In a static approach the access environment, that is, the set of authorized users, the mode of access, their access rights, etc., are predefined. This approach is suitable only for a static set up where the user requirements do not change frequently. In the dynamic approach, on the other hand, the authorized user set is defined when Web pages access requests appear. An interested user to the Web is authenticated by necessary information provided by the user. Once the information is verified, the user is either given conditional access, timed access, or full access only to the information relevant to the user.","PeriodicalId":411670,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 Kyoto International Conference on Digital Libraries: Research and Practice","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115192719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It deliberately focuses on what is being put in place right now in an effort to better support academic endeavour in particular using electronic materials. The examples are all drawn from the UK's largest academic datacentre, Manchester Computing, at the University of Manchester, which, in addition to supporting local needs, receives funding to host services for use by the UK academic community. These services include networking, visualisation, datasets and software provision. Many of the needs being met will be common to a wider community.","PeriodicalId":411670,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 Kyoto International Conference on Digital Libraries: Research and Practice","volume":"5 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116115208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intended to pave the way for a planned digital research library, HUMI is an inter-faculty initiative with several sub-projects. One of the HUMI's main tasks has been to establish a safe and effective method for the digitization of old, fragile books. Starting with the digitization of the Gutenberg Bibles at Keio in 1997 and at Cambridge University in 1998, the HUMI project has actively pursued cooperative ventures with research libraries and museums abroad. Following the collaborative digitisation of the Gutenberg Bibles in the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz in 1999 and in the British Library in March 2000, HUMI has promoted the inter-library exchange of digital images of historic books.","PeriodicalId":411670,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 Kyoto International Conference on Digital Libraries: Research and Practice","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114170913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem with cartographic generalization of spatial data is concerned with deriving spatial data with proper level of details when the data are used for an application. The generalization process is not simply a process of selecting objects or parts of objects suitable for an application; it should maintain the semantic information carried with the spatial data, such as topological relationships among objects and the overall \"look and feel\" of the data after generalization. Most difficulties of map generalization are because the importance of objects, which determines whether an object should be included and how it should be visualized in the generalized data set, is decided not only by their size, but also the \"meaning\" of these objects to the application. The latter is application-dependent, and often subjective. With more and more computerized applications making use of shared spatial data sources, and the increasing number of applications, efficient spatial data generalization becomes a critical issue. At the same time, it becomes less and less likely to have human intervention or have pre-materialized spatial data generalization for all applications in the Internet environment. The authors investigate issues for efficient spatial data generalization, with a unique focus on spatial database design and spatial operation processing. We propose several types of extensions and novel applications of z-values, a commonly used spatial indexing mechanism, to achieve our goals.","PeriodicalId":411670,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 Kyoto International Conference on Digital Libraries: Research and Practice","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124534630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While most of the pages consist of scanned images alone, some are accompanied by corresponding encoded text data. This report summarizes the principal parts of the procedures for producing image data. Demand for a well-designed interface grows as the amount of available digital data expands, as the Internet environment develops with easier access to digital contents and as high-quality images become more and more available. It is not accurately understood how the users utilize the image data from our digital library site. The concept of an image database was not thoroughly explored, to our regret, at the planning stage of construction for the Kyoto University Digital Library. A system update for the library is scheduled to happen in January 2002. The metadata elements that we are planning to adopt for our digital library system will also be included at that time.","PeriodicalId":411670,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 Kyoto International Conference on Digital Libraries: Research and Practice","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116321828","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A series of evaluation workshops designed to enhance research in Japanese and Asian language text retrieval, cross-lingual information retrieval, and related text processing techniques such as summarization, extraction, etc. Twenty-eight groups from six countries participated in the first workshop and forty-six groups from eight countries have registered for the second. An evaluation workshop usually provides a set of data usable for experiments and unified evaluation procedures for experimental results. Each participating group conducts research and experiments using the data with various approaches. The importance of reusable large-scale standard data collections in IR research has been widely recognized and an evaluation workshop is now recognized as a new style of active research project that facilitates research by providing the data and a forum for ideas and technology transfer. Finally, some thoughts on future directions are suggested.","PeriodicalId":411670,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 Kyoto International Conference on Digital Libraries: Research and Practice","volume":"316 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128533763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its dual view interface always returns the retrieved results in two views: a list of titles for document space and \"Topic Word Graph\" for word space. They are lightly coupled with their cross-reference relation, and inspire users for further interaction. DualNAVI supports two kinds of search facilities, document associative search and keyword associative search, both of them are similarity based search from given items as a query. The dual view provides a natural interface to invoke these two search functions. The associative calculation for measuring similarity among documents or words is the computational basis of the effective information access with DualNAVI. The two-stage approach in the associative search is the key to the efficiency of DualNAVI. It also facilitates content-based correlation among databases which are maintained independently and distributively.","PeriodicalId":411670,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 Kyoto International Conference on Digital Libraries: Research and Practice","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121255321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its speciality is its ability to handle the Japanese language. It uses the most powerful information search engine for the Japanese language so it provides a comfortable environment for the users who want or who must read Japanese information. Unlike the manually structured directory style of \"Yahoo!\", the computer-based robot-style search mechanism in \"goo\" automatically retrieves information from the net. Furthermore, \"goo\" provides the most up-to-date information through its original service \"mogitate goo\" which means \"freshly-squeezed goo\". Information categories such as the news site \"Nikkei goo\", also work perfectly to help the user find what he is looking for. We describe the key technologies behind the \"goo\" site and its services. The keys are the \"InfoBee\" information handling technologies, such as the information retriever, crawler, indexer and Japanese analyzer. The system described doesn't require a high performance super-computer. It works effectively on a workstation-cluster, even a whitebox-based personal computer cluster. It is economical, scalable, and offers the same performance as a super-computer.","PeriodicalId":411670,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2000 Kyoto International Conference on Digital Libraries: Research and Practice","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121282398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
