodicalId":412596,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF)","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129369691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, acquisition device identification is studied using the sketches of spectral features (SSFs) as intrinsic fingerprints. The SSFs are extracted from the speech signal by first averaging its spectrogram along the time axis and then by mapping the resulting mean spectrogram into a low-dimension space, such that the “distance properties” of the high-dimensional mean spectrograms are preserved. Such a mapping results by taking the inner product of the mean spectrogram with a vector of independent identically distributed random variables drawn from a p-stable distribution. By applying a sparse-representation based classifier to the SSFs, state-of-the-art identification accuracy exceeding 95% has been measured on a set of 8 telephone handsets from Lincoln-Labs Handset Database (LLHDB).","PeriodicalId":412596,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Workshop on Biometrics and Forensics (IWBF)","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122700910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The images were acquired during controlled alcohol consumption by twenty persons. Since the sample of the persons employed in the experimental procedure was small, the proposed approach gives only indications which locations of the face are prominent to present significant changes with alcohol consumption. Applying each neural networks on a different location of the face we investigate their capability to converge on the specific locations. It is found that the face forehead and nose change thermal behavior with alcohol consumption. Small and large neural structures are tested.
