This article describes the musical heritage of the Kãaba according to their indigenous oral conceptions by highlighting the most pertinent traits of the music ‘classes’ within their related contexts. The long periods spent in fieldwork resulted in a strong bond developing between the researcher and this community, which led to cultural immersion and insight into their religious and social circumstances. Data were collected via observation, interviews and interactive experimentation with the custodians of this culture together with musical analysis. ‘Accredited’ representative groups within the community approved by the community validated analyses and conclusions. After presenting the research process implemented to define the Kãaba musical categories, idiosyncrasies are described to show that the notion of ‘repertoire’ proved ineffective in relation to Kãa music. The term’s relevance is consequently challenged, since it may well be just as unsuitable in describing other musical heritages. Instead, the term ‘categories’ and its derivative ‘categorisation’ are proposed to designate both the process and its outcome.","PeriodicalId":41064,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Musical Arts in Africa","volume":"22 1","pages":"59 - 91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77002374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By considering music education as a dynamic process whereby musical beliefs and practices change through time, this article draws on oral traditions, ‘verbal accounts of music-making [as] found in anthropological and historical documents’ (Agawu 1992:247). It explores the ways in which indigenous African music education systems in Nigeria have accommodated two exogenous systems, namely Islamic and Euro-American. It also briefly investigates Nigeria’s national policy on education, cultural policy and the national music curricula. Findings indicate a continued promotion of Western classical music ideals in music instruction, generating a series of very uncomfortable anomalies in relation to Nigerian contexts. This article finally calls for the development of a Nigerian music education system that is collaborative in nature and grounded in Nigerian needs and an understanding of Nigerian educational problems.","PeriodicalId":41064,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Musical Arts in Africa","volume":"97 1","pages":"1 - 18"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2018-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75201817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These two varieties are used as lingua francas in greater Johannesburg and thus reasonably have more ethno-linguistic vitality than other Southern Bantu languages spoken in South Africa. The musical genre of motswako defied tradition and effectively set an unprecedented trend in South Africa, firstly by mainly using Setswana and English code-switches and -mixes, and secondly by developing in Mahikeng. The aim of this article is to highlight this new trend, using qualitative content analysis to examine the lyrics of five popular motswako songs. The analysis illustrates that besides English, motswako mainly uses Setswana (both standard and non-standard varieties). The author proposes that motswako and motswakolistas are part of the identity of Batswana, and thus the growth and popularity of the genre inevitably promotes Setswana’s status in society.","PeriodicalId":41064,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Musical Arts in Africa","volume":"27 1","pages":"1 - 14"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85695113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A survey undertaken maps lesser and greater musico-cultural diversity amongst selected tertiary institutions that offer Music as a degree subject in South Africa and in Uganda. The results indicate that the term diversity is perhaps inadequate for Music and Arts education in Africa. An investigation of terminology that educators have used in recent publications presents an alternative category to diversity, namely creolisation. The author’s playing of a selected solo by Justinian Tamusuza, An African Festivity for Flute, engages with creolisation as a heard and experienced phenomenon. Listeners’ responses are documented as experiences of hearing creolisation instead of hearing diversity. From this exercise, some of the conclusions drawn are found to be applicable to Music and Arts education, so that the notion of ‘creol-ing’ as an analytical tool and as experience might well further an education that helps cultivate a ‘shared humanity.’ The article documents an inquiry into knowledge generation through sound, motivated by artistic research through music. Finally, this project indicates that a search for one or the other ‘category’ is perhaps less satisfactory than the quest for an experientially-sensed, embodied knowledge emanating from sound and music performance.","PeriodicalId":41064,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Musical Arts in Africa","volume":"37 1","pages":"69 - 86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84033074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"艺术学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
