For a given network topology, the proposed spectrum allocation method first generates an interference graph (or conflict graph) based on the network topology, traffic flows and interference constraints. Then a graph coloring algorithm is applied to the interference graph and the chromatic number of the graph is obtained. This number is the minimum number of distinct spectrum slices required. Further, spectrum allocation is done based on the max-min fair share algorithm or proportional fair algorithm according to the spectrum demands for different spectrum blocks. For medium access among secondary users, we then describe and implement a MAC protocol for 802.22-type cognitive radio networks. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate its effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":412079,"journal":{"name":"2009 European Wireless Conference","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127844549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High peak data rates and high spectral efficiency are some of the requirements of these standards, which should also include Flexible Spectrum Usage (FSU) techniques for an efficient use of the limited available bandwidth (BW). Considering Non-Contiguous Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (NC-OFDM) as a possible FSU proposal for LTE/LTE-Advanced, in this paper an analysis of the effects of the RF imperfections —such as IQ imbalance, phase noise and non-linear power amplifier— on the downlink transmission in LTE/LTE-Advanced is presented. Two different aspects are pointed out. First, concerning NC-OFDM, it is shown that the RF transmitter causes an increase of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) in the subchannels not used for transmission, which means interference with the other systems using those subchannels. Second, concerning the high data rates and high spectral efficiency, it turns out that the 64-QAM rate 3/4, used to reach these requirements, is deeply affected by the RF transmitter imperfections.","PeriodicalId":412079,"journal":{"name":"2009 European Wireless Conference","volume":"32 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115419891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These errors are basically of two types: burst errors and random errors. Simulating the behavior of RF channels affected by physical impairments has been subject of several investigations in the past years. Nevertheless, researches generally do not consider the occurrence of both errors at the same time. The current approach to simulate RF channel behavior may lead to imprecisions on the results. In order to deal with this limitation, this paper proposes an hybrid error sequence generator, which is able of generating both burst and random error sequences. The proposed error sequence generator is applied to a case study that aims to evaluate the performance of the channel encoder of the IEEE 802.16 networks. The outcomes of the experiments show that using an hybrid model reflects better the realistic behavior of RF channels.","PeriodicalId":412079,"journal":{"name":"2009 European Wireless Conference","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131367053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as more traffic is injected into the network it may lead to throughput degradation, packet loss and longer transmission delay. In this paper, we argue that network performance can be improved by cross-layer design over multiple layers and load balancing based on service types. Correspondingly, a novel traffic splitting policy which can potentially utilize diverse paths for transmitting traffic flows of different service types from the same router has been proposed and investigated. Such a policy is able to balance traffic load, ideally aggregate capacities across multiple paths and leverage diversity among the paths to achieve low packet loss and more stable throughput.","PeriodicalId":412079,"journal":{"name":"2009 European Wireless Conference","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124026000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The investigation is based on analytical models and real implementations on a testbed developed for this purpose. While the first MAC approach is alike IEEE802.11, the other two approaches are based on packet aggregation per node and on cooperative approaches. It can be shown that the two novel MAC schemes are increasing the throughput compared to the standard CSMA/CA approach, but only the cooperative approach is resulting in lower channel access delays.","PeriodicalId":412079,"journal":{"name":"2009 European Wireless Conference","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124924850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using the asynchronous connectionless link (ACL) for data transmission, Bluetooth provides different packet types, namely DM and DH packets. Each packet has a different payload size and in the actual implementation the packet selection is based on the channel conditions. In this paper we present and discuss results of a measurements campaign that we have made on commercial mobile phones. We show that energy savings can be achieved by selecting the appropriate packet type in an energy aware manner, by forcing the phone to use a specific packet type.","PeriodicalId":412079,"journal":{"name":"2009 European Wireless Conference","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115698447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Multiaccess mobile devices already on the market provide a capability to hand over the heterogeneous networks but so far there has not been any commonly approved way to efficiently capitalize on this feature. Media Independent Handover Services standard specified by the IEEE 802.21 working group is expected to establish the basis for heterogeneous handovers. Although IEEE 802.21 has usage also beyond heterogeneous handovers, its capabilities do not fulfill all the requirements of adaptive multimedia transmission. For example, upper layer events and end-to-end traffic control communication are outside the scope of IEEE 802.21. In this study, we introduce an information service architecture for adaptive multimedia which enables to collect and disseminate events and information from the different layers of the protocol stack locally and also between network entities regardless of their location in the network. Our architecture presents a Triggering Engine on top of the IEEE 802.21 services in order to introduce upper layer events, flexibility to event distribution, and end-to-end event based signaling to adaptive multimedia transmission.","PeriodicalId":412079,"journal":{"name":"2009 European Wireless Conference","volume":"492 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115861184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a new efficient retransmission MAC protocol is proposed for IEEE 802.11 based cooperation communications, with minimum modifications to the DCF scheme. Throughput and access delay performance of the proposed protocols is analyzed in error-prone and highly temporally correlated channels. In the downlink transparent frame structure, the base stations (BSs) transmit in the first time subslot and the relay stations (RSs) transmit in the second time subslot. A non-cooperative power allocation game is defined for maximizing throughput and reducing co-frequency interference. The distributed process of this game based power allocation scheme is given. Of particular interest in the results is the fairness seen by users and this is compared with equal power allocation, the simulation results showing that the reduced user fairness is worthwhile due to a great power saving.","PeriodicalId":412079,"journal":{"name":"2009 European Wireless Conference","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114816550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
