Raumer","doi":"10.5169/SEALS-60208","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5169/SEALS-60208","url":null,"abstract":"In the southwestern part of the Aiguilles Rouges massif (pre-Alpine\u0000basement of the Helvetic realm, western Alps), a metavolcanic sequence,\u0000newly defined as the ``Greenstone Unit'',is exposed in two NS trending\u0000belts of several 100 metres in thickness. It consists of epidote\u0000amphibolites, partly epidote and/or calcic amphibole-bearing\u0000greenschists, and small amounts of alkali feldspar-bearing greenschists,\u0000which underwent low- to medium-grade metamorphism during Visean oblique\u0000collision. Metamorphic calcic amphiboles and epidotes show strong\u0000chemical zoning, whereas metamorphic plagioclase is exclusively albitic\u0000in composition (An 1-3). The SiO2 content of the subalkaline tholeiitic\u0000to calc-alkaline suite ranges continuously from 44 wt% to 73 wt%,but\u0000andesitic rocks predominate. The majority of samples have chemical\u0000compositions close to recent subduction-related lavas; some are even\u0000restricted to recent oceanic arcs (extremely low Ta and Nb contents,\u0000high La/Nb and Th/Ta ratios). But several basaltic to basalto-andesitic\u0000samples resemble continental tholeiites (low Th/Ta, La/Nb ratio). As it\u0000is very probable that both lava types are to some extent\u0000contemporaneous, it is proposed that the Greenstone Unit represents a\u0000former oceanic volcanic are which temporarily underwent extension during\u0000which emplacement of continental tholeiite-like rocks occurred. The\u0000cause of the extension remains ambiguous.
