The iterative detection algorithm assumes that the channel state is known at the receiver end. In this paper, the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is used as an alternative to pilot symbol aided channel estimation. It has previously been shown that weighted multistage PIC can be seen as a realisation of the steepest descent method for minimising the mean squared error (MSE). Following this interpretation, a unique set of weights, based on the eigenvalues of the correlation matrix, leads to the minimum achievable MSE for a short-code CDMA system. In this paper, we develop a method for finding a set of fixed weights, minimising the ensemble average of the MSE over all code-sets. Exact expressions of the ensemble averaged moments of the eigenvalues are derived. The use of TDMA requires a physical layer providing approximate infrared channel symmetry and extended access-signaling range to reach all potentially interfering stations. We describe the underlying physical layer for AIR and derive transceiver parity conditions for achieving channel symmetry. Differential modulation techniques are used in combination with OFDM to avoid any effort for channel estimation and equalization in the receiver. In this paper, the combination of differential modulation and convolutional channel coding is re-interpreted as a concatenated code in which the differential modulation scheme is the rate R=1 inner code and the convolutional code the outer code. Turbo decoding is applied in this case at the receiver resulting in a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain of more than 3.5 dB compared with classical soft decision Viterbi decoding.","PeriodicalId":409898,"journal":{"name":"2000 International Zurich Seminar on Broadband Communications.
