Without proper management the quality of service (QoS) of this type of application is unacceptable. This paper presents a context-aware resource management middleware for service oriented applications, which aims to handle the inherent dynamics of services and the network. A way to manage the services and resources of a device is presented. Based on measurable and manageable services, this middleware can cope with changes of the environment of an application and optimize its overall performance. User desired application-oriented QoS is specified by an Orchestrator, which orchestrates the collaboration of distributed services to accomplish an application. A resource management service is built to support making dynamic service coordination decisions for the Orchestrator. For this, the resource management service gathers statistics of the required services and their resource utilization over a cross-layer monitoring model. An important aspect for keeping the privacy of the services and controlling the access to resources, all devices and services are organized in virtual communities. Only authenticated users are capable to access services and resources. A free view point 3D video streaming application is chosen to prove the feasibility of the proposed middleware.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"513 1-2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114776656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is bidirectional in that it improves the utilization and provisioning of scarce wireless network resources toward the lower layers of the communication model. In direction of the higher layers, it performs adaptive source rate control of multimedia transmissions with different levels of granularity. The rate adaptation gracefully adjusts the user-perceived QoS to presently experienced link conditions. Thus, BiCyQLE takes on new and unique design challenges for the QoS traffic control which require leveraging of the interaction among individual QoS approaches across different layers in the communication model. The purpose of BiCyQLE is to increase the visual quality and the quality-cost ratio of multimedia transmissions.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132474807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This payload will be embarked on the Alphasat satellite for testing fixed broadband ground-satellite communication services. However, the interest in the further experimentation of aeronautical mobile satellite communication services has been recognized. Therefore, in this work the feasibility of an experiment for aeronautical-satellite broadband communications in Q-band is analyzed through the definition of a novel simulation method of an aeronautical satellite multipath channel. Simulation results regarding the performance of DVB-S2 communication links demonstrate the feasibility of the experiment for the provision of broadband communication services.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132739545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analytical values first for the throughput performance, and later for the energy consumption are derived as a function of the system parameters. The obtained results show that the proposed scheme outperforms IEEE 802.15.4 MAC in terms of maximum stable throughput and overall performance, including energy consumption. These benefits are obtained from eliminating backoff periods and collisions in data packet transmissions while minimizing the control overhead. Our proposal takes advantage of being independent of the number of transmitting sensors in the system providing stability for all traffic scenarios and showing that a reduction of energy consumption compared to IEEE 802.15.4 MAC is still possible.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132018291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite extensive deployments in recent years, the 802.11 based wireless mesh networks suffer from unfairness attributed to the lack of adequate support for multihop communications. Most existing solutions focus on hard fairness by investigating fairness without considering its effect on throughput and efficiency. In this paper, we propose a multi-objective optimization technique to achieve fairness and maximize network throughput through unused bandwidth reallocation. We have defined an inverse fairness index that minimizes the difference between the requested bandwidth and proportionally allocates extra bandwidth to each mesh router to balance fairness and throughput. The proposed method was compared with hard fair scheduling and without fair scheduling.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131755964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in order to satisfy a connection's service availability requirement in distributed controlled optical networks with no global information, we need a framework to provision a working path with the appropriate level of protection for each connection request based on the requested level of availability. Moreover, we need a mechanism to guarantee the availability requirements of the existing connections in the network. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed provisioning framework to provide differentiated protection services in optical mesh networks, where nodes in such networks are Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs). This framework examines the k most reliable paths as both candidate working paths and candidate shared protection paths at the same time, which gives the destination node the ability to apply an adaptive availability-guaranteed routing and wavelength assignment. Moreover, we propose two new distributed schemes to track the validity of the connections' availability requirements. Finally, we show the effectiveness of the proposed framework using extensive simulation experiments.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133504024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the emerging technologies for broadband wireless connectivity which has also been receiving growing attention is free-space optical (FSO) communication. FSO can provide high-speed, realiable and cost effective connectivity for heterogeneous wireless services provision in both urban and rural areas settings. In this paper we present the design concept and experimental evaluation of a proposed broadband wireless access system based on an advanced dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) radio-on-FSO (RoFSO) system capable of transmitting multiple RF signals. The RoFSO system combines the advantages of radio over fiber (RoF) technology and a next generation FSO system we developed earlier capable of providing stable and reliable data transmission at 10 Gbps. The initial results and analysis on the transmission performance of the system under actual operational conditions are presented. We show that RoFSO can be conveniently used a reliable alternative broadband wireless technology for complementing optical fiber networks in areas where the deployment of optical fiber is not feasible.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121314090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, knowledge of the exact time of arrival (TOA) information of the multi-path components of the vehicular wireless channel is required to achieve efficient channel estimation. Super-resolution algorithms which use embedded pilot information, such as ESPRIT and MUSIC have been used to estimate this information in the case of sparse multi-path channels. In this paper, we propose a new efficient algorithm based on the matrix pencil method which uses averaged covariance matrices and requires just a single eigen value finding routine to yield the TOA values.","PeriodicalId":410930,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE Globecom Workshops","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130425630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
