La dette de l’œuvre de Vénus Khoury-Gatha aux ténèbres est considérable. Cette dette s’enracine dans l’enfance libanaise de la poète de langue française, comme le suggère aussitôt l’admirable roman d’inspiration autobiographique Une maison au bord des larmes : « Plongées brutales dans les ténèbres, descentes quotidiennes en enfer »1. Cette dette est la nervure centrale tant de la prose (au premier plan Une maison au bord des larmes, livre fondateur daté de 1998, et La Maison aux orties, 20062) que de la poésie : en particulier dans Orties, première section de Quelle est la nuit parmi les nuits (2004), mais aussi dans Les Obscurcis (2008), Où vont les arbres ? (2011), et Le Livre des suppliques (2015). La réunion de « poèmes choisis », extraits de ces quatre livres de poésie, grâce à la publication des Mots étaient des loups3 (2016), permet de prendre la mesure de l’œuvre poétique. Impossible pour qui étudie ces livres, de séparer la prose de la poésie : elles sont l’envers et l’endroit d’un même acte créateur dont ce corpus central, volontairement restreint à quelques livres essentiels, permet de rendre compte exemplairement. L’expérience des ténèbres dans l’œuvre s’articule autour de deux pôles indissociables l’un de l’autre : le silence et le cri. La titrologie suggère déjà la primauté de ces deux centres axiaux : Au sud du silence4 et Les Ombres et leurs cris5. Pour approfondir la dette de l’œuvre aux ténèbres, il faut prendre acte de la logique pendulaire du silence et du cri qui est, de livres en livres, l’une des matrices de l’écriture.
