This study covers two points of discussion: speech acts in the teacher’s instructions and the students’ understanding to the instructions as speech acts. To describe two problems of this study, a qualitative descriptive research was applied in which the transcription of the conversation between the teacher and students can describe how the speech acts uttered by the teacher can be understood by the students. The results of this study indicated that explicit and implicit speech acts that were frequently uttered by the teacher in giving instructions in the learning process in which those instructions can be found in opening, core, and closing. Explicit and implicit speech acts can be categorized as directive form, namely command and/or request. Those utterances are used by the teacher to tell students to do something. Besides that, the students could understand the teacher's instructions in the classroom in various ways such as taking action, and giving statements, but there were some instructions that were not given a response by students.","PeriodicalId":408494,"journal":{"name":"JET ADI BUANA","volume":"03 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127341087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis focuses on the effort of finding the sexual identity. The struggles before and after coming out are represented in the novel, as well as the critical position of the author. Stuart Hall's representation theory was used as a qualitative approach to analysis. The data of this study were obtained from words, phrases and sentences related to the phenomenon of gay and trans-gender in the selected novels. People are still uncomfortable with the behavior of the LGBT group, so it causes violence against groups associated with them. When the protagonist admits to being gay, he is abused and discriminated against by others, like in the novel. By relating the problem in the story to the author's biography and the struggle to establish his own sexual identity, the topic of sexual identity seems crucial to address as a part of this social phenomenon. This research was conducted as an initial research on the LGBT group, which is expected to be useful for future research.","PeriodicalId":408494,"journal":{"name":"JET ADI BUANA","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125872812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study conducted based on the presumption that teachers merely consider students’ preference on how they want to be assessed. A need analysis is administered to meet the objective of the research. The result indicates that learners mostly prefer to have corrective feedback from the teacher during the teaching and learning activities, meanwhile performance task and quiz assessment are preferred by learners as their assessment strategies instead of summative assessment. Nevertheless in spite of that, KWL assessment strategy is also recommended for the teaching and learning of English.","PeriodicalId":408494,"journal":{"name":"JET ADI BUANA","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115549553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This descriptive qualitative study employed the classification of word formation processes proposed by Yule’s (2010)—derivation, compounding, conversion, borrowing, blending, acronym, backformation, coinage, clipping, and multiple processes to analyze the data. The data were taken from the descriptions of cosmetic products in the beauty brands by U.S celebrities—Fenty Beauty, Rare Beauty, Kylie Cosmetics, and Florence by Mills which were released and in production in April, 2022. This study discovered 125 word-formation processes including derivation (42), conversion (29), multiple processes (17), compounding (16), clipping (8), borrowing (7), acronym (3), coinage (2), and blending (1). This study implies that derivation is the most frequently used in the product descriptions, suggesting that the use of derivation creates adjectives that modifies the products.","PeriodicalId":408494,"journal":{"name":"JET ADI BUANA","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114258035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the purpose of this study was to find out how female and male characters are represented in listening dialogues from English textbooks in Cambodian secondary schools. The quantitative approach was used in this research study. Moreover, the researcher used descriptive statistical analysis as a tool to investigate the frequencies of women and men characters. The representations appeared in 11 randomly selected conversations in each chapter of the English textbook namely English for Cambodia Grade 7. This method is analyzed based on an adopted model developed by Tahriri & Moradpour (2014) which focuses on three dimensions of gender relation, subject position, and content categories. After analysis, the findings demonstrated that most of the conversations are male-female relations. Three subject positions are shown. Meanwhile, the gender characters countered in all dialogues showed slightly different between women and men. Regarding the content categories, six different categories are found. This study confirms gender bias in textbook that female characters are perceived and presented as being less than their male counterparts.","PeriodicalId":408494,"journal":{"name":"JET ADI BUANA","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125655352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
