Particular attention is devoted to the research, preparation, and reception of the video’s exhibition at the Long Beach Museum of Art. The article looks at how Segalove and Darling became “Hollywood anthropologists” in order to gain access to the fighters-turned-actors and explores how the club’s activities interdiscursively resonated with their own position as video artists working on the margins of the entertainment industry. Cauliflower Alley creates an axis of differentiation between the artists’ world and that of the club, revealing their common investment in the uptake of media fragments as they circulated between Hollywood’s centers and peripheries—a process the artists aptly dubbed “intertainment.”","PeriodicalId":41204,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIVES OF AMERICAN ART JOURNAL","volume":"61 1","pages":"48 - 69"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87729722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Pacheco Papers at the Archives of American Art illuminate the shifting circumstances and conflicting expectations the artist faced while exhibiting in different contexts throughout the Americas and bring to light the unique strategy—informed by her residence in both Bolivia and the United States—Pacheco developed to connect notions of the local to a style critics deemed “universal.” While many midcentury Latin American artists explored means of infusing abstraction with markers of local identity, Pacheco invented an innovative visual language that evoked the Bolivian landscape through shape, color, and texture, resonating across hemispheres.","PeriodicalId":41204,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIVES OF AMERICAN ART JOURNAL","volume":"25 1","pages":"26 - 47"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90426126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seitz presented a new curatorial vision of Claude Monet’s late impressionist paintings. The exhibition, mounted at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, included walls dedicated to the impressionist’s series and thematic paintings, including the Water Lilies. Seasons and Moments accomplished more than stoking the US public’s admiration for these works. Seitz used the exhibition to argue that Monet’s impressionism shifted from representing an optical reality to portraying a more abstracted and metaphysical one. Seitz analyzed Monet’s paintings through fin-de-siècle French thinker Henri Bergson’s conceptions of intuition, sensation, and duration.","PeriodicalId":41204,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIVES OF AMERICAN ART JOURNAL","volume":"33 1","pages":"4 - 23"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75202156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The works’ shapes and colors express the theory and method he devised for unifying binary sexes into a single human body. Despite Bess’s direct appeals, the artist’s gallerist Betty Parsons refused to display his research along with his artwork, and American sexologists of the time did not recognize his theories, rightfully finding his ideas incoherent and his methods misguided. Nevertheless, when read through his writing and correspondence in the collections of the Archives of American Art as well as histories of sexology. Bess’s paintings recall nonbinary approaches to sex in early twentieth-century European sexology, forecast contemporary nonbinary approaches to sex within transgender and intersex medicine, and mark a significant point of intersection between histories of homosexuality, transsexuality, and intersex medicine in American art.","PeriodicalId":41204,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIVES OF AMERICAN ART JOURNAL","volume":"19 1","pages":"24 - 43"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79364471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It theorizes “bricozaje,” a concept that combines the terms “bricolage” and “mestizaje,” to argue that the artists enact a reparative relationship to the works’ sites through their use of imagery. The essay first looks at Alvarez’s and Lozano’s sketchbooks to trace bricozaje’s valences as a material practice and critique of bricolage. It proceeds to examine bricozaje as a collaborative practice through the creation of La Entrada (2009), a mural project in San Diego. It then contextualizes the public art project Bright Women (2011) in relation to representations of the US-Mexico border, and concludes by articulating how bricozaje acts as a formal strategy through Lozano’s engagement with gendered iconography.","PeriodicalId":41204,"journal":{"name":"ARCHIVES OF AMERICAN ART JOURNAL","volume":"1 1","pages":"44 - 63"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78890484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
